The food was so great! At first I thought it was pricy when looking at the menu, but the food is so good and the flavor combinations are well worth it. Very good for a date night - we sat outside and people watched as well. They are adamant about not using soy sauce on certain dishes, which I liked. They take their food and sushi seriously!

I booked for our anniversary dinner because I somehow had the impression via reputation that Mirai was a fabulous place with really great food. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The specialty rolls were very good (we had 4 of them), but the combination sashimi offering was nothing special. Seafood udon was good. I was expecting the slices to be of higher quality and was hoping the pieces might be a little bigger. Our server was very pleasant, but the overall service experience wasn't great. The hostess was very friendly but must have forgotten to check us in as she came over to our table after we were seated to ask for our name again. I think they forgot about our appetizer as we had to inquire about it, and it ended up coming out toward the end of our meal. When our table was wiped down after our plates were cleared, only half of the table was wiped - so half was "clean" and dry, the other half was not. We were considering ordering desert, but were given the bill without being asked if we wanted desert. The restaurant had a number of empty tables by then, so I don't think they were trying to turn the table. Overall, probably fine for your everyday neighborhood sushi night out or carryout, but I personally would not book again for a special occasion. I am pretty sure I mentioned it was our anniversary in the reservation note, but guess it didn't matter. Too bad. Without drinks, our bill was $250 for 4 people.

Trying to hard to be interesting but missing the mark. Expensive for what you get -- the menu wasn't broad enough to feel like it was worth not having more of the basics.

We were in town from NYC for a conference. It was my first visit to Bucktown— cute neighborhood. The hostess greeted us warmly. The room downstairs seemed clean and minimal, and she astutely suggested that we dine upstairs in the livelier sake lounge. It was definitely more hi and darker. I liked that we looked down on the charming street from the table by the window. Service was very friendly. The food was good and innovative. I would have given a perfect score of the quality of the fish were a bit higher (firmer, cooler pieces). Mind you, I'm a toughen
critic because my favorites are Shuko ( the best), 15 East, Jewel Bakl, Morimoto, Sushi of Gari (omakase sushi bar upstairs and in Tribeca only!), Kuramazushi omakase, and the like. Those are in in a different price point altogether, so Mirai was very good for the price. We would definitely return. Try the tuna with mango salad appetizer. All the rolls were excellent, too. The Mizu No Shirabe is a personal favorite sake for the price point which I don't see often, so try that as well. It's very refreshing.

Had dinner here on a Saturday at 7pm with my husband. The weather was nice so we chose to be seated outside. Pleasantly, there was no wait time. Our waiter and the rest of the staff were attentive and prompt. We shared a bit of everything - the shishito tempura, spicy chicken lettuce wraps, tuna tartar, shrimp tempura roll and shrimp togarashi. Everything was great and came out in a perfectly timed fashion. Since we chose to dine out in the front patio area during the prime of Saturday evening, the noise level was a bit high from the street - motorcycles, scooters etc, but the people-watching was great. Seeing all the people walking with their pups was a nice little perk for me.

This was the second visit to this locale, the first time we went with a Japanese friend. The menu at this place is more extensive than the other restaurant in the heart of down town Chicago which we have visited once. The food quality is comparable. Since this was our second visit and we did not go with our Japanese friend we noticed that the hand rolls were not prepared the same way (shape). The explanation did not seem correct. Other than that we are already looking for an excuse to return.

This is some of the best sushi in Chicago. Everything I had was fantastic, but the sweet miso nabe, was one of the best soups that I've ever tasted. This is great sushi for sushi lovers who want to appreciate the rice and fish, but they also have maki for people who may be newer to the sushi scene.

I come from fresh fish land in Seattle, and though I'm from Chicago and love all things about the city I was skeptical about getting great sushi in a mostly landlocked town. It's true that they don't have the variety of fish that you can find at a sushi restaurant in Seattle, But I was knocked off my feet by the flavors at Mirai - the tuna tartare was especially incredible, by the far the best sushi dish I have ever had. The texture was almost blended but still with a bite, and with a delicious sauce and a tiny perfect quail egg, chive fronds and fish roe at the tips. The whole thing looked almost too good to eat but of course it was even better eaten, slowly, and really savored. This place is top-notch and will impress even the pickiest of sushi lovers.

