Mill Pond Steakhouse
Ate at Mill Pond for the first time last night. Don’t let the unassuming rustic decor or its location in Boykin SC fool you- the food and service are top notch. And this is coming from a resident of and frequent diner in Charleston. Our table had the 20 oz. dry aged ribeye, rack of lamb, stuffed trout special, salads, Boykin cornmeal encrusted oysters, fried green tomato Napoleon, fried okra, mashed potatoes, and shared the cherry cobbler for dessert. My steak was tender, juicy and flavorful although missing the earthy funk one associates with a dry aged steak. It’s not better than Halls in Charleston, but it was very good. The trout dish was outstanding and my sister-in-law raved about the rack of lamb. The fried green tomato Napoleon was good, although rather chewy. The oysters were sheer perfection as was the fried okra. And the cherry cobbler was delicious. Portions were generous across the board. Each of the sides easily fed 4 people although I’d skip the mashed potatoes and try the scalloped potatoes next time. Our server, Daniel, was outstanding! He was knowledgeable, attentive, personable and went out of his way to accommodate a wheat allergy in our group. Overall, a great meal and experience, and I will dine there again the next time I’m in town.
The food and experience was top notch!
Fantastic. Steak was one of the best I've ever had...anywhere. View was wonderful. I hidden gem! We drove down from Davidson, NC specifically for dinner. Never driven two hours just for dinner. so glad we did.
We do not order steak out....simply put we prepare it better at home than most restaurants do. UNLESS we are talking about the Mill Pond. Mill Pond Steakhouse is the ONLY restaurant to order steak....and those potatoes....mmmmmmmmm. The service is always top notch, on point, knowledgable and friendly.
This trip was a celebration of my mother's 88th birthday and Patrick made her first Mill Pond experience a memorable one! The pond view at sunset, rustic surroundings, and beautiful fire only made the experience that much more enchanting. We are looking forward to the next opportunity to go!!
The overall feel was great. The staff was friendly and the service was great. I had the 16 ounce ribeye and my wife had the 8 ounce filet. Each steak costs about $44. We ordered the succotash and the garlic mashed potatoes, both of which were good. That is as far as the good part of the review goes. Our steaks were not that good. For being a steakhouse I expected much better, particularly considering the price. When they brought the steaks out, I noticed my ribeye steak was not very brown. It was not seared or charred at all. It was just light brown. I ordered it medium rare and my wife ordered her filet medium well. The were both cooked to correct doneness but my ribeye did not have a lot of flavor. There was no spice on it all all and it was just bland. To make it worse, at least 8 ounces of my steak was fat and gristle. The filet my wife ordered was tender, but once again, the flavor was off. Not a great filet. We had really high hopes for this place because my daughter and son-in-law have had fantastic meals here. We were celebrating our anniversary and wanted something special but it was quite a letdown. We were disappointed to say the least.
Even though we had a reservation we had to wait fo 15mins. Once we were seated our server didn’t offer us cornbread , rushed through the specials, she didn’t even bring us any of our food. The only time she we did see her was to bring us the check. She didn’t even offer us the desert menu we requested it. While the food was good our service was poor.
I thought the lighting was way too dark. The food was not what I had expected - the steak was cooked good, but for $75 each I would have thought it would have been better with a better presentation. The steak was swimming in a reduction sauce. I couldn't even see the steak or scallop. And not even sure if there really was caviar on the plate. Scalloped potatoes were hard & nothing special. For spending $250 for 2 people - I would have thought it would have been better. Very disappointed. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
Mill pond is always excellent in every way. When making a reservation ask for Bill McCracken as your waiter as he is well-versed in all things restaurant & wines and 100% attentive.
Absolute must try steakhouse. I don't know that I've ever had a better steak in my life! It's a bit of a trip from Columbia, but absolutely worth it for special occasions.
Amazing first night. Only downside was we were placed in the bar area right beside kitchen. A lot of loud movement around us. But hey someone had to be placed there so we get it. Only bleak spot on an otherwise amazing night.
I had the ribeye steak and I have to say I've cooked and had a better steak taste myself. The flavor was just not there. I've been here before and everything was outstanding but not really this time.
Valentine dinner a day early! All was perfection
It was great!! We love the restaurant and will keep coming.
