In 1972, Mikado Restaurant opened as the first Japanese restaurant in Edmonton.
Mikado has many customers who have continued to visit since opening in 1972.
Mikado relocated in 1989, modernized the interior design & business increased.
Since that time, we have strived to be "Precious moments with precious people.

We booked online for a nice table for our 12 year old granddaughter's birthday meal with Grandma and Grandpa. We were taken straight to a nice table in the corner opposite the open kitchen that had a "Reserved" sign on it. Our server knew it was a special meal and paid great and pleasant attention to our Granddaughter throughout the meal. A complimentary dessert with sparkler was provided on a lovely tray with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate along with raspberry coulis. We each had a bento box and it was a delight to see our dear granddaughter tuck in with her chopsticks - "no, I don't need a fork!"
Mikado Japanese Cuisine is one of our favorite restaurant. However it was our first time having our meals at the South side location.
What should I say about Mikado! Reservation is recommended.
What I expect from a Japanese restaurant and much more. Staffs are skillful, professional and responsive. There are no problems in finding a parking space.
There are booths, Tatami rooms as well as a large sushi bar from having lunch to more formal/private dinner.
Let’s talk about food. I always go for the bento box for lunch. As for dinner, I tried most of the menu. Salad, BBQ squid, fresh oysters, tempura, chicken Kara-age, Beef/tuna Tataki, blue fin tuna, rolls, sushi, sashimi, Nigiri sushi, udon, grill fish and special promotion items. Fish is always fresh, tempura & kara-age is deep fried and never dried, fish & squid are perfectly grilled. No disappointments at all. This time, we tried desserts too.
I definitely will go back for my lunch or dinner, for blue moment or for celebration, and for just because. I have to mention that it is a pleasure taking photos of the food.
Tip: promotion menu is for limited time. So go back quick if you like it.
We came to this restaurant for a family meal. The restaurant looked half empty but despite having a reservation had to wait quite a bit for seating. The baby was hungry while we were waiting for food. We went to feed him a couple mini size baby duck snacks. A waitress came up to us and asked that we not feed it to the baby as no outside food is allowed. Portion size has decreased and it took several times to convey our order to the server before it was understood.
The food and service was good at mikado. The communication between OpenTable and mikado was terrible. Arrived and they didn't have my reservation so they asked to see the confirmation. I showed them the time and date of the reservation and they said I must have the wrong location. So I showed them the confirmation of the location as well but apparently they didn't receive it. So we had to wait an additional 20 minutes to get a table which isn't the worst thing in the world but definitely was not appreciated.
This was our second time here, first time for dinner, & it was a bit of a disappointment. I had made an online reservation, we arrived about 10 mins early, checked in & was told we'd have to wait ~10 mins for our table to be set up, while we spotted several empty tables close by unoccupied. While we waited 10-15 mins for our table, 3 couples who walked in after us, without reservations got seated ahead of us. I finally had to walk up to the podium to ask if the 1st girl we had talked to, had forgotten to seat us? And then we got taken to our table, so essentially I didn't have to book a table, I guess.
The waitress was great, my sushi was very good also, but my husband's bento box was quite lackluster. The teriyaki beef was lukewarm & covered in a thick goopy sauce that looked very unappetizing. My husband didn't end up eating half of his meal. The cocktails & squid legs were good. But based on the poor first impression, the cost of our bill, & the mediocre quality of his bento box, my husband said we're "never coming back". Also, the restaurant was busy, but the ladies room was totally neglected. One out of the 3 stalls was out of order, then 1 stall had no toilet paper, the sink ran out of soap, & there was no paper towel, sounds like management desperately needs to step up & improve on better customer service.
Requested for private room when booking. Told that no room available since the person jotting down reservation forgot to book private room. No apology. Front staff took us to the table but then it wasn't ready. Waitress too preoccupy with a larger party so have to ask for water and refill from others. Fairly disappointed with this location compare to the one downtown.
Went to mikado for a birthday dinner for two. Tried different kinds of food and the waitress was quite helpful with suggestions. We asked for some sake for tasting and she brough in small quantities which we thought was good. Food was really good. Beef teriyaki was spicy and tasty and the sashimi was really fresh. MochI ice cream that we shared was also very nice. Will go there again.
I took a dear friend for lunch and I have been big fan of Mikados since 1984, eating there 3`4 times a year. The last time I dined at the south location, it was sub par. This time the food was horrible, the tea luke warm, the meso soup did not even resemble meso soup. Before I paid I told the server that since she was great I would only be tipping her 10%, but I normally tip 20-25% but the food was so bad. I asked that she tell the manager which she did. We visited for another 30 minutes and no one came to talk to us. I sent them an email explaining everything and no one responded. I thought I would wait for the Christmas and New Years rush to pass in case the management was too busy to respond. Well three weeks and no response. Ive had better Japanese food at take out places. I will never go there again.
We booked a table thru OpenTable and arrived a couple of minutes prior to the booking but still had to wait in line for 15-20 minutes. There were empty tables, yet the person bring us to our table was just standing there and chatting with her colleague. It was definitely not welcoming.
After being seated to the table, we had to wait another 10 minutes for our server to come to take our drinks order.
The tempura was quite oily and the spider roll was very dry. The sushi was also breaking apart and just wasn't appealing overall. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.
I took my daughter there for her 27th birthday . Ken was our server ... he was very nice and friendly. I told him it was Lisas birthday so he brought us some dessert to celebrate . The food was excellent and I like how authentic it looked inside. I will be going there again soon and will tell all my friends about Makidos.
We had a very enjoyable dinner at Mikado. The service was a little slow, but it was busy and we weren't in a rush so it didn't bother us. The food was fantastic as always, very fresh and a nice presentation. We were checked on multiple times through the meal to make sure everything was going smoothly. I always enjoy being able to watch the sushi chefs work, and the welcoming atmosphere that Mikado provides. Thanks for a great dinner!
