Mrs. K's Toll House Ratings and Reviews
Service was excellent and very efficient. Food presentation was very nice. Waiters were very efficient and pleasant. Manager was curt and unfriendly at every step I took. Bathroom was clean but commode was needing replacement seat desperately. Overall dining was very nice.
Crab soup, duck breast, crab cakes and chocolate flourless cake were all excellent. Bread pudding was okay but nothing special. Ambiance was quiet, intimate and romantic. We were in a small dining room. There are other larger rooms that might have a different feeling. The service was attentive without being intrusive- excellent. Expensive especially if you have multiple alcoholic drinks.
Getting seated took longer than it should have because the hostess was bussing and setting tables. The crab sandwich was dry, not tasty, and the crab patty was tiny—but at least it was expensive at $23 for a lunchtime sandwich! The tomato soup was tasty but served as a tiny portion in a bowl with a huge rim to make you think you were getting more than you were. We were disappointed with this restaurant, which seems to have gone downhill in the last 10 years.
Had lunch there yesterday. I had the special which was trout served with whipped potatoes and green beans, friend had the salmon with a vegetable medley. The food was very good, very enjoyable. Loved the sauce on the trout. What was really top notch was the service, thank you Matt! He was attentive but let us chat without interruption as long as we wanted. He had that great balance of being there when we needed him but not intrusive. All in all a lovely afternoon, Mrs. K's never disappoints.
All employees were extremely helpful, cheerful, and courteous. This was my first experience at Mrs. K's Tollhouse. I took my sisters there for dinner on a Saturday night everything was nice, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends, and I shall be back there very soon. Thanks again!
Even on a cool, cloudy day, Mrs. K's is cosy. Today the food was OK, but I've had much better here. And you know how a tiny gesture of a server can make your visit so enjoyable? Well, we couldn't decide on a wine so we ordered two glasses and the server offered to split it for us - two half-glasses each. And they were BOTH good. This restaurant isn't in my neighborhood, but it's worth the trip.
I had lunch with 3 girlfriends. We were getting together to celebrate Christmas and one of my friends had retired. The decorations were lovely and festive. The food was very good and service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and patient; allowing us to take our time ordering and staying a while after finishing. Very nice place! I highly recommend it.
Had lovely time at Mrs. Kay's. Only negative was service and one food item. I ordered the duck cassoulet, and the duck was almost raw. I am used to raw tuna, and rare foods in general...but raw duck? It was hard to cut and chew. I wanted to send it back, but our server did not come back till others were well into their meal. Once the duck was more done, it was delicious.
Everyone else in our party of four were happy with their meals.
Did I say that it was also a while before the server asked if we wanted any drinks? Slow service was the only negative.
We love the wine bar downstairs at Mrs K's. It's our favorite for special occasions, last minute outing with friends and date night w/ my husband and me. We live nearby so can walk and have taken full advantage of our neighborhood gem! We never eat upstairs. But the jury's still out on the recent addition of live music. The downstairs space is very intimate, which is precisely why we love it so much, but the performer we've experienced tends to be pretty loud and raucous, which really detracts from the ambiance and makes conversation very difficult. Suggest the music wait until after 9 and extend the hours to attract a crowd more interested in that vibe for drinks, late night dining.
New Year's Eve
The salad arrived before our drinks and we had to ask the waiter to bring bread. The main course arrived too soon. The timing and coordination were all wrong! The food was very disappointing as well. I ordered the salmon--it was flavorless, overcooked and arrived to the table warm. My husband ordered the steak and although it was cooked to his liking, it was a tough and fatty piece of meat (not al all what you would expect from a $37 entrée). We have given the restaurant a few opportunities to redeem themselves after our last bad meal there; but we will not return until they fire the chef and hire some capable wait staff.
Dining room upstairs is beautifully decorated for holidays. Cozy winebar downstairs, although we were disappointed that there was a very loud blues band that night and we had to move upstairs to visit with our friends. Were planning on ordering from bar menu in wine bar, but ended up ordering from dinner menu upstairs. Food fine, but not inspired. Staff friendly but not so informed (hostess was not aware when I called ahead and when she initially sat us downstairs that band was scheduled for that evening).
Meal was fine but the service felt like a hustle. The waiter informed us because there only are 4 glasses of wine in a bottle, the five of us should get two bottles. This is incorrect since a proper wine pour is 5 oz and a bottle contains 25.4, we each would have received a glass with a proper pour. The waiter tried to upsell each of us by encouraging additions to the dishes we ordered. He should have mentioned that the crab my wife agreed to include with her risotto would cost $16. This is not an insignificant add-on. Lastly, he brought out a third bottle of water even though the glasses were not empty. The bottle was left mostly full, but we got another $6 added on the bill. These aspects of service detracted greatly from my enjoyment. Since I usually select the location for our holiday celebration meal, I expect to be dining elsewhere in 2018.