We went with the chefs recommendations which were average at best. All of us left hungry and with a bill over $100 despite asking to be told when we got to $75. Two of our group also did not want to do the omakase chefs special but got lumped in with us because of the waiters mistake. They still charged everyone for us. Our waiter did not seem to understand us at all, which was frustrating. None of us would return.

I highly recommend Mirai Sushi to everyone. I have eaten Sushi at several restaurants and none of them come close to the freshness of Mirai. The owner is very hospitable and makes you feel like family. I will tell everyone I know to go to Mirai.

We love Mirai and keep going back. The food is consistently delicious, the sake list is solid - and the cocktails are great. I could eat the Mirai Combination every day. Dig the neighborhood vibe, and the service is super friendly. My out-of-town family loves it. If you are with older folks with hearing or mobility issues, request downstairs seating.

The night we met, a little more than 11 years ago, we ended up at Mirai for late night sushi. Went back a few times since and the late was for Valentine's Day. The sushi was as good as ever and the scene was still lively and energetic without being overwhelming. The service was a tad slow and I'm not sure why since the tables were never completely full. I think management may have thought it was going to be a regular Sunday night but it was Valentine's Day before a national holiday on Monday! Should've known you were going to get a crowd. Anyway, the wait staff did an admirable job holding it together and keeping all the plates in the air. No question we'll be back. With or without the personal nostalgia, Mirai is still a great place of sushi!

The place is not very casual. When there with my SO and there was a lot of noise from groups. The upstairs was closed so the space was also cramped. Food was good and fresh, not special. I would return but not a lot of love.

Mirai has the best sushi you could possibly have. I'm fond of saying that it will ruin you for inferior sushi, and it's totally true. Once you try their perfectly prepared tuna, you look at grocery store sushi, with its texture of an old washcloth, and wonder what you were doing. Their spicy tuna ESPECIALLY is worth a visit all on its own; they use spicy sesame oil instead of spicy mayo (like nearly every other sushi place out there), and it makes such a huge difference. The tuna becomes spicy with a velvety texture, not oily from mayo, and it blends so much better with tons of other add-ons. Try a spicy tuna hand roll with kaiware (a peppery microgreen) and avocado, and don't overlook the difference getting fresh, hand-grated wasabi makes.

Mirai doesnt go crazy with big flamboyant rolls, although i do like those. just good flavors.
sitting outdoors on a warm night could be fun, but the upstairs is dark and romantic.

a knowledgable waiter gave good directions on saki, but could use more by-the-glass options.

not cheap, but no good sushi usually is..... give 'em a try.

I will return!

I came to Mirai with my boyfriend on a beautiful summer night. We had been craving sushi for a while and wanted to enjoy the mild weather by dining al fresco. I suggested Mirai, which is just a few blocks from my apartment. We started the night with their gyoza ravioli and a bottle of sake (Drunken Whale). The gyoza wasn't my favorite - the texture was slightly slimy and sauce was nothing special. But the sake was excellent! They poured it into a fancy decanter to keep it cold and the server was nice enough to keep our glasses full the whole night. We ordered a couple of main dishes and rolls and they came out as they were ready. First was the chicken togarashi with a seven spice sauce. This one was really special. The sauce was unlike anything I've tasted in a Japanese restaurant or otherwise - had a really nice kick to it and we loved it so much the server gave us a container of it to take home (they sell it for $6-10 if you want to buy it separately, it's that popular.) Next up was the salmon teriyaki with tempura sweet potato. The fish was cooked perfectly and sat in a bath of teriyaki sauce - seriously delicious. I hate it when restaurants don't give you enough sauce and here that was NOT an issue. Plenty of yummy teriyaki to dip into. The seaweed on our maki rolls was top quality and they make their own soy sauce, so the experience was totally worth it. Great new find for us! I highly recommend.
