Mrs. K's Toll House

I would recommend Mrs. K's Toll House to a friend. The food was well prepared and the staff pleasant and knowledgeable. The setting was in a circa 1930 building and required navigation of some steps. Next time we go will be in the late spring so we can admire the gardens.
I went there for my 50th birthday today for brunch with a friend. I’ve passed this place many times over the years, and it is much bigger on the inside than I thought. The wait staff was excellent and attentive, and so was the food. My friend and I chose to sit at a table by the window, which happened to be near a large group of tables that was going to be used for a baby shower. The volume in that room was a little high, but that was our choice to sit in a room to be used for a large gathering (the greeter warned us ahead of time before we chose that table). We were still able to talk with each other and have a wonderful time. I will definitely be going back there again and again and again.
It was cold in the place.
The food was good but one plate came out of the kitchen stone cold and the other boiling hot. The refire of the cold plate took an inordinate amount of time with no explanation.
Service was grudgingly provided, but with a smile.
Nothing like what I've come to expect from this restaurant.
What started out to be a wonderful birthday party for a past coworker turned into quite a disappointment. First off we were seated in the basement. It was our hope initially to be seated upstairs in a space that we had remembered many years ago. The food was overly salty. but the worst part came when one of our co-workers found a hair in her food. We brought it to the attention of the wait staff. Nothing was done. We were told that because the color of the hair was lighter than anyone that worked in the kitchen they were not going to be responsible. One of the women who was in attendance happened to have the same hair color as the hair that was found in the food. Needless to say it was embarrassing for the person who had nothing to do with the hair. Except no one in our party or anyone we know will ever go back.
The music was good but too loud for conversation.
It was our Anniversary Weekend and this place was referred for brunch. Price was reasonable and service was great. Food was good just did not find the variety better than other brunch spots we have experienced.
Service was very slow for them not to be full..we were the last ones to leave after 10p, with a 8p reservation. The best service was receiving water.
The restaurant was very crowded last night. Service was quite slow. It took a long time to get our meal. When it came, mine was cold. Our waiter was friendly but he disappeared for a long time so we felt abandoned. We like Mrs. K’s and hope that this was just a one-time problem caused by a staff and kitchen that were over matched by the crowd.
Honestly, I’m appalled and wouldn’t recommend this historic treasure. The staff/ karaoke bar ruined the entire experience. I was excited to have my
Parents meet my boyfriend’s parents for the first time. We were seated at a nice table in the wine cellar. Things were going fine until the singer/piano,/ Karaoke party started. Mind you, this was a 7pm Saturday night dinner reservation. There was no mention of a bar party, karaoke scene or obnoxious ( loud and terrible) live music. Yet, we were sat directly next to it all. I couldn’t hear the person across from me for almost the entire dinner. The service was slow and the singers never took a break. Finally at 10 pm when we were offered dessert and coffee, the music stopped. Peace and quiet had finally commenced. Oh, I was wrong. Five minutes later, the bar staff turned on some loud ghetto music and blasted it. I asked two different servers to turn the music down to no avail. Then as though to kick us out, the bar staff turned every light in the downstairs on and started turning down tables and being loud. We finished our coffee and went to leave. As my disabled father was leaving, a staff member barged through the back door and slammed the door into my dad. There was no apology or acknowledgement of my dad or I... and she stormed near the hostess area and started yelling for the other staff members. The entire experience was poor, disappointing and left a miserable impression on us. Come on, Mrs. K’s what is wrong with you...?
The food was excellent however the service extremely slows. Perhaps they should hire more servers. Additionally, the waitress was confused about how to handle the check. I would eat their again but I think they need to do something about the slow service.
This was our first visit to Mrs. K's Toll House, and we were somewhat disappointed. First, the good points: the venue is very nice, a classically appointed old house with nice antiques. If I were inclined in that direction, I'd call it romantic. I'd give the venue about an 8 or 9 out of 10. The food was good. A starter of mussels was outstanding. The main course of lamb chops was delicious, if a little small. A dessert of bread pudding was very nice. Wonderful homemade bread. Nice touches like sweet whipped butter. Overall, about a 7 out of 10 for the food, and I'd give the mussels a 9 out of 10. The negative was in the service and in the beverages. We arrived to find the restaurant about half full. Although the staff did not look busy, it took a while for us to be seated, a while to get our menus, and a while to receive the restaurant week menu, which we had to ask for. Service was slow, and the waiter had to return to verify one of our orders. Last but not least, my mojito was watery. Not merely watered down, but actually tasting more like water than like anything else, and I would bet that there was not more than a tablespoonful of rum in the glass. Service: 5 out of 10. Beverages: 2 out of 10.
Food was great, service staff seemed a little distracted and out of sorts, but very nice a polite. On New Years Eve, service was much better.
We got to the restaurant a little early but they were accommodating and let us sit before our reservation. The server was very nice as were the staff serving at the buffet. The waffles were out of this world! Highly recommend this place for brunch
We have been going to Mrs. K's a couple of times a year for about 19 years. It's a verynice place, although when they are not busy they tend to seat people in the wine bar downstairs, which is a bit noisy. However, the staff were very accommodating and put us at a more private table, which was quiet at first until a large party was seated near us. They weren't obnoxious, but it put a dent in the mood.
