Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
Take the 1 train to Christopher St/Sheridan Square and walk south (toward Grove St) on West 4th, 4 blocks. Continue south on 6th Ave 2 blocks to Minetta Lane, and 2 blocks east to MacDougal St.

What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
Nothing special. I had the burger which is considered one of the best dish in their menu and wasn’t that good... it wasn’t easy to digest. Lots of fries and little quality. I had way better burgers in my life and they were definitely cheaper than the minetta burger.
when I explained I had modified my reservation over the phone to accommodate 3 instead of 2 to the matre'd, he gave me this incredulous look and told me to go get a drink at the bar, waving me to the bar. The words 'please' and 'thank you' are non existent in his vocab. When we are finally shown to our seats, no one gives us menus for 10 mins and when the waiter shows up , he asks us if we have any questions. And we said we need to see the menu, he responds 'how did this happen' without apologizing for the wait he put us through. The only reason this review gets a 3 star is the bone marrow, which was luxurious and perfectly cooked and prepped. The Black label burger is overrated. I think shake shack was better and the service at shake shack is far superior.
Very nice ambiance even though very crowded and noisy for a brunch experience. Good drinks. Bone marrow stood to its reputation, baked oysters were very good but a bit salty. Disappointment was in the steak frites: fries were over cooked and did not have the distinctive taste of frites but of regular French fries. Steak was average. Ask for mustard and you will get the real deal (French and oh so strong) which will make up so greatly for the dish itself.
Food was sublime albeit pricey. But oh so worth it. Service was awesome. Close quarters
Thanks for a great lunch. The bartender where so welcoming. As well as the Maitte de
Protein portions were about right for lunch. My steak was cooked perfectly, but the steak at the table next to me was over cooked and sent back. The French fries on the steak and frites were a little over the top. Service was on the slow side yet always friendly. The atmosphere is definitely clubby which feels right for a restaurant that is mostly a steak house. I would have no hesitation in going back; however, I do not have an overwhelming urge to make the Minetta Tavern a regular stop.
My son’s 19th birthday
Celebrating my daughter’s 18th bday!!!! Such a great place & so fun!!!
Not good for kids
This was the restaurant I had been waiting to find ever since I moved to Manhattan. The ambience is just right. It was completely bustling, even on a Sunday night. However, unlike all other reservations I have made through open table, they sat us twenty minutes late, and barely apologized. But my prince Edward mussels were sublime.
The waitress was very helpful! I look forward to my next visit.
Truly enjoyed the experience.
Lovely food and staff friendly. My medium lamb came up almost raw but apart from from that delicious. Love the no tipping policy - such a relief in New York!
First time at Minetta Tavern. We loved it! I had the black label burger. It was fantastic. My wife had the French Dip and my daughter had the Minetta burger. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Service was great. We will return.
We went for the Black Label Burger. Had reservations for 2 pm on a Saturday, I recommend making a reservation unless you live within walking distance. The place is awesome, right out of a Coppola movie, the perfect setting for this burger. Our waitress was wonderful! And the Burger, an A+.
Minetta Tavern is a gem, and next time I’m trying a steak!
Love this restaurant! The service and food is first rate. Duck confit salad is probably best I have ever eaten. But I have to say one odd thing that I was surprised about. They didn’t have Bloody Marys! I was told that they only serve them for weekend brunch. I was there for lunch on Black Friday. The server, who was very polite and professional, explained that they only make the mix on the weekends. Understood, but I would have been happy with plain tomato juice, Tito’s, plus all the usual regular ingredients. So if the GM is reading these reviews, it’s just a friendly suggestion to offer Bloody Marys at lunch time!
Always a favorite. Work in perfectly to activities Downtown and on the Lower East Side
The best burger in NYC!!!!
Excellent food and wonderful experience. Would return and recommend.
Reception is very pleasant and accommodating. Felt the waiter was rushing us but certainly attentive. Very busy place. Had an excellent Bloody Mary from the bar. Steak frites was outstanding. Steak made exactly as as ordered! I have been there before, I will go again. Always make a reservation. The tables are very close together so not necessarily a quiet romantic day/night out but fun overall!