Old friends getting together. Great food
This was our first visit. We had to eat in the bar even with a reservation and were disappointed with that. After being seated we waited so long for someone to acknowledge we were even there, I eventually had to ask a server if we were going to be waited on. When the server finally came she was not dressed the same as the other servers. She didn't have a tie on. After she took our drink orders and served them she then proceeded to serve another table and left us waiting to place our order. Eventually our orders were taken. The food was excellent and the serving of the courses was better after that. We expected better service especially for the prices we were paying. Because of the food we will go back to see if we can have a better experience another time.
For an upscale restaurant service should have been better
Very disappointing steak and pricey menu probably makes this a one and done experience.
Daniel was an amazing waiter. The food and drinks were fabulous!
The amazing setting next to a fire place on a cold rainy night was only topped by the food. This place was amazing. This is some of the best food I have had in the southeast. The staff was courteous and attentive.
Great experience. The one thing that would have been better is if the pathway to the front door was better draining of the water from the rain that we were having that night. You can't help the rain but you might want to look at a better way to drain the rain from the walkway.
The Millpond steak house was as wonderful as we had hoped. Maryann welcomed us and made us feel comfortable. All of the staff were very nice and attentive to our needs. The bone in ribeye was cooked perfectly rare and extremely flavorful. My wife raved about the seafood dinner. The wine list was extensive. The homemade cobbler was magnificent! We can’t wait for the next opportunity to dine again.
As always, our go to place for a special occasion. Bill, our waiter, is phenomenal! His attention to detail, personal touch and level of service always exceeds our expectations! The food was delicious. The chef even accommodated a personal request for an addition to one of the specials. We love this place!
ALWAYS phenomenal food !
ALWAYS attentive service!
ALWAYS interesting surroundings.
We do not eat steak out bc we make it better at home - but this place- the steak is flavorful, juicy, tender...trust me, get the steak, ALWAYS!!
Everything was good. Our steak was good but the twice baked potato was a little dry. The homemade peach cobbler and ice cream was delicious. Great service and atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back.
Excellent everything! The staff have been taught well- very attentive, professional and service oriented . I wish our Columbia restaurants would understand the value of good service. The food is consistently delicious- and love the ambiance!
Daniel our server always makes the experience worthwhile.
A little on the pricey side for the food. My steak wasn’t cooked properly but they tried to correct the situation. Great old house and atmosphere.
My husbands steak was amazing as well as the sides. I was a little disappointed in my scallops. They were a little fishy tasting and extremely salt. The grits underneath them were cold and hard.
We have been here before and the food was excellent. However this meal was disappointing. My husband's rack of lamb half was cooked to perfection and the other half was raw. My medium well done steak and my daughters were both rare. The service was very good, but when you are paying top prices you expect better. Disappointed with this meal.
great meal as always
The Mill Pond is one of our favorite restaurant to take out-of-town visitors to or for special occasions (this was an anniversary dinner). We arrived early, so we had drinks at the bar while waiting for our table. The atmosphere is rustically elegant - more rustic in the bar area, but both the bar and the dining room are comfortable and inviting. The service, as always, was outstanding. Although the restaurant was very busy, the staff was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. Between us, we had a chopped salad, the loaded twice baked potato, the sirloin and the scallops. Each dish was delicious and the portions were generous. I've never been disappointed at the Mill Pond.
Daniel, food server was excellent. Description of food, history of place very nice. Lobster and steak outstanding.Caesar salad was not what I expected, edible but not classic. Mashed potatoes were cold, but were big enough for 4 people.. I appreciated keeping table clean but young woman was hastily removing everything before we were actually done. Still, it was a nice drive, great view and excellent service. Food overpriced a bit.
I had a wonderful dinner here with my family to celebrate my birthday. It’s a very lovely place to eat and decorated nicely for Christmas. The food was outstanding!
The food wonderful as it always is. The sad part of our evening was the service. I’m assuming our waitress was on “newer” she failed on her welcoming, sharing on the the nightly special other than- “ the bass looked good.”
Wonderful wait staff, delicious food. Worth the drive.
1st time and lived up to the reputation! Absolutely fantastic food!!
The food was outstanding and service impeccable.
Hands down the BEST steakhouse I have ever been to.
Exceptional service, relaxing atmosphere.
The Mill Pond never disappoints! We've been several times and the atmosphere, the service and the food are always excellent.
Excellent food in a wonderful atmosphere! Take care to book a mill pond table!
