Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
Take the 1 train to Christopher St/Sheridan Square and walk south (toward Grove St) on West 4th, 4 blocks. Continue south on 6th Ave 2 blocks to Minetta Lane, and 2 blocks east to MacDougal St.

What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
Perfect, as always. Despite being slammed the kitchen and servers deliver fabulous fare and a memorable experience each and every time. Special thanks to server Rebecca for being a GREAT ambassador of Minetta Tavern! Two Michelin Stars next year!!
Minetta Tavern is one of my favorites. Super professional and friendly staff that know exactly how to make you feel welcome and special. Food is good, but not necessarily the reason to come here. They've got an excellent wine list thought. I think Minetta Tavern is all about the place, the history and the people. A place to get a taste of how New York used to be.
Loved my waiter, Tony. This was the best version of salmon Benedict I have ever had, the latkes were much better than the bland English muffin and the dill in the hollandaise was perfect. Happy, happy girl!
We came with very high expectations for the best burgers in town.
It is not. It was ok and thats it .
First of all it took 45 minutes to the burgers to arrive.
We ordered medium and it arrived totally rear so we had to return it for another few minutes .
We also ordered Borata , it is disgrace calling this dish a Borata.
We received a tiny slice of cheese. Together with some veggies and balsamic.
Borata should be a ball of cheese otherwise don’t call it borata.
Together with over pricing and just an ok food our overall experience is not that good.
2 burgers =64$
1 glass of wine = 20$
Borata = 20
Side dish of spinach =11$
112$ for this lunch .
The Black Label Burger is by far the best burger I have ever had!
Just a great experience.
Loved the place, food, service everything about it.
A MUST to visit i New York
I'll be back. :) :)
The burger Black ... did not meet my expectation
We never miss Minetta when we’re in NY. It has an old school NYC vibe that we love and steak frites that we crave when we’re away. Love Minetta
Disappointed, more hype then substance
The bone marrow is an absolute must. We both got the aged burger, which was excellent. Though be aware however you order your meat, they go slightly under. I ordered my burger rare and it came about bleeding. Not what I expected but still delicious. Cocktails with seasonal ingredients are also worth trying.
Good food, Cote de boeff was cold Even though I think would’ve been excellent. We had left over and asked for it to go back which they never delivered to us!
I am not much of a burger person however this was by far the best burger I’ve ever had. My husband who’s a big foodie agreed. Highly recommend for a casual meal.
Great place great food. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable.
Food was amazing. Service was efficient but not overly hospitable. Still had a great time and would come back. Steaks were some of the best.
Six of us came yesterday to celebrate a friend's birthday at brunch. We were seated at what was clearly a 4 top but squeezed in and made it work. From there it was kind of downhill. Service was terrible. It took forever to get anything. We ordered and decided to get some bacon to start. He suggested we get 3 orders for 6 people. It was way too much and didn't arrive until the rest of our food had. We didn't even eat half. We had ordered some drinks and after twenty minutes inquired where they were. Clearly they'd been forgotten. When they arrived the waiter spilled the bottle of coke all over my fiancé. He was super apologetic and the manager offered to cover sry cleaning. The bill arrives and not a single thing was comped- not even the coke. We didn't expect to get our meal for free but that was a major customer service fail. We were all excited to come but won't be returning.
Brunch was delicious!
Took my wife there for a Birthday lunch was expecting something special with the black label burger, however just a burger and fries joint thick cuz bacon was very chewy
Does have old New York City charm but rather dirty bathroom was not very clean and smelled foul.
Some reviewers proclaim that MT has the best burger in NYC. Not. We had the burger. It’s okay, but nothing special. Not worth waiting for a reservation. We won’t be returning.
Big disappointment. Hadn't been in a couple of years and won't go back. Escargots with one drop of butter sauce ($24) is not the way to serve something that calls out for bread to dip. And no bread either (we eventually got some). Ordered the Blue Ribbon Hamburger (specialty) and couldn't tell it from Burger Heaven. For $30, it should have been outstanding and the touted caramelized onions were virtually invisible.
