Mildred's has always been quite fine but the dinners seemed especially interesting this time - Cornish game hen three ways, incredible veal sweetbreads, etc. , making for a particularly fine evening.
Florida Trend Gold Spoon restaurant. In town for business and visiting friends. We were seated promptly, service was friendly and courteous, nice menu selection and desserts were great. Will visit again and would recommend as a great place to visit for special occasion and for those wanting an original menu.
The food was good not great. The staff was very kind and waiter was nice.
We've dined at Mildred's for nearly 15 years. We come to Gainesville often for U.F. events and this is one of our favorite restaurants in town. The menu is not extensive but changes often (maybe daily) so we see new items every time we dine here. Dishes are creative, typically include local products and are attractively presented. The wine list is also not extensive but we usually can find something we like and the wines are moderately priced. Service is better than most in Gainesville - having a well-trained staff can be a real challenge in a college town - turnover leaves you with servers short on experience, which sometimes shows at Mildred's, but they are always enthusiastic, friendly, and for the most part knowledgeable. Hat's off to the Gills and their managers for consistently providing good service. Now, the killer is the dessert display case that you see as soon as you walk in - it's temptation from the start. If you can make it to dessert you won't be disappointed.
The service was great. Food was creative and tasted wonderful. Wine list was very fine and server recommended an excellent wine. All this and the price was very reasonable.
Very good, we have two difficult eaters in the family. One is vegan and the other who does not eat dairy and gluten. The waiter was very accommodating and did not grimace or complain about modifying the dishes. Great smokey margaritas. Would go again.
Great service, food and wine as always! This is our favorite restaurant in Gainesville!
Very nice and small restaurant with great service and exellent food
Service remains truly excellent, attentive, and warm. Mildred's is right to focus on locally sourced ingredients of highly fresh quality. Beet salad with frisee lettuce is one of the best dishes in all of Central Florida. Cakes are also outstanding.
Desserts and bread deserve 5 stars. This may be a restaurant to try and judge for yourself. I usually don't bother to review restaurants we don't like, and feel kind of bad for rating it 3 but we spent a lot for average. The casual, sister restaurant is good but Mildred's didn't live up to our expectations with a modern bar, oddly outdated dining room and French-ish food that wasn't superior for the price. The country pâté' and foie gras were dry and crumbly; could have forgiven the country but both? It needs a clear concept.
This restaurant has a wonderful, creative menu. The service was friendly without being invasive. It's a small place with only a few tables, so a nice quiet meal is guaranteed.
Pate' appetizer is very good and nicely garnished with pear slices and frisée.
Went for sons graduation. Food was mediocre. Way overpriced for the quality and quantity of food.
Two people at my table ordered the New York Strip. I know NYS is prone to being chewy but both steaks were very very hard to cut much less chew. Our plates were all over the table while we did battle trying to cut the meat. The steaks were cooked to perfection, So I guess the problem is with their meat supplier.
40 years ago we ate in a pizza restaurant at the same location as your restaurant. We tried to relive that day by going to Mildred's. We were pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was and what excellent service we were given. It is our new favorite place for special celebrations. Thanks for the memories!
First time here and food was original and well-presented. Great service from Ben, good wine recommendations. My salmon was over cooked but was rectified quickly to my satisfaction. A welcome change from the large chains that pass for dining.
Took our kids (college students) out to dinner. Good food, above average choices, easy to talk (quiet), unique beer selection. Not a student hangout, more mature group and setting.
Great place to eat if you are visiting Gainsville. The grilled pork chop was the best ever. Nice quiet music and very good service. I loved it.
Celebrating my wife's birthday. we started with a Martini each, one with Uncle Neds Gin the other with Boomsma. We shared 1st courses, the Spicy Italian Meatball was amazing as was the Straw Mushroom with white Anchovy. Absolutely amazing. My wife had the pork chop as her main course with turnip and field acre peas. I enjoyed the Duck Breast. Accompanied with an excellent glass of Pino Noir. Dinner has never been better. The staff greeted my wife with an honest Happy Birthday and a gratis glass of Champagne.
once again the chef and staff at Mildreds Big City have impressed.
We had a pleasant dinner for 4. The only real issue was my hanger steak, which was so gristly as to be virtually inedible. I should have sent it back but didn't. Hanger steak can be tough on occasion, but nothing like what I was served.
One can count on Mildred's for good food. The ambiance is inviting and it's a great place for conversation. Wine list is impressive. Parking has never been a problem and the staff is friendly and welcoming. My wife and I both had the salmon dish and were very pleased with it.
