Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
Take the 1 train to Christopher St/Sheridan Square and walk south (toward Grove St) on West 4th, 4 blocks. Continue south on 6th Ave 2 blocks to Minetta Lane, and 2 blocks east to MacDougal St.
What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
Food has went a bit downhill. Some of the apps were absolutely bland.
Used to be better.
The atmosphere is wonderful - it's just like a Parisien restaurant. The flavour of the Black Label burger was sunning, although the accompany fries were a copious, dry and dull. With a little more imagination this could be a world class dish. Service was attentive and really friendly and we'd certainly return.
Really like the place. Great food and service, can be a little crowded at times, but the scene is always fun.
Best burger I’ve been had! Food was impeccable as was the service. My 8 year old devoured her meal as well. Definitely be back!
The brunch that I ordered was "eggs and buttermilk biscuits". The plate also included broiled tomatoes and slices of ham. The eggs, bisuits, and tomatoes were fine. The ham was spectacularly mediocre, and the plate would have been better off without it. When the manager (?) asked how it had been, that is exactly what I told him. In spite of my protestations that I had had plenty to eat without the ham, he insisted on deducting the price of my glass of wine. So the restaurant definitely gets extra points for "class"!
Minetta Tavern has become our favorite place in the Village. We love the old New York atmosphere, the great food and the attentive service. We both had the Black Label burger for lunch and it was amazing, definitely living up to its fame. Looking forward to our next visit.
Exceptional service!!! Food was delicious. A little hiccup on timing (waited a long time for our entrees) but the server and manager were so kind and attentive - that it did not impact our dining experience negatively. That and the complimentary desserts helped!
Legendary. One word describes the place. All the dishes were excellent. Fillet mignon was simply outstanding.
Very nice place with a lot of history. Really poor service, going from: Out of the wine we ordered, they suggested another we accepted, with no info of higher price! To missing tools for our entre, really poor maincourse - and our waiter couldn't care less - and they kept forget to bring the things we ordered. A really bad experience on such a nice place. What a shame.
Excelente lugar. El servicio es espectacular. Las hamburguesas son de primera. En especial, el Black Label Burguer es buenisimo.
El pate de Foie tambien es buenisimo
The burger is amazing, great desserts, great service
We ate here before a play on the recommendation of a friend. It is definitely a neighborhood gem with excellent service and a great brunch menu. The waitress was quite knowledgeable and was able to give in depth answers to questions about the food. I had the signature burger and my wife had a truffle dish with poached eggs in a cream sauce. Both were excellent and we would highly recommend them. Overall a great dining experience and ambiance.
The vibe, drinks, service et all ARE OUTSTANDING!! The dirty martini is THE best I’ve had in the city and the steak frites is ridiculously good!
Hands down the best hamburger I’ve ever eaten. The bacon wrapped filet was amazing as well. Can’t wait to return
One of our favorite places in NYC! We try to go every time we visit! Old school and comfortable with great food and a bustling atmosphere.
Dined for friend’s birthday. High point was service- waiter was excellent. Decor is awesome! Food - escargot tasteless; pasta dish over cooked mushy ; trout and scallops were ok - very disappointed; waaay overpriced. Would be willing to give Minetta Tavern another chance.
Great place, really good food, service good but not fine dining service considering that one would expect in fine dining.
Just perfect. Waitress was awesome, and food was spectacular.
Great food, great service, cool venue. Black label burger as good as advertised!
Had a stellar night taking my 2 grown children out to dinner NYC style. Minetta Tavern is a classic restaurant oozing with ambiance and quite possibly the best steak in town. Our server was adorable, friendly and her wine suggestions were spot on, the black label burger my son ordered was superb and the Cote de boeuf my daughter and I shared was insanely delicious - with roasted marrow bone- and enough to allow my son to have a bit of as well. Will definitely come back. Again:)
It was our first time at Minetta Tavern, cause every time I passed by the place, I thought it was either closed or open for special occasions. I was wrong. We made reservations and got a great table for the three of us celebrating a friend’s engagement! The service, the food and ambiance were all wonderful! Time flew by. Before we knew it, we were already having dessert...
Definitely highly recommended and will be back!
Truly a wonderful experience. The atmosphere is so inviting and relaxing. Service is superb and the food delicious. It is one of my all time favorites and I cannot wait to return.
Excellent food, good ambience.
Our waiter was somewhat distracted, but great experience!
Way too noisy and crammed. Service was slow and somewhat unresponsive.
Bone marrow was mediocre.
Not worth the money.
Minetta NEVER disappoints! If it’s your first time there, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not ordering the Black Label burger!
Great authentic ambiance, food was fantastic - the medium rare burger was amazing. Service was great.
Absolutely the best burger in town!
Great service and the funniest waiter on earth!
Amazing food and service. The Black Label burger was as good as advertised. The chocolate souffle was perfect. Our server, Stephan, was awesome.
We had a fabulous time at Minetta’s! Great food and drinks and ambience. Enjoyed hearing the history of it!
It is my favourite Burguer in NYC and yes, the rest is pretty good as well!
We had a wonderful meal and a great time at Minetta tavern. Would go back as we really enjoyed it.
I had the Black Label Burger for the first time and it is now my number one burger in the city.
Il ristorante merita una visita solo per la location che trasuda storia, atmosfera ed eleganza. Il black label burger è qualcosa di eccezionale: la carne è saporita e succosa e merita pienamente il prezzo richiesto. Decisamente da non perdere
Delicious, great service, awesome atmosphere, quiet. Will definitely go back.
Came here on Friday before Memorial Day weekend with the fellas to celebrate my birthday. Service was top notch, had the Minetta Burger and it was the best burger I have ever had. It can be considered orgasmic. I ordered the burger in Medium. The drinks were delicious as well. It was a perfect night, I would definitely return here with my friends.
Great for the experience, food just okay.
Dined for lunch. Very crowded. Tight quarters for sure, but friendly, attentive, professional staff and delicious food. Will absolutely return, probably very soon.
One of my favorites
Great black label burger. Fries were stubby & warm. Best grand marnier soufflé ever and went well with vanilla ice cream.
great food, slow service always the issue. great authentic ambience
