Mrs. K's Toll House Ratings and Reviews
Even on a cool, cloudy day, Mrs. K's is cosy. Today the food was OK, but I've had much better here. And you know how a tiny gesture of a server can make your visit so enjoyable? Well, we couldn't decide on a wine so we ordered two glasses and the server offered to split it for us - two half-glasses each. And they were BOTH good. This restaurant isn't in my neighborhood, but it's worth the trip.
I had lunch with 3 girlfriends. We were getting together to celebrate Christmas and one of my friends had retired. The decorations were lovely and festive. The food was very good and service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and patient; allowing us to take our time ordering and staying a while after finishing. Very nice place! I highly recommend it.
Had lovely time at Mrs. Kay's. Only negative was service and one food item. I ordered the duck cassoulet, and the duck was almost raw. I am used to raw tuna, and rare foods in general...but raw duck? It was hard to cut and chew. I wanted to send it back, but our server did not come back till others were well into their meal. Once the duck was more done, it was delicious.
Everyone else in our party of four were happy with their meals.
Did I say that it was also a while before the server asked if we wanted any drinks? Slow service was the only negative.
We love the wine bar downstairs at Mrs K's. It's our favorite for special occasions, last minute outing with friends and date night w/ my husband and me. We live nearby so can walk and have taken full advantage of our neighborhood gem! We never eat upstairs. But the jury's still out on the recent addition of live music. The downstairs space is very intimate, which is precisely why we love it so much, but the performer we've experienced tends to be pretty loud and raucous, which really detracts from the ambiance and makes conversation very difficult. Suggest the music wait until after 9 and extend the hours to attract a crowd more interested in that vibe for drinks, late night dining.
New Year's Eve
The salad arrived before our drinks and we had to ask the waiter to bring bread. The main course arrived too soon. The timing and coordination were all wrong! The food was very disappointing as well. I ordered the salmon--it was flavorless, overcooked and arrived to the table warm. My husband ordered the steak and although it was cooked to his liking, it was a tough and fatty piece of meat (not al all what you would expect from a $37 entrée). We have given the restaurant a few opportunities to redeem themselves after our last bad meal there; but we will not return until they fire the chef and hire some capable wait staff.
Dining room upstairs is beautifully decorated for holidays. Cozy winebar downstairs, although we were disappointed that there was a very loud blues band that night and we had to move upstairs to visit with our friends. Were planning on ordering from bar menu in wine bar, but ended up ordering from dinner menu upstairs. Food fine, but not inspired. Staff friendly but not so informed (hostess was not aware when I called ahead and when she initially sat us downstairs that band was scheduled for that evening).
Meal was fine but the service felt like a hustle. The waiter informed us because there only are 4 glasses of wine in a bottle, the five of us should get two bottles. This is incorrect since a proper wine pour is 5 oz and a bottle contains 25.4, we each would have received a glass with a proper pour. The waiter tried to upsell each of us by encouraging additions to the dishes we ordered. He should have mentioned that the crab my wife agreed to include with her risotto would cost $16. This is not an insignificant add-on. Lastly, he brought out a third bottle of water even though the glasses were not empty. The bottle was left mostly full, but we got another $6 added on the bill. These aspects of service detracted greatly from my enjoyment. Since I usually select the location for our holiday celebration meal, I expect to be dining elsewhere in 2018.
I was not impressed. The food and atmosphere was just not very good. Not sure when or if I’m be back. The food was mostly cold and very poorly seasoned. The Eggs Benedict barely had any Hollandaise Sauce. The line to get food was incredibly long. The room with buffet is small and cramped. With everything in one room and the line only on one side then you must wait a long time to get your food. Also, the building and furniture and utensils really needs to updating. It’s like eating in a nursing home. I understand the building is historical but that still doesn’t mean there can’t be some refreshing. Paint and nice furniture can do wonders. My husband I used to love this place. Dry disappointed.
Went to celebrate holiday season. Family meal with mother in law, sisters in law, husband and myself.
Several instances with less then ideal experience:
cold things (calamari, potatoes) that should have arrived hot.
three!! Spears of asparagus and unsalted unbuttered cold to lukewarm potatoes plus decent but not great steak for $38?