We come to Mildred's for special occasions and for a great dining experience with friends. The atmosphere is wonderful if you want to be able to talk with the people at your table. The service is very good and the servers are knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings. My food is normally cooked just as I like it (although one visit ago the fish was overcooked for my taste, but still very good). Mildred's may be a bit pricey for some, but we find it well worth it. It has become a favorite.
As usual, they hit a home run. Great service from April (she gave terrific advice about the wine).
Outstanding food. But after dining there for 10+ years the decor could use a little updating. Overall, a wonderful experience.
Wonderful food, wine and service ensured a special and enjoyable occasion for our party of six.
We celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary at Mildred's! The food was great, the service was excellent and most certainly we would eat there again!
Mildred's is always fine - good food simply prepared and nicely presented and the service is pleasant and reasonably efficient. The prices are excellent. There's just a slight lack of excitement in the overall menu, however, although the crispy chicken liver appetizer slips into the more exciting category.
We have been dining in Gainesville for 5 years with kids at UF. How did we miss this place? Food was gourmet, service was exceptional and ambiance was very pleasant. A great upscale dining experience.
The go to place when we're in Gainesville. Great coconut cake
Friends get together expecting usual high quality meals from Mildred's was a great disappointment.
The first and second course would rate good to excellent including the Housemade Boudin Blanc Sausage and the Blue Cheese salad.
Third Course included entrees:
New York Strip Steak - Chewy lacking flavor.
Braised Colorado Lamb Fettucine Flavors so poor only half was consumed by guest.
Duck breast-Temperature was rare to medium when asked for medium to well done. USDA recommends a temperature of 160 to 170 degrees for safety.
Oregon Pinot noir was excellent with dinner
Taittinger Brut Millesime 2005 served warm; overflowing when opened due to warm temp; capped and took home.
dessert of Carrot Cake and Coconut creme cake were excellent
Recommend brunch/lunch. Will not return for dinner.
Food was just OK , mostly small portions for the money, limited to sides pre-paired with entrees which didn't really appeal to any of us. Desserts looked great but were dry and pretty bland. Largely ignored by staff; they expertly glossed past what should have been obvious disappointment on our part.
The food is always unique and tasty. But we had a wonderful server, Kevin, who was attentive and patient. Kudos to the trainers of your staff.
We went for our anniversary, we went about 7 years ago and had a fine meal. This time the experience was mediocre. The bread was cold and not anything different from anywhere else. The grouper was fair , nothing special and had a small amount of mixed arugula on top and was good. My husband had the duck which was very tasty. The thing I noticed the most was the decorating--very tired looking, same as it has been for years and it looks dated and depressing, needs an update. The service was very good. The desserts excellent. Until the ambience is updated I won't return.
We booked at Mildred's for a graduation lunch and it was excellent! This hidden gem of a restaurant had a set menu that was absolutely delicious. There was something for everyone in our party of 7, and everything we ordered was delicious, especially the salmon. We will definitely return for dinner when we visit our son this summer.
Great variety on the menu. Very inventive and unique offerings. Enjoyed our Easter Brunch. There was something for everyone in our group. Great presentation and delicious food.
Ignore that Mildreds is located at the end of a strip mall because the food is worth the hunt. We had a range of salads and entrees, and all were very well prepared and seasoned. The farmhouse salad was exceptional and the strip steak had a delicious flavor and was grilled perfectly. The wine list had a good range of choices and prices. Service was warm and professional and added to the enjoyment of our evening. When we're back in the Gainesville area, we'll also be back to Mildreds.
We were seated and immediately tended to with water and attention from our waiter. I wanted a dry Chardonnay and the waiter made a recommendation. I accepted but then the waiter arrived with two samples for me to decide. He was attentive throughout the meal. My husband and I ordered delicious salads. I chose the mullet fish with fried risotto and asparagus. The fish was dry and tough but the risotto and asparagus were delicious. My husbands steak was very good. We shared biscotti and coffee for dessert. It was a tasty ending.
Delicious food. Good service.
We had guests from out of town and took them here. Even though they were from the Washington DC area and go to many good restaurants there, they thought this restaurant was excellent. Great selection of unusual meals that are well prepared.
If you are looking for an outstanding food experience in a high end setting, Mildred's is a place for you. From the outstanding service, to actual white table clothes without plastic and comfortable chairs you can relax and truly pace yourself for a lovely evening.
Let the server and chef pair your wine selection with your food choices. You won't be disappointed. We will definitely be a repeat customer when we are in Gainesville.
I have always had a good experience dining at Mildred's, except this last time that I was trying to recruit someone to Gainesville, which is not known for its sophisticated dining experience.
Mildred's failed me miserably. The service was too bad, which made the food taste mediocre. I was very disappointed.