The drinks are always good there, and the wine selection is well curated. You pretty much can't go wrong if you know what kind of wine you like. My Pinot Noir is a new favorite. They could improve on their beer selection, but wine is their thing, so I went with that. There are at least three good brewpubs about a mile away if you want interesting beer.
As for the food, we got some yummy bread that was still warm, and then started with the mussels appetizer, which I recommend - they're very flavorful and there are a lot of them - enough for two. I really liked my short ribs - they were very tender and seasoned perfectly. However, my wife was less than keen on her seafood pasta, which was very labor intensive (more mussels, and shells on the shrimp), she doesn't care for whole calamari ( I ate those), and the the broth was ok but not great.
No complaints about the service - cheerful and prompt the whole time.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve had some lovely meals here, but for the past two years or so, I’ve had some special occasions ruined by the disappointing food and service. The temperature in the cellar dining area seems constantly cold. Food portions are not substantial and the salmon I recently ordered was overcooked. We recently were sat in a large room during the Saturday brunch where a holiday luncheon was occurring, and the seating was cramped and the ambiance unbearably noisy. Our server twice gave us an incorrect order for a relatively simple sausage omelet. Alas, I will probably not be returning.
Love the decor. The waiter was wonderful and the food was delicious. The parking was inadequate. Even though the dress code is business casual the majority of the patrons were under dressed. It was very noisy as the tables filled with loud patrons.
New Years Eve celebration was a disappointment! Have not eaten here in years. Food was awful. Will not go back
Wonderful table in the wine cellar area. Great meal on NYE!!
Initially we were seated near the bar. They were very accommodating when we asked to be moved. My lamb was overcooked and tough, the husband's steak was undercooked. The mashed potatoes had no flavor. The bread pudding had no flavor and I had to ask for the ice cream that was supposed to come with it. The red velvet cheesecake was the size of an oreo cookie. Overall not a satisfying dinner.
My husband and I were pleasantly surprised with the buffet selection though a few items weren't prepared or available.
The waiters were very attentive and friendly.
Overall, it was a great experience and we would love to return.
Wonderful experience with my family along with such great food!
Food was overall pretty good. Rib eye was tough and fatty. Service was occasionally spotty, e.g., delay in some drinks, some desserts (came at different times). A nice experience at Christmas.
Food needs to be improved tastes like cardboard . We spent 150 dollars and the only thing memorable was the beer
The ambience and attention was great. However, there are very limited choices for people with allergies or other dietary restrictions.
A memorable lunch for my family. Everyone had an excellent meal and the staff were very accommodating
Highly recommend for any special occasion
Service is as mediocre and food did not meet the expectations associated with the price point. Sides were lacking pizazz.
Beautiful setting for a holiday dinner.
Fantastic service and food. Would definitely recommend for special occasions.
12:30 reservations. Seated around 12:45. Front desk attendant was not welcoming. Had apps delivered close to 1:30. Finished lunch around 2:40. Not because we were slow eaters.
I always enjoy Mrs. K's. It is a bit of a throw-back in terms of décor and manner, which helps to make the place so special. Yet the menu is very today and quite delicious. Great ingredients and creative menu. I particularly enjoy their range of appetizers - the veggie potstickers, tuna tartare tacos and deviled eggs are always a hit if you are entertaining a group. We had a table of 12 for a holiday dinner and it worked perfectly - and all enjoyed the food and experience.
The food was outstanding. The service was poor. They seated us, including one of us in a walker, in a corner, where we were later trapped by other tables’ chairs, and where we were as far as possible from the only walker -accessible bathroom. We were informed quite a while after ordering that 40% of the entrées at the table were unavailable. Then, after waiting a long time to be served, they served part of the table, leaving the rest to watch as the first wave’s dinners got cold. The seating was also very tight, such that patrons and servers continuously had to squeeze by behind some of our chairs, making the whole experience very uncomfortable. We just wanted to get out of there by the end. Perhaps the wait staff was new, but proper restaurant management at a restaurant of that caliber should have made up for that deficiency. I can’t say that we will return again.
The tables are way too close together. I took my 93 year old mother there for lunch. I had to ask two people to stand up and scoot their chairs in so we could get out. I think they need to not try to seat so many people at once. The food is ok. Our coffee came cold the first time, so we had to ask (when we got someone’s attention) for hot coffee.
Staff is helpful and friendly. Good buffet food, lots of choices. Beware: they automatically added a gratuity even though we only had a table of 4
Excellent service! Great Happy Hour!
Had to go back. It was the 30th anniversary of me proposing to my wife at this restaurant. Surprised that a restaurant was still there so many years later and that the quality had been maintained. Highly recommended.
Loved the historic ambiance—exposed brick and cozy rooms on multiple floors. One of a diminishing number of restaurants that decorate for the holidays. Was there for Saturday brunch, which included appetizers, a main course, dessert and beverage for $30. Our group chose shrimp everything was delicious, and I had enough to take home. Our server was attentive and answered all our questions and requests for dietary preferences. Would definitely recommend.
Very nicely decorated for Christmas. Food was just OK. Grilled cheese sandwich was under par, salad was better. Service was good, friendly staff.
Great experience! I’ve lived up the road from this place for 5 yrs and it’s the first time I came in. Wish I had come in sooner!
Nice setting. Good food. A little chilly in the main dining room even with the fire going.
