About Mill's Tavern
Taverns have had a constant important presence in American life since the late 1600's. Many of them, which were attached to inns, were opened as resting places for travelers needing a place to stop, relax and fortify themselves. Of course the local residents frequented the taverns too, purchasing drinks and meals as well as participating in lively conversations. Taverns were the focal point for neighbors to come together, exchange news, talk of politics, and share in the general feeling of conviviality. Taverns were firmly established as gathering places for the light hearted socializing, serious talk, and of course, a
hearty meal accompanied by a tasty libation or two.
In this American tradition, we at Mill’s Tavern welcome you with genuine enthusiasm. Our staff is warm, friendly, caring, and knowledgeable. So please come, relax, visit with friends and family. You will leave refreshed and nourished, body and soul.

Mill's Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Our waitress, Naomi, was excellent. She took the time to get it right for wine and dinner selections with our questions. The food was excellent. Three of us had flies mignon and I had the swordfish. I have never tasted anything so delicious. Every thing about it was perfect.
I've been living in PVD for three years and never tried Mills Tavern (speaks to the variety around here).
It's honestly one of the best restaurants I've been to. The wood burning stove left an amazing flavor/crunch on my lady's steak, and my king salmon truly was the KING.
Phil was FANTASTIC, ask for Phil. The young hostess with the braided hair was very charming as well (missed her name).
Valentine's Day Dinner at 5:00pm worked out great. Last minute, day of reservation early dinner reservation worked out great. We had a PC Basketball Game at 7:00. We left by 6:30. Swordfish and petite filet were awesome, along with, of course, french fries. A couple of Tito's Martini's for the LOVERR and we were off to the Big Game.
We showed up on time for our reservation, but never got seated until an hour later ! Then we waited over an hour for our food ! My food was spectacular, but my wife's steak was cold - My guess is they forgot to cook mine, and hers sat there for a long time while they rushed to cook mine - When my wife told the waitress her steak was cold, she scraped it offer her plate and brought it back to reheat it - In the process of scraping the steak off her plate, she evidently spilled some of the food right into my wife's expensive pocket book !!!! Now it smells of garlic, onions or something like that - We did not notice the pocket book fiasco until after we got home when my wife stuck her hand into the pocket book and got food all over here hands - Total disaster - I've been to this restaurant approximately 15 times, all were great experiences, but for the last 3 0- They have been pretty bad - The prior problems were - 1 - They lost a $ 50 gift card, so we had to come up with more money 2 - Just bad service - Inattentive waiter - Etc......... 3 strikes and you're out as the umpires says -I won't be going back for sometime - In this most recent incident, I found the bartender to be totally inattentive to my wife and I - We sat at the bar for an hour and would not have been asked if we wanted a drink if I hadn't essentially flagged him down like one flags down a cab
I came here for a birthday dinner with a few friends. Everyone was very disappointed with the food. The salads had an odd savory taste, the steak was overdone, and the gnocchi was just not prepared well. We really wanted to like the food but it just wasn't quiet right.
Food was EXCELLENT... I am a person who never orders or even cares for deserts, but I tasted 2 desserts here and they were magnificent, I would come back just for a desert night. The food in general was all GREAT. The only draw back for the evening, was our waiter who wasn't awful she was just fair. Not attentive, and didn't communicate w/ us. We had long waits for bread and drinks.
Don’t recommend restaurant week. The food is way better during regular non promotions times. Our filet wasn’t cooked as well as they usually do. You could tell they were super busy with restaurant week diners so that took away from their normal quality. Starters were fine. Dessert was pretty good. They red wine list was really picked over. Will go back but not for this promo.
Birthday dinner for a friend, party of 3. We arrived on time for our reservation at 7:15 but did not get seated until after 8. If we showed up 45 mins late, I doubt our res would have been held. Service was slow in terms of food coming out. Very long time between app and main course. We did not linger and were still there until after 10 pm. Our waiter was excellent though! Not the first time I’ve had this sort of delay her but I cannot help but come back for the Portuguese Bread Pudding!
Very busy at the restaurant! It is restaurant week and has been busy all week per the staff. Great special prices on wine and food. A little loud for me since I have hearing impairment but all about us were having a great time. Our wait staff was excellent, professional and attentive without being bothersome. The food was wonderful and dessert was superb. Apple cake for my wife-Bread pudding for me. We always enjoy it at the Mills Tavern and tonite didn’t disappoint
We try to get there for the winter menu since they have venison. As always drinks, main course and desert were fantastic. We were disappointed in the fried calamari is was chewy. We told the waiter and he brought us another order. Same chewy calamari. He took the charge off of the bill. We have had calamari many times before in other restaurants and it has been light and flavorful. I can only assume that this was slightly over cooked. This is a five star restaurant except for the appy.