Nothing was bad, but our expectations (and the prices) were for a place of much higher quality.
It has a great old New York feel, so go for a drink and have dinner somewhere else.
Excellent ambiance. Great old world New York vibe!
We were waiting for our table at the bar, but Aaron, the bartender, was so friendly and such a knowledgeable mixologist, we decided just to dine at the bar with him. We had the Black Label burger (of course! The main reason we come!) This restaurant has the “best burger in the world” according to the late, great, Anthony Bourdain... and he was right. This charming, charismatic, though somewhat pricey ($30 for a hamburger) deserves its Michelin Star, and you deserve to check it out. Reservations are strongly recommended.
One of those places that we come visit every time we are in NYC!
Best burger I have ever had. The chocolate caramel tart was unreal as well (and I do not even like chocolate)
Whenever we make a booking with OpenTable we get seated next to the kitchen!!!!
The food is excellent! The black label burger was phenomenal and the soufflé perfect as well. A fun and energetic restaurant, great ambiance and a nice late night spot as well. This restaurant has been consistently good since I began coming here 7 years ago!
I was underwhelmed this time. The food was nothing special, maybe I ordered the wrong thing. The service was good from the waiter but the pace was slow.
I had the cheeseburger, and honestly the one at the Odeon was much better-to me.
We loved the atmosphere and ambiance with the curtain leading into the dining area and the old photos on the walls. The waitstaff were incredibly attentive. The food was amazing. Definitely recommend Minetta Tavern.
Still a NY classic experience. Split the Black Label burger to 4 as an appetizer and it was perfect before our Steaks. Limited menu but everything is correct. Grand Mariner soufflé is probably one of the best in the city.
It was a real pleasure to lunch at Minetta tavern with my daughter this Sunday of october. I'll comme back.
The food at this restaurant is great. However the service was wildly aggressive, but strangely slow at the same time. Our drinks took forever to arrive and they forgot to bring us bread. Then once we got our food they tried to clear our food and wine before we were even done. There were also several instance of upselling including the waiter literally asking 4 times if we wanted to have the soufflé. Very sad considering the high quality of the food.
As always, a great spot for lunch, drinks or dinner. Excellent service and outstanding food. A great New York experience. It’s a must stop if you are in the area.
Great location, good food, we had the duck and sea bass. The duck was incredible, the sea bass was good. Service was a little slow, but it was very busy. The only complaint is how load it gets in here. Hard for them to control that though.
Great cozy, Nostalgic environment. A lot of build up to the burger and food generally which was good but not exceptional. Service was spotty and long delay in getting seated, getting drinks and gaps between courses. This was a Sunday night so not sure how they handle the volume on fridays and Saturdays. I would recommend but with a few cautions.
We have been to this restaurant numerous times. We returned for the previously amazing burger on my son’s 19th birthday because he had it in the past and loved it. This was prior to learning he is lactose intolerant. I contacted the restaurant ahead this time to make sure he could have the burger and that they could accommodate him with side dishes as well, as he has some other food allergies too. They said he could have it on different bread. They did not say that they would not provide fries in oil he could consume, like vegetable oil or olive oil or even duck fat. They said they needed to sub out the fries. They agreed to provide sautéed spinach. When it arrived to the table it was missing the sautéed onion topping that made it delicious. It was a dry burger on bread. They would not sauté the onions without butter. They just eliminated it altogether without informing us. Then when the bill came, in addition to the $31 burger, they added another $5 to substitute the spinach for the fries. This restaurant should have communicated this to us before we came for our reservation. Very disappointed! Won’t return.
This was the most succulent burger that I have ever had. Sure, it could come off as a bit pricey and you wouldn’t have it every week, but it’s definitely worth a visit and more for special occasions.
Always great. The only debate: which of the to amazing burgers to get. The fish eater also really liked her trout.
50mins to get a burger that isn’t as good as you would think. Cool vibes, not worth it though.
Love love love this place go and enjoy
Always a great time at Minetta!
