Great find in the neighborhood. The sushi is fresh and the Ramen was great. It is a small place so I would recommend reservations especially if there are more than two.
I had ramen and pork slices, served in a rich bone broth. The dish includes a soft boiled egg, bean sprouts, spicy pickle, etc. The place was very busy and they lost our order. When we asked after about half an hour what was happening, they rushed it and gave us a bonus order of edamame.
We love this restaurant so much!
Mediocre food, lack of cleanliness in bathroom - naw we won’t be going back.
Gem of a restaurant. Ordered multiple dishes with sushi for a party of four and everything was exceptional. Portions were large. Casual setting, relaxed atmosphere, in a walkable neighborhood. Will be back when next in Berkeley.
Went here pre theater since my favorite Japanese restaurant doesn’t take reservations.
Green beans appetizer was tasty, as was hamachi negi maki and teriyaki salmon.
Disappointed in 2 “special” sushi’s.
Clam , and horse mackerel were just “ok.”
Surprised these were room temp, not cool.
Sushi rice fell apart easily when dipped in soy sauce (not ideal)
Large selection of “imported from Japan “ special sushi items. Waiter said he didn’t know anything about them to help me pick a couple.
Very nice place. Busy. Make a reservation. Great food. Nori chips are popular. Had rice bowl and udon noodle combo. Delicious.
Really fresh sushi and robata was nice combo to try a mix of dishes. It’s going to be my new East Bay goto place!
There were lots of choices on the menu, reasonable prices. Excellent service, well prepared fresh food. Nice ambiance for casual dining and conversing with friends.
The Ramen was spot on and the Nori chips are a must
Food is excellent, service is slow. Nori chips take forever to cook so should be ordered in advance.
Food was delicious and service was good! Very busy place! Definitely make reservations there’s not a lot of seating!
The tonkatsu I had was perhaps the best ever. Crispy and juicy. Happy hour runs until 7 on weeknights and I took advantage of that (on a Thursday) for a draft Asahi and a tofu appetizer. It seems you can park legally in the Safeway lot next door. Not fancy but the food is great.
Looking for sushi in the rockridge area. Triangulated on Mitami through Google, Yelp, and OT reviews. NIce place. Neighborhood ambience. Sat at the sushi bar, and was struck by the friendliness and expertise of the cutters. In addition to all the standards, they had a 8-10 fresh offerings. Started with melt in your mouth Hamachi, Toro, and Sake sashimi, but the most amazing presentations that night were salmon roe marinated in soy sauce and fresh uni. Doubled up on almost everything we ordered. Along the way we sampled barracuda and monkfish liver. All delicious. I've eaten great sushi in many major cities. The Mitami offering is world class. My partner and I both agreed we had to make a special trip back.
I had to take my Japanese friends to a lunch get-together on weekends and Mitama is the only place as long as I know open for lunch. I, including my friends, was a bit skeptical because of the convenience but we were all pleasantly surprised by the quality of their food. This place may look a little too simple to some, but they serve genuine Japanese food. Tempura is crisp as it should be and sushi melts on your tongue. I am so happy to know this place.
A great find! Nice neighborhood location with great dishes.
It was family dinner occasion for the four of us. As there was a Warriors game so the restaurant was not full on Saturday night. We ordered our usual combination dinners, with sashimi, salmon teriyaki, shrimp tempura etc. The rolls were very fresh and the starters of deep fried oysters and seaweed were of the normal high standard. The combination dinner is a hearty meal in a bento box and we can mix and match a variety of food choices. We just keep coming back. The only complaint will be the decor is a bit outdated and quite dark - walls need a facelift. Then the experience will be superb
This place doesn't look bad, the food and service its not graet, the table where the sat us at had a big mosquito in the wall that was the first thing i noticed. Food was ok.
Nice and unassuming, but really good food. I tried the Robata Grill, which I thought was superb, especially the Salmon.
Friendly neighborhood place. Delcious.
We live in the neighborhood and would love to have a good neighborhood sushi place within walking distance. We stopped going to Mitama several years ago because of the truly abysmal service. But because there's often a crowd there these days, we figured service MUST have improved. But we were wrong.