Cost, interesting, local, fun!
Best service ever
With my wife’s Doctorate Graduation!
Perfect, as always. Despite being slammed the kitchen and servers deliver fabulous fare and a memorable experience each and every time. Special thanks to server Rebecca for being a GREAT ambassador of Minetta Tavern! Two Michelin Stars next year!!
Minetta Tavern is one of my favorites. Super professional and friendly staff that know exactly how to make you feel welcome and special. Food is good, but not necessarily the reason to come here. They've got an excellent wine list thought. I think Minetta Tavern is all about the place, the history and the people. A place to get a taste of how New York used to be.
Loved my waiter, Tony. This was the best version of salmon Benedict I have ever had, the latkes were much better than the bland English muffin and the dill in the hollandaise was perfect. Happy, happy girl!
We came with very high expectations for the best burgers in town.
It is not. It was ok and thats it .
First of all it took 45 minutes to the burgers to arrive.
We ordered medium and it arrived totally rear so we had to return it for another few minutes .
We also ordered Borata , it is disgrace calling this dish a Borata.
We received a tiny slice of cheese. Together with some veggies and balsamic.
Borata should be a ball of cheese otherwise don’t call it borata.
Together with over pricing and just an ok food our overall experience is not that good.
2 burgers =64$
1 glass of wine = 20$
Borata = 20
Side dish of spinach =11$
112$ for this lunch .
The Black Label Burger is by far the best burger I have ever had!
Food OK, nothing outstanding, particularly not the very limited vegetarian dishes. The burger seems to be the 'must' option. The service is awful; reservations come one after the other so you feel hugely pressured to eat and pay in order to sit the next customers. The noise level is high. It is very difficult to get a table without advanced reservations. I wouldn't return, not recommended.
Just a great experience.
Loved the place, food, service everything about it.
A MUST to visit i New York
I'll be back. :) :)
The burger Black ... did not meet my expectation
We never miss Minetta when we’re in NY. It has an old school NYC vibe that we love and steak frites that we crave when we’re away. Love Minetta
Disappointed, more hype then substance
The bone marrow is an absolute must. We both got the aged burger, which was excellent. Though be aware however you order your meat, they go slightly under. I ordered my burger rare and it came about bleeding. Not what I expected but still delicious. Cocktails with seasonal ingredients are also worth trying.
Good food, Cote de boeff was cold Even though I think would’ve been excellent. We had left over and asked for it to go back which they never delivered to us!
I am not much of a burger person however this was by far the best burger I’ve ever had. My husband who’s a big foodie agreed. Highly recommend for a casual meal.
The ambience of Minetta Tavern was the best part of the meal. It was warm and cozy when we arrived and the decor was fitting for a french bistro. Our waitress was attentive to us and was timely but she did not hover. She allowed us to enjoy our meal and we stayed there for around 2 hours just chatting. The food was what we all expected, french comfort food. I would recommend the house burger and the french fries.
Great place great food. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable.
Food was amazing. Service was efficient but not overly hospitable. Still had a great time and would come back. Steaks were some of the best.
Six of us came yesterday to celebrate a friend's birthday at brunch. We were seated at what was clearly a 4 top but squeezed in and made it work. From there it was kind of downhill. Service was terrible. It took forever to get anything. We ordered and decided to get some bacon to start. He suggested we get 3 orders for 6 people. It was way too much and didn't arrive until the rest of our food had. We didn't even eat half. We had ordered some drinks and after twenty minutes inquired where they were. Clearly they'd been forgotten. When they arrived the waiter spilled the bottle of coke all over my fiancé. He was super apologetic and the manager offered to cover sry cleaning. The bill arrives and not a single thing was comped- not even the coke. We didn't expect to get our meal for free but that was a major customer service fail. We were all excited to come but won't be returning.
Brunch was delicious!
