Mistral at Loews Coronado Bay Resort Ratings and Reviews
We were at the Loews hotel for a meeting and so the first night it was easy to go to Mistral. THe host greeted us and we had a lovely conversation with him as he seated us by a window.
The menu is short but the food is very good. I had scallops with bok choy and mushrooms with dabs of possibly sweet potato on the plate. Succulent and delicious. My husband had the duck which he said was "fine" (finicky duck person ! ) We did not have dessert . I had a lovely glass of Lyric by Etude Pinot - smooth and fruity. A very enjoyable evening. Our second night we decided to return as we did not want to drive into Coronado . Continued our conversation with
our host who greeted us like old friends this time. We both had Wag yu tri tip which was served
with green beans and found it tender and tasty. I had a glass of Orfila Benign Neglect Syrah which was a good choice with the beef. This is a local vineyard I had not heard of. Tonight we had dessert. Raspberry cheesecake for me with raspberry sorbet, my husband had his usual vanilla icecream. Cheesecake was light and creamy and just the perfect size portion after all the meat. Two good dinners. Would return if ever in the hotel again.
Plan was to go to this restaurant while staying at the Loew's Resort for New Year's Eve celebration. Big mistake. Made reservation for 6 and called twice to confirm. Show up at restaurant and the woman at the front says the reservation is for 6 - at the bar. Strike One. She agrees that doesn't make sense and gets us a table - for 10 - immediately next to the musician. Table is not even set. Strike Two. We say no, they bring us to another table for six, but there are only 5 chairs. Staff does nothing, so we pull our sixth chair to the table. Strike Three. Waiter finally shows up and hands us a "menu" which is a fixed menu of nothing but vegetarian selections. The website for the restaurant said NOTHING about a fixed menu and we had planned to order off the menu. Strike Four. We are then given the "regular" "fixed" menu with 2 entrees to choose from, both wholly unimpressive. Oh, and everyone at the table had to get either the 3 course or 5 course, no exceptions. What a joke. Strike Five and we walked out. Will never go there again.
Has Christmas evening "fixed dinner". Within an hour of arriving back to our hotel, we were both sick. It was either the salad or the soup.
Our main waiter did a pretty good job of checking on other tables around us, and for the most part ignoring us. The rest of the serving staff was very good.
I resent having a mandatory 18% gratuity added to the check when one of the servers deserved a lot less, and getting sick later didn't help me feel better about the 18%.
We are at the restaurant since we were staying at the hotel for our 35th Anniversary. The service was very slow. Waiter never came back to check our drinks or ask how the food was. They were quite busy tho with a couple of larger groups. A different person brought out our meals. I ordered Wagyu steak, most expensive item on the dinner menu. The steak was served already cut into eight tiny square pieces on a skimpy amount (about 3 teaspoons) of watery mashed potatoes. It was more like a gravy than a side dish. For $45.00 I expected a better presentation with better portions, especially the mash potatoes.
I was also surprised with the lack of seafood items on the menu. Being that the restaurant is located on the waterfront in San Diego.
I would not recommend this place to a friend.
Great view of Coronado, San Diego Bay, the sunset, and San Diego City skyline. We dined on a Sunday at 5:00 pm and had the restaurant to ourselves. They really provided great service and the food was outstanding. A lit bit pricey but that is to be expected for this type of up-scale restaurant in a resort and with the great view. Worthy of that special night out.
Food and service were excellent. Fantastic view of the bay outside of the Loews hotel in Coronado.
Guinea Fowl: very tasty. White meat was much better than the dark meat.
Grilled Salmon: Cooked perfectly, to my husband's "doneness" specifications. Green sauce complemented it perfectly.
Salads were perfectly dressed, everything was very fresh, portions were just right.
"Cherry" tart: very tasty. But actually it is a flaky almond tart with a couple of cherries thrown in.
Only complaint: Watch where you sit. We had to move our table because the setting sun got in my eyes.
Coffee: very good.
It's been ~20 years since the last time I visited the restaurant with my fiancee (now wife). This time we are visiting with our 2 kids and tried to impress them with the bay/ocean view but didn't, particularly since there were no updates to their decor. Food was still good. A great family restaurant but not a fancy meal.
My wife and I stayed the week at Loews Coronado Resort to celebrate our 3rd anniversary together along with our 18 month old boy. We did the usual Yelping and was happy to find that Mistrals, which was on-site at the hotel, was well received by most of their patrons. We booked a reservation via OpenTable. Upon arrival, from the warm greeting at the front podium to our waiter and other staff, the service was outstanding. The Chilean Sea Bass was divine. Every detail on the plate was perfection. My wife ordered the Grilled NY Steak (medium-well). Unfortunately, the steak came out thoroughly "well-done" and had a bit of a powdery/tough consistency which was disappointing. However, my wife, not being the most picky eater, was so hungry she ended up eating most of it. The rest of the dish was good but the steak dampened the mood a few notches. To mitigate the immediate issue, I shared the Sea Bass with her and she was quite impressed with it as well.