Waiter was disappointing on day 2 of restaurant week. He consistently messed up the order for apps and when asked for a black napkin (wearing black pants and a white napkin do not mix well) he misunderstood and brought me another white napkin. My dinner was delicious, my companion's mussel dish was too salty. Wine choices by the glass are "ok" Waiter was Jacob? or Joshua?
I have been to the Mills many times and my last visit was exceptional, this visit was not. Not even close. The service was poor and not attentive (enough said on that). We ordered from the restaurant week menu, which I do not normally do, because I find the food to be on par with wedding food. That is pretty much what was served. Pre-prepped, bland, bad food. The calamari was cold and bland, the blue fish pate was bland and served with no accompaniment. The salads looked like they were sitting around forever. Ordered a half price bottle of wine (fume blanc), it was served warm and it took the waiter forever to bring the bottle. Ordered risotto with a beef shank and the waiter failed to tell us the shank was not included, but rather, the beef was incorporated into the risotto. Really! One of the entrees was the muscles, in which the portion was tiny. Maybe 8 muscles. You get more with the half order at Red Stripe. Dessert was bland and terrible. Espresso served cold. Wow! Total disappointment. Clueless waiter. Do not go to this restaurant during restaurant week. I sent the risotto back and ordered an app to cover and they charged for the more expensive dinner. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The host was pleasant and professional and the setting is nice. Only two bright spots. Yikes! Bad experience. Probably will never go again.
Mill’s typically is one of the best restaurants in the city of Providence. Historic Tavern feel with an excellent reputation for Steaks, Chops and Seafood. We have enjoyed our visits in the past but this time the service and hospitality did not live up to our expectations.
For the Providence area this restaurant is in the top tier. I was disappointed in the wine list as there are few choices in the moderate price range and mark up is 2.5X retail in most instances. If they allowed corkage, I would have graded them higher. There were 3 in our party, one had the scallops- 4 to a plate, average presentation, good taste. The acorn squash ravioli with rabbit meat was the best of the 3. Different combination which actually was quite tasty. The rib was adequate in presentation, tasted very good. We would recommend the ginger carrot soup as well.
Noise level was good but the place was half empty. As always sit away from the bar if you wish a quiet conversation.
Overall, a decent restaurant that is worth trying. Better than most in the area.
We ate here on Christmas Eve, which we've done several years in a row primarily due to the convenient location near our church. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the service was outstanding (our waitress - Kate - was very attentive). The food was good; some dishes were very good, like the calamari appetizer and the swordfish entree. For the price, however, the food should be a bit better. Entrees that are in the $30s and $40s, which we consider to be New York City prices, should be memorable. All in all, an enjoyable experience, albeit an expensive one.
My husband and I went to dinner at Mill's Tavern before seeing the Pops at PPAC. I really loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas and the lighting was soft. They were offering a great special, 3 courses for $30. I ordered the filet which was an extra $10, but totally worth it. My husband ordered the swordfish which was equally delicious. We enjoyed a nice bottle of red wine during dinner and capped off our night with an espresso martini. I would highly recommend Mill's Tavern to a couple or group of people looking for a nice night out.
This restaurant ambience and the food is always consistent and good. A "go to" kind of place.
However, the service is really lacking. You can sit at the bar and be invisible for at least 10 minutes until the bar tender wraps up his/her conversation. RUDE.
You can also sit at a table with a glass of water for the same amount of time, without being acknowledged and then wait forever for the food to be served (2 people). The waitress blamed it on the large party infant of us.. Since when does a large party overshadow a deuce? A good server will put the deuce in first..Then you have to flag down the server to get the check and
pick up the charge..Valet is no where to be found when you need your car..
So my friends, yes, your food and ambience is really great.. but please upgrade your waitstaff training on what service really looks like.
There is so much competition in the city..but why go elsewhere?
Especially on the "new menu" upgrade that is in the works for Mills Tavern?
Went there for our yearly family business Christmas party dinners. Food was amazing. We had everything from the raw bar, charcuterie board and salads. The entree portions were some of the largest portions I’ve seen for such a nice restaurant. We also had our 11yr old and 7yr old sons with us. The atmosphere was just right for kids. Both had the macaroni and cheeses side dishes. The portion was plenty for a kids meal. The wine list was top notch and the desert list very authentic. A must go.
This was our first time at Mill’s Tavern, but not our last. Great old (excellent condition) downtown classy restaurant. They have everything we look for in a dining experience. Good selection of food, delicious, great service, everything. Just put on your nice clothes and go!!
