About Mission Street Oyster Bar & Seafood Restaurant

After nearly two decades of cooking at local institution Anchor Oyster Bar in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood, veteran seafood chef Freddy Gamez left his post as head chef to open his very own restaurant: Mission Street Oyster Bar. Situated in the vibrant Mission district, the inviting restaurant serves several varieties of oysters and generous portions of the freshest fare from the sea. Classic dishes include cioppino, Dungeness crab cakes, caesar salad, prawn pastas and creamy Boston clam chowder. Local fish specials and oyster offerings change daily to ensure premium freshness and quality. Choose from a comprehensive selection of beer and wine for the perfect accompaniment to your favorite seafood dish.

Everything was really good, except the server was taking really long with the bill, our Uber was waiting outside for five minutes. I had to stand up and ask for the bill twice.

No host to greet us. Many guests waited a long time after us to be greeted. Insufficient wait staff personnel, compounded by their poor service skills. The wait personnel were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. There were only 3 of us for dinner. I finished my dinner before our 3rd guest was served his entree!!! Inexcusable. They forgot his appetizer: a simple oyster shooter. Although the waiters were apologetic; they were completely forgetful. My entree came out in 25 minutes; the 2nd entree came out 15 minutes later; the third entree came out another 25 minutes later! This really happened!!!! The cooks were in such a hurry that they OVERSALTED all the entrees. If it hadn't taken so long for our food, we would have sent it back. What happened here???

I truly enjoy every visit to Mission Street Oyster Bar; their are several oysters options and they are fresh and shucked well. I generally come for the local Dungeness, which on my latest visit was huge and roared up all buttery and garlicky. The space is loud and a bit cold, but the service is friendly and attentive and that makes up gif it.

My hopes were high for this restaurant given that the owner was the chef at Anchor Oyster Bar. The crab and oysters were great, but the service was terrible and the place was not very clean. It was also very expensive, and small things like bread were not included. If I'm going to drop $150, I'd sure like free bread. Too bad, as there is a lot of potential for this restaurant.

Fabulous raw selection. My trout was a little overdone - my guests meal was a thicker fillet and he thought it was better. The vegetables accompanying the dinner were excellent. In all - I'd return for the raw bar.

Sooooo disappointing!!!!

The oysters were good, the garlic bread was good.

The clam chowder tasted like Campbells. The crab cakes were overdone and didn't have enough crab. The house made tartar sauce - not pleasant.

The cioppino. For the love of god do not get it if you respect seafood. Absolutely tasteless. The clams and mussels were not cleaned well - read:gritty - AND they were over cooked, as were the prawns. The broth was so bland. It broke my heart, despite the twelve sprigs of thyme in our serving.

Totally overpriced. Would not recommend except for oysters.

My teen and I were seeing a play in the area. We arrived early and of course were eager to dine in the Mission. I found this place on OpenTable. It was nearby so we made the reservation and walked over. It was an excellent decision. The two staffers were fun and energetic, the oysters and other seafood was wonderful and that garlic bread? WOWWWWW!!!! They were not lying about that! The seafood was fresh and well-cooked. The veggies were under-seasoned but it's the seafood we came for, and the seafood we will return for. It was such a wonderful meal that we couldn't finish it all and were ready for a nap at showtime!! Great experience and I will be heading back with friends very soon!

Great find in the Mission!

I was looking for a spot in the Mission to take my daughter to after a show at the Victoria theater. This one came up in Open Door and we gave it a try. Everything from the Crab/Avocado salad through the seared Ahi tuna was great. Special thanks to attentive server Mel who saw to it that I got both sauces for the Ahi. I preferred the avocado one, but that's just me!

This place is good for oysters and oysters only .Great fresh oysters -$1,50 each at the Happy hour before 6 pm. We had dozen of the oysters, 2 cups of clam chowder soup, mussels cooked in white wine and rainbow trout with veggies. Well, to tell you the truth the only good thing was the oysters. Everything else was very much mediocre quality with a high price tag. Mussels were absolutely dry and not tasty . Fish was overcooked & absolutelly dry . If they want to charge $25.00 for the fish it must be at least little bit better type of cooking and presentation.Otherwise it felt much more like cheap kind of street cooking . Be prepared to pay for a few slices of bread-$2,50 . Not worth the cost .

The Cioppino was delicious. Atmosphere was nothing fancy, pretty casual. Service was okay, nothing outstanding. Made a reservation but clearly didn't need one since they didn't even ask if we had one. When I tried to tell them we might as well have been talking to a wall.

Was looking for a nice seafood restaurant close to home, and since the Mission St Oyster bar accepted reservations(unlike Anchor)we chose to try it for an anniversary. What a sweet discovery. The laid back vibe, somewhat shields the overall exceptional food preparation and service.
Having read the reviews, we decided on the cioppino, and a shrimp skewer entree-the clam chowder will have to wait for a return visit. The cioppino is a huge serving, and even so, I was so impressed with the variety of seafood(clams, crab, shrimp, sea bass, calamari)and an amazingly flavorful sauce(thin, yet rich), all balanced by the great garlic bread that accompanies.
The selection of oysters was a nice start, and the wine list varied, yet paired nicely with the menu.
Overall, in an area full of dining options, the Mission St Oyster Bar is a standout, and will garner many returns.

Man, this place is great. I've eaten here 3 times recently. Really good spot for late-ish dinner before a show at the Chapel. Favorites include the crab stuffed avocado, steamers, tastiest ciabatta ever... dunked in steamers broth... And of course the bivalves. Old school love in the Mission.

The food was awful. The service worse. Mostly I think they were understaffed for service but that is about one of the worst meals we ever ate - both of us - and we were shocked as the reviews are all good. Also, there's no check-in point. We had a reservation but no host stand or even person at the door to ask us for help. That should have been a clue.

Delightful surprise. Arrived at noon when the doors opened. Surprise! It's Happy Hour!
Had a flight of oysters all from Washington. Fresh, briny, delicious! Ordered the shrimp skewers with roasted vegetables. Friend ordered pasta with prawns. The prawns tasted fresh, the roasted vegetables just right. We ate. Drank draft beers that were cold and satisfying.
Will return soon. A new haunt!

This is the second time I have been to this place. I come to San Francisco about 4 times a year and I ate here 6 months ago and it was fabulous. I had an Ahi Tuna steak served rare and besides being a great value, it was perfect. This time I had the same and it was again, perfect. The oysters are pretty great too. This is in the older part of the Mission that seems to be disappearing in SF, but for a taste of what was in an extremely casual atmosphere, this is the place to go. FYI, they serve beer and wine only.

Fresh seafood. The raw oysters were very good and the cioppino was delicious. We missed the happy hour but they offer oysters at a discount for happy hour. They also had specials for dinner and offered wine and beer. The staff was very friendly and service was very fast. We enjoyed our dinner and will definitely return.