Oh so wrong. Despite having a reservation, it took more than 10 minutes to be seated. Fortunately, we were put in the much more attractive and quiet annex next to the main room. Our drinks and sushi order were taken relatively quickly, and the drinks arrived pronto. Unfortunately, the food didn't follow, the waitress didn't provide updates, and time ticked by. When we finally asked about our food, 45 minutes later, the waitress said it would be 10 more minutes. But almost instantly, our food appeared -- delivered to the wrong table. After we claimed our order, we found that the soft shell crab in the spider roll was stone cold. I can only guess that it had been sitting around somewhere for quite a while.
The couple next to us -- who had been there even longer than we were and were in the same situation -- asked where their food was and were told it would be a few more minutes. They got up to leave and amazingly, less than a minute later, their food arrived. In each case, the waitress mumbled an apology that it had taken so long. By that point, it's pretty hard to enjoy your meal.
If you really want sushi, try Man Puku in Elmwood -- it's noisy and rushed and crowded, but the sushi is great and they do take out. If you want a nice, not too fancy meal in Rockridge, go next door to Flavors of India. The food is great, service is good and they treat you with respect.
Mah...what can i say? I like Katana-ya in El Cerrito a lot better.
Service was very slow and they forgot to put my four year old sons order in so he sat there while everyone ate. They didn't bring his food until everyone was done eating. The bill was very confusing as they added tip without telling us or stating it anywhere on the bill. My chicken seemed undercooked but the service was so bad st this point, I didn't want to even bother.
Very good food! First time visit...ramen was delicious, nice "chewy" texture to the ramen noodles, delicious broth with lots of goodies in the bowl. Had the tonkatsu ramen. Perfect for a cold night. Also tried the rock and roll sushi...was very fresh. Will definitely go there again to try other items on the menu!! Not many tables, so get there early!
Below average Japanese. I would rather eat sushi from Whole Foods than to spend a dime here.
Never received my points. Disappointed. I view that as a service issue.
This was the first time that my husband and I tried Mitama for a date night. We thought that the service was very friendly and fairly quick with bringing over your orders. As Japanese food lovers we thought that the food had many wonderful dishes and choices! Looking forward to going back again!
Great Sushi Bar experience all the way around. Casual environment, fresh sushi and lots of good sake.
Delicious bento box! Next time we'll try sushi too which looked fantastic
One of our favorite restaurants!!! Great food and staff are wonderful.
Wonderful restaurant, friendly staff and amazing sushi!
Mitama's sushi and sashimi is always good, particularly since they fly some of their selections in from Tokyo's Tsukiji market.
Chicken karaage is also a favorite. Everything is great!
The restaurant is very basic, not romantic or chic, but the food is great. We were 4 adults who had small plates. The beef wrapped asparagus was out favorite. Chicken kara age was crispy on the outside and succulent inside. Sashimi was very fresh. Fried calamari and scallops were also good. Not cheap but reasonable ($20 pp without wine) but we only ordered off the appetizer menu.
Service was very slow. Our server was pleasant when she did finally come to the table. We had to repeatedly ask for extra ginger - which we asked for from the beginning. We asked for a California roll with tobiko and it was the smallest amount of tobiko that we have ever been served in the 3 decades of ordering the exact same thing--maybe a dozen eggs only.
I only come here for the ramen, though my friends have had the sashimi which was fresh and well-presented. The ramen is flavourful without being heavy, and the portions leave you satisfied. Located in a lovely, walkable neighbourhood!
This was my first time at this restaurant! Got seated, took our order! Got our appetizers in a timely manner but the entree came very late. We ordered two bowls of Tonkotsu ramen! The table next to us arrived the same time and they left 45 minutes before our party! Their tonkotsu ramen has to be the most awful I've ever tasted, very bland! Wont be coming back to this dive!
This is an average restaurant. Nothing special. The beef that came with the dinner special was very fatty. Nothing special on the prices.
Overall very good food well presented and delicious we have come back several times and try different dishes and each time found everything very well presented and very good we enjoyed the atmosphere it's cozy and comfortable look forward to the next time
The sake menu was good - we had good options and enjoyed what our waitress recommended. We tried the ramen this time. Good, not great. Better option is the robata, which was very nice.
Sushi here is spectacular. Service was friendly and fast. Small place, but good.
