Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
Black Label Burger was impeccable. So juicy. Got it with cheddar cheese and side salad instead of fries. Bloody Mary was also incredible.
The food and service were both outstanding. Classy little place to take you back. Ask for Aaron if he’s tending bar!
Bone Marrow was delicious, however the black label burger was a let down. Flavorless and overpowered by the sautéed onions.
Great service, even better meal. Staff was very attentive but not intrusive.
Amazing food and great ambience! Go for the black label burger. You will not be disappointed!
Minetta Tavern is a favorite place of mine where I meet friends or even dine alone. The food is always delicious. The Minetta burger is hard to beat. The service, although rushed at times is professional and accommodating. These guys work hard! So sometimes patience is needed. Reservations a must.
Was disappointed. The black label burger was not as great as I thought it would be.
Wonderful place. A must, I recommend the Minetta burger
The chips aren’t like always... maybe the fry oil was old?
Black label burger seemed unseasoned and I also couldn’t really taste the aged beef at all.
My first time finally here! Amazing, professional yet comfortable service. Loved loved our waitress. Can’t wait to go back. Also my first time finally having a chocolate soufflé!
Had a fantastic meal of pate, bone marrow, and black label burgers with a very knowledgable server to help with our wine pairings. The galette dessert was cold and difficult to cut into. Our server gave us the check without us asking for it- it made us feel rushed, and there was not a reservation after ours.
The atmosphere is cozy and lively. We were in a cute little round booth in the back and I literally could have rested my arm on the shoulder of the gentleman at the next table. I was fine with that intimate atmosphere but not everyone might be. The menu is fairly limited, which is fine but, it is wise to look at the choices ahead of time to make sure your tastes/preferences can be accommodated. The bone marrow appetizer was especially delicious! Our server was very pleasant and attentive!
The burgers are absolutely amazing
I usually LOVE Minetta. One time bad experience I’m sure. Service was awful. Grossly undercooked burger. Waiter refused to check in at our table. Had to walk the burger back until another waiter saw....instead of a new one, they re-heated the old one. I came for the burger...
Great! Second time there and won’t be my last.
A very nice Burger but not as nice as it used to be. I travel to NY every year and I always considered the black Burger the best NY Burger but not this time
We arrived 50 minutes before our reservation but, after a short wait, they found a table to seat us despite it being very crowded with a Saturday brunch crowd. Service was very efficient and friendly. Food was delicious. We've been coming here intermittently over 40 years and have never been disappointed.
Delicious food, impeccable service, old school New York done right
Like being transported into a different era. The heritage chicken was incredible, the black label burger decent. Service was awesome and the entire experience amazing. Overly priced though.
I don't know, I had the famed black label burger at $30 and was underwhelmed. It was a nice big piece of meat and was incredibly soft, but lacked flavor. My wife's omelet she also said was good but not memorable. That's all fine, but the fact that it's impossible to get a reservation here and it's quite expensive left me disappointed relative to my high expectations. I'm not sure what the fuss is about where you can't get a seat weeks in advance even on a weeknight. It's ok but not all that.
I’ve dined at Minetta Tavern many times before and this was by far the worst. Our waiter barely spoke to us, didn’t check in or say a thing besides taking our order. My husband had to wait 15 minutes for his cocktail. Besides that, my $33 burger was ordered medium rare and delivered medium well, which is a BIG no no. Safe to say I won’t be returning any time soon. I’m extremely disappointed.
The Black Label Burger was worth the hype. I would get it again.
Great burger!!! Classic NYC historic restaurant
Burger was outstanding but service was way off. Meal beat the bar service.
Without question, the best burger in NYC. Its the real deal, not hype!
Excellent choices every day, but always the burger and steak fritte available and worth the price of admission.
Un sitio maravilloso y una comida increíble!!! Volveremos seguro!
Accommodating staff. Nowhere to wait and table turnover a bit slow . Hamburgers tasty and undercooked. Way undercooked! A place to visit once for tourists. Not for foodies. Menu boring.
My wife and I came for her Birthday on Sunday the 17th. LOVE the food , STAFF IS FANTASTIC. we have eaten at Minetta Tavern many times and will continue to come back again and again! Thank You
They have gone downhill. The server barely came over and the food was very greasy.
Great food and service in an old school NY setting. Highly recommended.
They were half an hour late to seat us. Very unapologetic and lots of attitude. Reluctantly comped one round of drinks after we had to ask. Great old school NYC vibes, but can’t say that the food and ambience together overcome the lack of service. Even the infamous black label burger is really not that impressive for what it is. Spend your money on a nice meal somewhere they actually care about customer service.
I have been to many steakhouses across America and a few in NYC and thus far with the history of the establishment/ambiance coupled with the service and of course the amazing food, this is the place to be. There is a lot of competition in NYC and frankly what sets them apart is service. This establishment makes you feel like it is fine dining but also like you are just at a neighborhood restaurant, a part of the community. We decided to get a last minute res for lunch to celebrate our engagement. The service from the minute we walked in was just impeccable. Not naming any names but I had just been to the steakhouse in Brooklyn and frankly if you can eat at Minetta do yourself the favor and choose Minetta. My grandmother always talks about the old Minetta Tavern and while it isn't the same food I am just as excited that I finally got to go check out and feel old NYC like I have never felt before. Kudos to McNally for keeping it true to the original building, it is very much appreciated! As for what we ate: clearly the escargot, côte de boeuf and potato anna. To top it off: coconut layer cake which was airy and just amazing way to end our celebratory lunch! This isn't the only McNally owned restaurant we have been to but I do prefer it.
Amazing service, excellent wine suggestions, well-prepared food, and very timely all around. A great experience for our Valentine’s Day, and very grateful for it.
They did a wonderful job, as usual. Will return.
Great ambiance, great burger, great steak frites, great wine list. A classic and a favorite in NYC