I can't say enough about how much I admired the service Mistrals provided. I'm fairly certain had we brought our concerns about the steak to our waiter they would have addressed it appropriately. As our little one was getting sleepy towards the end of the evening, our waiter was kind enough to pack a Milk Chocolate Bombe dessert for us in recognition of our special occasion. That was really kind of him and of Mistrals to do. The dessert was delicious btw! Thank you so much!
The service was slow and our waiter disappeared after getting our initial drinks and rarely checked on us. We ran out of drinks multiple times and had to get other staff to help us. The food took a very long time to arrive and was luke warm went it did arrive.
I was told about this place from a friend. He said that the view would be amazing and the food would be out of this world. He was 100% right. It was the perfect mothers day dinner. The food was a taste bud explosion and to be honest, the price was better then I expected.
Took my fiance to Mistral after proposing (and she said yes!). The view of San Diego harbor, including the Coronado Bridge, is magnificent. Every dish we ordered was delicious. For appetizers the mussles were very tasty, with a broth that was worth sopping up with fresh bread. The raw oyster appetizer special was good, but the oysters were small for the price. The Chilean sea bass entree was excellent - the fish was cooked perfectly, seasoned lightly so we could taste the fish and browned with a light, crispy crust. Delish! I ordered the seafood risotto which was very tasty - just a little cheesy - and the seafood was cooked just right. I can't recall the wine we ordered - a Merlot and a red blend, but both were good choices. After dinner we sat on the Loews Coronado Resort deck looking out at the harbor. Very romantic. I highly recommend Mistral for special occasions.
For exciting views, excellent service, elegant atmosphere, and very good food, this is a true find in an out-of-the way location. We were there on a rather quiet evening and really enjoyed the peaceful and glamorous atmosphere. There were ample food choices so we could have what we wanted and enjoy several courses of nicely prepared and tasty food. We'll go back.
We took my husband's mother out for her birthday and the menu so limited that she ended up with something she didn't like. There was nothing on the menu that wasn't "unusual" with strange ingredients. We had eaten here the year before and loved it. The place just wasn't very festive or good for the price we paid.
Valentine's Day at the Mistral had a selective menu of approximately 3 options for all courses. The strawberry, pop rocks shooter to start was fun, then very good rolls and butter followed by the pork rib appetizer which melted in our mouths, sirloin was awesome, no fat, cooked to perfection, my wife had medium and me medium well, both perfect. The sirloin sat on a bed of mashed potatoes which were mixed with numerous items including chunks of lobster and corn, they were delicious. The roasted carrots were a little firm and tasted great. I forgot the name but the dessert was like a moose cheese cake with a hard chocolate curly design on top. Great way to finish the dinner. Even the ice tea was great, special blend individually bottled. We were treated nicely and had three different people service the table from time to time. They did not bother us, they stayed on top of refilling the drinks, never made us feel rushed and we found it hard to leave being so relaxed and comfortable. Meal may have been a little pricey but it was Valentine's day and everything was very good, did not feel bad about the price. This is our second time here, the first time we had the regular menu and we both had the duck, again, everything was awesome. Overall, nice restaurant, nice view, great food and superb service.
Great location, ambiance and service. The food did not live up to our expectations given the restaurant and price. I'd give the food a 7 on a scale of 10. It was very convenient for a romantic evening when combined with a gondola ride through the Cays at the Gondola Company. You can either board on the other side of the Cays or pay extra to board right at the resort.
Food was delicious. Absolutely would recommend the scallops and sea bass. Drinks from the bar were strong, exactly how we like our drinks to be. View of the Bay during sunset was beautiful.
Didn't like that they were using their Valentine's Day pre-fixed menu the day before Valentine's day, wanted to see what their full menu had to offer. Did not like that there were no prices listed anywhere on the pre-fixed menu (not sure if this is typical). Our waiter was nice, but had no personality. Really felt like he was just an order taker.
Would go back just cause you go to a restaurant mainly for the food and the food here is good. Can't beat the view.
Good food, lovely room and surroundings, and a great staff. We get over here as often as we can. It is a bit out of the way, the hotel is a convention spot and you shall need a car. But, only a short drive from Coronado down the Strand and well worth the trip, especially given the quality for the dollar. Looking forward to our return.
This was our first visit and the ambiance was beautiful. However, the appetizers and salad prior to the main course were very poor quality. The Caesar salad was nothing more than cut up iceberg lettuce with a dressing unfit for any salad. The spaghetti squash soup with stringy and highly seasoned with black pepper overpowering what could have been a much better tasting experience. Once we got to the main course however the Chilean sea bass was exceptionally good, mouth watering, and melted in your mouth. The filet mignon was one of the best we've ever tasted. We did not try dessert so no comments about that. The service was extraordinary and the view beautiful. Don't recommend any of the pre dinner courses we had.
This restaurant was the epitome of excellent service. We were there for our wedding anniversary and they went out of their way to make it a special evening. The host, Richard, and each of the wait staff were excellent. One of the best experiences we've had in regards to service.
