About Mill's Tavern
Taverns have had a constant important presence in American life since the late 1600's. Many of them, which were attached to inns, were opened as resting places for travelers needing a place to stop, relax and fortify themselves. Of course the local residents frequented the taverns too, purchasing drinks and meals as well as participating in lively conversations. Taverns were the focal point for neighbors to come together, exchange news, talk of politics, and share in the general feeling of conviviality. Taverns were firmly established as gathering places for the light hearted socializing, serious talk, and of course, a
hearty meal accompanied by a tasty libation or two.
In this American tradition, we at Mill’s Tavern welcome you with genuine enthusiasm. Our staff is warm, friendly, caring, and knowledgeable. So please come, relax, visit with friends and family. You will leave refreshed and nourished, body and soul.

Mill's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
I have been to the Mills many times and my last visit was exceptional, this visit was not. Not even close. The service was poor and not attentive (enough said on that). We ordered from the restaurant week menu, which I do not normally do, because I find the food to be on par with wedding food. That is pretty much what was served. Pre-prepped, bland, bad food. The calamari was cold and bland, the blue fish pate was bland and served with no accompaniment. The salads looked like they were sitting around forever. Ordered a half price bottle of wine (fume blanc), it was served warm and it took the waiter forever to bring the bottle. Ordered risotto with a beef shank and the waiter failed to tell us the shank was not included, but rather, the beef was incorporated into the risotto. Really! One of the entrees was the muscles, in which the portion was tiny. Maybe 8 muscles. You get more with the half order at Red Stripe. Dessert was bland and terrible. Espresso served cold. Wow! Total disappointment. Clueless waiter. Do not go to this restaurant during restaurant week. I sent the risotto back and ordered an app to cover and they charged for the more expensive dinner. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The host was pleasant and professional and the setting is nice. Only two bright spots. Yikes! Bad experience. Probably will never go again.
Mill’s typically is one of the best restaurants in the city of Providence. Historic Tavern feel with an excellent reputation for Steaks, Chops and Seafood. We have enjoyed our visits in the past but this time the service and hospitality did not live up to our expectations.
For the Providence area this restaurant is in the top tier. I was disappointed in the wine list as there are few choices in the moderate price range and mark up is 2.5X retail in most instances. If they allowed corkage, I would have graded them higher. There were 3 in our party, one had the scallops- 4 to a plate, average presentation, good taste. The acorn squash ravioli with rabbit meat was the best of the 3. Different combination which actually was quite tasty. The rib was adequate in presentation, tasted very good. We would recommend the ginger carrot soup as well.
Noise level was good but the place was half empty. As always sit away from the bar if you wish a quiet conversation.
Overall, a decent restaurant that is worth trying. Better than most in the area.
We ate here on Christmas Eve, which we've done several years in a row primarily due to the convenient location near our church. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the service was outstanding (our waitress - Kate - was very attentive). The food was good; some dishes were very good, like the calamari appetizer and the swordfish entree. For the price, however, the food should be a bit better. Entrees that are in the $30s and $40s, which we consider to be New York City prices, should be memorable. All in all, an enjoyable experience, albeit an expensive one.
My husband and I went to dinner at Mill's Tavern before seeing the Pops at PPAC. I really loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas and the lighting was soft. They were offering a great special, 3 courses for $30. I ordered the filet which was an extra $10, but totally worth it. My husband ordered the swordfish which was equally delicious. We enjoyed a nice bottle of red wine during dinner and capped off our night with an espresso martini. I would highly recommend Mill's Tavern to a couple or group of people looking for a nice night out.
This restaurant ambience and the food is always consistent and good. A "go to" kind of place.
However, the service is really lacking. You can sit at the bar and be invisible for at least 10 minutes until the bar tender wraps up his/her conversation. RUDE.
You can also sit at a table with a glass of water for the same amount of time, without being acknowledged and then wait forever for the food to be served (2 people). The waitress blamed it on the large party infant of us.. Since when does a large party overshadow a deuce? A good server will put the deuce in first..Then you have to flag down the server to get the check and
pick up the charge..Valet is no where to be found when you need your car..
So my friends, yes, your food and ambience is really great.. but please upgrade your waitstaff training on what service really looks like.
There is so much competition in the city..but why go elsewhere?
Especially on the "new menu" upgrade that is in the works for Mills Tavern?
Went there for our yearly family business Christmas party dinners. Food was amazing. We had everything from the raw bar, charcuterie board and salads. The entree portions were some of the largest portions I’ve seen for such a nice restaurant. We also had our 11yr old and 7yr old sons with us. The atmosphere was just right for kids. Both had the macaroni and cheeses side dishes. The portion was plenty for a kids meal. The wine list was top notch and the desert list very authentic. A must go.
This was our first time at Mill’s Tavern, but not our last. Great old (excellent condition) downtown classy restaurant. They have everything we look for in a dining experience. Good selection of food, delicious, great service, everything. Just put on your nice clothes and go!!
One of the few remaining really pleasant, cushy, warm and kinda plush-quiet restaurants around. It's become so rare to be able to have a conversation at a normal pitch or hear oneself think in a restaurant, even a good one - this is wonderful. The food and wine are EXCELLENT, the service professional and discreet, and, while pricey, particularly when one looks at the supposed 'tavern' schtick, it's very good value for money - great place for a romantic tete-a-tete, a family event with older folks whose hearing might get shattered in more raucous places, a chilly fall/winter evening when one wants really satisfying/stick-to-the-ribs AND sophisticated food. All-around good place - can't recommend highly enough as, at least, a specialish-occasion sorta place!
We’ve been here several times and the food and experience are always excellent. We had a party of 6 and all of us had a fantastic evening. Ambiance is good- quiet but not took quiet, upscale yet comfortable. Amongst us we ordered a wide variety of foods, most of which was shared, and all of which was delicious. I can’t wait to go back.
