Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.
Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."
We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.
Take the 1 train to Christopher St/Sheridan Square and walk south (toward Grove St) on West 4th, 4 blocks. Continue south on 6th Ave 2 blocks to Minetta Lane, and 2 blocks east to MacDougal St.
What Insiders Are Saying
Minetta Tavern in Greenwich Village is home to some of the best steaks, chops, burgers, and overall feel good vibes that New York City has to offer.
Excellent ambiance. Great old world New York vibe!
We were waiting for our table at the bar, but Aaron, the bartender, was so friendly and such a knowledgeable mixologist, we decided just to dine at the bar with him. We had the Black Label burger (of course! The main reason we come!) This restaurant has the “best burger in the world” according to the late, great, Anthony Bourdain... and he was right. This charming, charismatic, though somewhat pricey ($30 for a hamburger) deserves its Michelin Star, and you deserve to check it out. Reservations are strongly recommended.
One of those places that we come visit every time we are in NYC!
Best burger I have ever had. The chocolate caramel tart was unreal as well (and I do not even like chocolate)
Whenever we make a booking with OpenTable we get seated next to the kitchen!!!!
The food is excellent! The black label burger was phenomenal and the soufflé perfect as well. A fun and energetic restaurant, great ambiance and a nice late night spot as well. This restaurant has been consistently good since I began coming here 7 years ago!
I was underwhelmed this time. The food was nothing special, maybe I ordered the wrong thing. The service was good from the waiter but the pace was slow.
I had the cheeseburger, and honestly the one at the Odeon was much better-to me.
We loved the atmosphere and ambiance with the curtain leading into the dining area and the old photos on the walls. The waitstaff were incredibly attentive. The food was amazing. Definitely recommend Minetta Tavern.
Still a NY classic experience. Split the Black Label burger to 4 as an appetizer and it was perfect before our Steaks. Limited menu but everything is correct. Grand Mariner soufflé is probably one of the best in the city.
It was a real pleasure to lunch at Minetta tavern with my daughter this Sunday of october. I'll comme back.
The food at this restaurant is great. However the service was wildly aggressive, but strangely slow at the same time. Our drinks took forever to arrive and they forgot to bring us bread. Then once we got our food they tried to clear our food and wine before we were even done. There were also several instance of upselling including the waiter literally asking 4 times if we wanted to have the soufflé. Very sad considering the high quality of the food.
As always, a great spot for lunch, drinks or dinner. Excellent service and outstanding food. A great New York experience. It’s a must stop if you are in the area.
Great location, good food, we had the duck and sea bass. The duck was incredible, the sea bass was good. Service was a little slow, but it was very busy. The only complaint is how load it gets in here. Hard for them to control that though.
Great cozy, Nostalgic environment. A lot of build up to the burger and food generally which was good but not exceptional. Service was spotty and long delay in getting seated, getting drinks and gaps between courses. This was a Sunday night so not sure how they handle the volume on fridays and Saturdays. I would recommend but with a few cautions.
We have been to this restaurant numerous times. We returned for the previously amazing burger on my son’s 19th birthday because he had it in the past and loved it. This was prior to learning he is lactose intolerant. I contacted the restaurant ahead this time to make sure he could have the burger and that they could accommodate him with side dishes as well, as he has some other food allergies too. They said he could have it on different bread. They did not say that they would not provide fries in oil he could consume, like vegetable oil or olive oil or even duck fat. They said they needed to sub out the fries. They agreed to provide sautéed spinach. When it arrived to the table it was missing the sautéed onion topping that made it delicious. It was a dry burger on bread. They would not sauté the onions without butter. They just eliminated it altogether without informing us. Then when the bill came, in addition to the $31 burger, they added another $5 to substitute the spinach for the fries. This restaurant should have communicated this to us before we came for our reservation. Very disappointed! Won’t return.
This was the most succulent burger that I have ever had. Sure, it could come off as a bit pricey and you wouldn’t have it every week, but it’s definitely worth a visit and more for special occasions.
Always great. The only debate: which of the to amazing burgers to get. The fish eater also really liked her trout.
50mins to get a burger that isn’t as good as you would think. Cool vibes, not worth it though.
Love love love this place go and enjoy
Always a great time at Minetta!
Came here for my best friends birthday dinner - just the two of us. Our waiter was amazing! Unfortunately we had to wait for our table, but we had drinks so it wasn’t a big deal and despite already ordering a dessert they gave us a slice of chocolate fudge pie as a sorry we had to wait. Ended up being too much food! But totally worth it :)
Went for a late lunch to try the bone marrow and black label burger. Not cheap, but the food was excellent, and the portions substantial. I am now spoiled for burgers.
Perfect Food, the Black Label Burger is just perfect !!
Burger was a lot smaller than it used to be and not nearly as flavorful (esp at a $30 price point)
OUTSTANDING BURGER—Must try Black Tie burger....def a must-have if you’re in hunt for best burger in Gotham. Cheers!
Black label burger is the bomb. Skip the Minetta burger. Just go for the black label. Smokey, fatty goodness. Mmmmmm
Great place for special occasion. The bone marrow was a unique experience. The duck was outstanding. The moules were OK. Service when we got to the table was good but was very surprised that we had to wait for more than 20 minutes beyond our booked time
We had a wonderful experience/time. The food was amazing and worth the price. The waiter, Rashad, was the best. Only downside is the noise level...but, NYorkers thrive on noise.
Went during a weekday, non-peak at 2p for a late lunch. Food was expensive, and it was good but not the best burger I've ever had like my friend raved. Still a good time, so I rate this well.
Hamburguesa estupenda y el paté de foie suculento.
Los mejillones tienen un estilo muy perfumado que mató el sabor del mejillón. A mi no me gusto ese platillo, nada.
Great intimate and nostalgic mood while cozily elegant and serving some of the best steak and hamburgers in New York City .
Spent our anniversary here. We love Minetta so overall everything was splendid. We started with the burrata and the foie gras. Both scrumptious; however, felt like we should have ordered the bone marrow - man was that a sight and had much envy. I had the trout with crab in a lovely butter sauce and the man had the infamous burger. Of course, the chocolate soufflé bc how could you not. We each had two cocktails - Manhattans...very traditional but that’s how we like it - class act. Bill was $200
The restaurant is authentic and quaint the wait staff was attentive and professional. The ambiance was classic and the location is great. The prices are high relative to the area and the portion size. Likely better at night as opposed to Sunday brunch.
Don’t try to change your reservation in the day of - restaurant is unreachable by phone. Good service and ambiance but disappointed in the steak in the steak frites. Doesn’t need to to be that poor
Absolutely loved every second. The food is sensational and so is the service . One of the best places in NYC
This was my fifth time there. The menu changed slightly, the carrots we’re my favorite non potato side and now they’re gone. Had the black label burger to start which was ordered medium, but we got somewhat rare, which was still delicious. Cote de beouff for main course was on point as usual. My only issue is I noticed a pretty relative price increase from the last time I was there, along with the restaurant being extremely hot. 300.00 plus tip for two people with only one cocktail is pretty steep. Only ordered a burger to taste for app which we split. Two sides and cote de beouff for main course with coffee and soufflé for dessert.
I had a simply amazing dinner in this historic place! The food, staff, jazz music and atmosphere were just perfect!
Black Label Burger is the best burger I had ever!
