Best. Uni. Ever.
The Santa Barbara uni they have right now is the best I've ever had. And the other fish is fresh and delicious as always... Something fun and new every time we've been there.
Love sitting at the bar and chatting with Chef Mitsunobu while we eat.
I have never eaten at a restaurant where our experience was so out of step with the restaurant's rating, and quality implied by their stratospheric prices. My wife and I just ate there tonight, and we both got the seven-course tasting menu. It started out well, and I thought the first three courses were almost in line with expectations. The black cod and the sashimi were excellent. But then things started going down hill. The prawn texture and taste were both very disappointing, the foie gras with custard and mushroom just didn't work very well together, and the beef soup was worse than I get at my company's cafeteria: strange-tasting broth, and tough beef, stringy in places. They also made us wait a spectacularly long time for the beef soup, and then again for the dessert; the whole meal ended up taking 2 hours, and we had to ask our babysitter to stay late. This was after I had told the restaurant four hours in advance (at reservation time) that we'd be ordering the tasting menu. There were no apologies, just "thank you for waiting" even though when the delay became apparent, we told them politely that we were in a hurry. And they never offered to make any corrections to the bill although we were clearly unhappy by the end. I've never seen a place that adds a mandatory 18% for a party of two; although they did remove that at my request (once it was clear that we'd never be returning), and we left a lesser tip.
This all would have been somewhat annoying and disappointing at a restaurant costing 1/3rd as much; but with a final bill of $320 before tip, it was jaw-dropping.
Had remembered amazing food here from a few years ago, but disappointed this time. For $125 price tag for the set meal (note the web site says $98!) every dish should be delicious and special. Every dish was a work of art to be sure, and some were unique and superb. But some dishes featured fish that was bland and boring. So not worth the price tag, sorry to say won't be heading here again.
We expected a fine dining experience at a leisurely pace. We had preordered the prix fixe menu thinking it would be presented much in the same way as other fine dining restaurants with descriptions about each course and care about placement of the dishes. It seemed like they didn't want to describe anything except, "Here is the fish; here is the unagi over the foie gras..." No description as to origin, preparation, special ingredients or anything that would make it seem that thought and care went into the concept or preparation. At $125 per person and an 18% mandatory service charge, you'd think it would have been better than just a nice Japanese restaurant. Speaking of the service charge... I don't mind when that is done but then there was a line for "tip" on the credit card slip and I had to ask if the service charge was actually the tip and they said it was. I know some people like the option of giving an additional tip but that's what it should say (& I've seen it at other restaurants). I think it's misleading to not indicate the tip line is in addition to the tip that is already calculated on the check.
Pacing was hurried and it was obvious everything was made well in advance . Placement of each course was willy nilly with the servers reaching over members of the party to place the courses down or clear plates as opposed to walking around the table which wouldn't have been difficult . I don't blame the servers . They just clearly weren't professionals or properly trained. You'd think that a restaurant that purports itself to be a fine dining experience wouldn't have disposable wooden chopsticks but they did. Overall the food itself was good but not great.
One of us had iced green tea and asked if she would be charged another $7 for a refill and was told yes which was shocking considering the cost of the entire meal. So as a matter of principal, she didn't have a 2nd glass.
Thoroughly disappointing and definitely not returning.
I was prepared to be blown away. I was prepared to pay top money to experience the wonder of flown-in cuisine and top quality.
It was not worth the money. The quality was good and the service was good, but nothing was excellent or mind blowing. I felt like I had over paid. Dinner in a strip mall, even flown in, isn't worth $200 for 9 pieces of sashimi and two Asahis.
Interesting spot, incredibly quiet,. I imagine the tasting menu for 135/person is the way to go (all at table must participate) -- but we went with the main menu. Sashimi and nigiri was incredibly overpriced, slices of fish were subpar. The wagyu (delicious) but at $15/piece probably not worth doing again. Entree we're good in size and flavor, delicious sauces and perfectly cooked fish.
I have been wanting to try this place but quite disappointed by the whole experience for a lunch costing $38 each person. There are far better restaurant in downtown Menlo Park for less than half the price with better ambience and service. There was really nothing especial about this place except for the name. The food could have made up for the shortcomings but although presentation was good taste was just average. Perhaps Dinner is better but don't want to find out for more money than what I paid for lunch.
After a long break, this was the second visit to this restaurant. Everything seems to have shrunk from the size of the food to the level of service. The only exception was costs that increased considerably. I had Organic Baby Spinach which was mushed and tasteless with some slivers of carrot. For a main course, the Alaskan Black Cod was reasonable in taste but cut into micro pieces and with little else to go with it. Fortunately I also ordered rice. My wife had tempura which was reasonable in taste but portion was small. The uni that was was offered was disguised in shiso leaves and so little that you could not say how fresh it was. Service was abominable, particularly given that there were only four other customers in the establishment. I had to remind the waiter to bring beer which I ordered first. On the peninsula, this must be the kind of place that you pay a lot for very little.
Not a good experience. The maguro tuna sushi was delicious but TINY piece. $7 PER PIECE. The cod was delicious, but my brother's steak came out AFTER we had finished our cod. The server even cleared one of our plates before he was served. His dish involved heating a sauce over a large leaf. The flame was not lit. Very disappointing. And zero recognition from waitress that the timing of our meal was terrible. The ambiance is bland - chipped tables, acoustic tiles in ceiling. Our bill for 4 people was $350. Ouch.