Sister in law had to ask for rolls and butter -for our table - and napkin and silverware for her.
Other sister in law had to ask for Just a spoon with her coffee.
Husband loved chicken wings but sandwich instead of whole mushroom cap was chopped mushrooms in arugula- maybe 1/3 a cap? Cheap and unattractive presentation to boot
music too loud (initially provided seat on main level in deafening large scale party proximity- Inc live music with amplified instruments- in spite of “open table” notes asking for quiet table away from loud music and/or tv. After indication to hostess table was unacceptable we got placed in downstairs pub with live piano - still a bit loud esp during pianist break when speaker next to my head played - had to ask them to please turn this down a bit. I’m not a curmudgeon I have a hearing disability and made this reservation with accompanying “quiet table” notes several days prior to avoid all these issues. Restaurant did not seem to see or care about notes.
I have been a fan of Mrs. K's for nearly 20 years, bringing out of town friends and relatives there many times over the years. I must say, though, I was disappointed during my recent visit for a special lunch with a good friend who was in town. It has been a while since I'd visited and I was looking forward to showing my friend one of my favorite places in the DC area. From the awkward way we were seated (the hostess was not available); I had to beg for the table I requested during the reservation, to the people trying to enter the room from an outside door that was unlocked and slammed into my guest where she was seated. To our waiter who actually greeted us by saying "I'm going to get right to this . . .these are our specials . . .I have a large party in the other room so you should probably order now to get ahead of them." And finally to the bus boy who actually slammed plates down on nearby tables he was setting. The one bright spot was that the food was good, and the holiday decorations were lovely.
Ambiance is great, waitstaff friendly and competent. BUT Mrs. K's always and still struggles with an appealing menu and tasty food. I go there because it's about halfway between where one of my best friends lives and I live. We are both retired, so don't see each other at work anymore.
In what has become an annual rite of the Christmas season, my wife, brother and I got together to catch up before the much larger family gathering next week. Unfortunately, there were multiple other groups of a larger size present that made normal conversation close to impossible. The food was of good quality, but the service was only okay. Still, it was good to return to the place that my mother loved so much.
I had a reservation at 12:30 for a business lunch. Upon my arrival, I was informed that as soon as they had menus available we would be seated. At 12:40, when we had not been seated, I asked the hostess for a status. She informed us again about the menu issue. We were finally seated at about 12:45, which is a problem for those of us who have limited time. We had a small table in the front part of the restaurant and my chair was right next to a door. While I was sitting there, someone tried to come in through that door. To my surprise, the door was unlocked, so the door opened abruptly into my chair. I then manually locked the door so it wouldn't happen again. The food was ok, but I did find the whole experience a little disappointing.
The first table they tried to seat us was literally beside the fireplace; they had no problem when we asked for another. The waitress was pleasant, however, drinks took quite a long time to be delivered. Our three meals were superb. After eating, when I was served coffee (she served & left) - it was black and I was unable to ask for cream until at least five minutes later. At the end of the meal I tried to pour more water into my glass from the bottle, but it was empty. The waitress was looking right at me, but instead of offering to get more, she turned and walked the other direction.
From the greeting by two caring hostess, Sheneka and her assistant, the beginning of my visit to Mrs . K's was outstanding ! My two servers of my visit , Damon and Tyron were awesome ! I sat in the main second dinning room for Sunday brunch and was awaited for immediately by Damon. He made sure our dirty plates were removed in a timely fashion before we got our next plate. Our drink were always automatically refilled at the perfect timing due to Damon , our server, and Jose Louis. The ambiance is perfect for Christmas time ands bring a very warm feeling. Guest and myself completed our buffet adventure when we had a few drinks at the bar with Tyron. Amazing bartender and mixologist! Overall I enjoyed my visit to Mrs.K's , and I will tell friends about the location! My only minor issue was the general manager , Kathy , following me and my guest from checking in to our seating.. The difference is , she wasn't as attentive to other tables compared to the one I was sitting at, from a manager perspective. To each its own
