Mikado at Desert Springs JW Marriott Ratings and Reviews
We made a reservation. When we arrived, this is the first restaurant at which we were not made to feel welcome at all. The hostess did not greet us, but she made us feel like we were being grilled, asking us if we planned to have their main course at their common dining tables, or to have appetizers. We were not sure and hoped to make that decision to have either at our table. Turns out we had no option but to have their sit down Japanese dinner with seating around the chef, or sit in the lounge if we wanted sushi rolls and appetizers. This was not at all explained on their website. The lounge is small and has very limited un-comfortable seating, appearing more to be a place where people just grab a quick drink before heading into the main seating area. We did order sushi rolls and a drink, which were all fine. When were leaving the hostess did not make any effort to thank us for coming, or even acknowledge us, which she had ample time to do as there was no one checking in. Very disappointed. We will not be back.
Great experience! We were in town for a gymnastics meet that ended late. They accommodated our large, tired party with all of our food restrictions and allergies. The chef was funny and kept the kids laughing way past their bedtimes. Great service, wonderful atmosphere, delicious food. Would definitely recommend and we'll go back for sure the next time we're in town!
Always enjoy the overall experience from the boat ride to the dinner show! However, stressed how this was a 40th Birthday celebration and asked for a fun cook as I have been for bdays previously and cooks do special things! Unfortunately, our cook was not made aware it was for 40th Birthday and hostess didn’t seem to care when she was asked. Someone in our party finally said something and the cook was surprised as he hadn’t been informed! Server said if someone told him he knew but didn’t inquire as to wether or not he was aware when spending over $400 At restaurant that asked if it was a special occasion and they dropped the ball is a little disturbing! Not the cooks fault but just a bummer
Went for New Years Eve and had a wonderful time! The Chef's are very entertaining and know how to have fun with everyone. The food and all it's fixing's is great and cooked to perfection. We would recommend this restaurant for any special ocasion or just fot a night out.
The type of experience you have is greatly dependent upon the chef you get and with whom you are seated. We have been here before where we had a really fun time whooping it up. This time we were seated with a sedate family and a low key chef. But either way, the food is excellent and its worth the trip. Prices are on the high side, but you're paying for a show from the chef. Also, the portions are very large, so lots available for a doggie bag and yummy leftovers the next day.
Let me begin by explaining the reason for the noise level being energetic is due to small children not being quieted by their parents. The food was well prepared and we were well taken care of by the chef and waitress. However, the reservation did not detail seating is only teppanyaki.
Also, the magic of taking a "boat" to the restaurant was squashed by the Marriott. We were told three different times (4, 4:30 and 5pm) the boats were beginning to begin taking passengers and that five boats would be running. We had reservations at 5pm and were in line at 4pm for the TWO boats that were running. We were informed the "ride" would take 10 minutes. We explained we had reservations at 5pm and were concerned we would not be on the boat in time. Again at 4:30pm, we were told, "don't worry, there's going to be five boats running"; only two boats were running. Long story short-kinda-we had to get out of line at 4:45 to quickly walk over to the restaurant. So much for a magical evening.
My recommendation is to get in line an hour earlier than your reservation and make a later reservation if possible.
Our service was great . Our food was great. Our chef was great! The lighting is so bright sitting at those big tables - it would have been great if after he finished cooking, they dimmed the lights so you didn't feel like you were in a big warehouse with bright bright bright lights shining down on you the whole time.
The experience was great once we were seated. The young lady at the front desk was quite rude and insisted we must have our total group to be seated. Interestingly the last time at the restaurant they were quite happy to seat us and take our drink orders, while we waited for two additional people. We had even shared the fact that the missing two were walking over! Then we were told we had missed our window for the reservation and would have to wait further. Not a great start when entertaining clients.
We now understand there is little authenticity in this type of bash and klang cooking. The top teppan places in Japan would not be caught dead with this "look at me" set of antics. There were no explanations of the food, the cooking method nor the quality of the meats. Just bash and klang. Not only that, none of the chefs at the teppans were Japanese. I'm not saying they all must be Japanese, but wouldn't you think that Japanese food should be cooked by Japanese people? Oh well - now we know.
While vacationing in Palm Springs, we celebrated our 5th year anniversary and recent engagement at Mikado. Highly recommend!! The food was delicious, the drinks tasty, and the entertainment was priceless! Our chef kept us engaged the whole meal and our food was cooked to perfection.
Certainly more on the pricey side, but if you are able to, I highly recommend it!!
Smokey---overhead exhaust systems were there--but not used?
Big, drunk groups of diners eating huge and tasteless bowls of food.
Fun and games included smashing shrimp and tossing into diners' mouths by chefs.
Terrible food, terrible atmosphere and service--a total disappointment!
Annabelle says: Food quality and chef entertainment was terrific as always! Good value, as Mikado changed the sides from soup and salad to one or the other....I was surprised! and they gave my family both! That's special. VERY good with the youngsters.
We love the boat ride at JW Marriott also.
