About Mijares Mexican Restaurant
Over 92 years ago Jesucita Mijares fled the revolution in Mexico searching for a new life for her family. After settling in Pasadena she opened a small tortilla factory. It quickly became known for its tiny restaurant featuring Jesucitas's original recipes, tortillas, tamales, and sauces made with her metate stone grinder carried from Mexico.

Mijares Mexican Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We love Mijares! The staff, the food, the margaritas, mariachis and the woman who makes the guacamole at your table makes this experience unlike any other Mexican restaurant in LA. We are lucky to have this family tradition for over 90 years in Pasadena. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Really enjoyed the salmon dinner it actually has vegetables, asparagus, in a Mexican Restaurant. Thank you.
I refuse to purchase an alcoholic beverage here because they consistently short the alcohol. Server told us that many complain, but that even though the bar is told, the drinks come out the same....... weak.
We still come here for the food, just skip the mixed drinks, save your money.
Checked in with the Maitre'd (a short bald man) at the front desk, we told him of our Open Table reservation, he acknowledged us and called us by name. Then after we left the restaurant they turned us in as a "No Show". Apparently they didn't even check their charge card records before turning in the "No Show". Their laziness cost me time and effort to get credit for our visit. When you check in, ask the seater to be sure to that you are checked in properly.
Their bar drinks are weak on alcohol, but their tacos are well filled with meat.
We've been coming to Mijares for 30 years, and loved it from the first time we walked in. The food is great, prices are good, the atmosphere is comfortable and low-key, and the staff is always extremely friendly. This is our favorite restaurant in Pasadena.
Born and raised in the area, never knew this place was here. Sunday brunch was GREAT! Price was a tad higher than other places (saw online it was $24.95, bill showed $27.95) if the price were any higher, it would be a stretch, but the food is worth it, quality and choice was great as well, from tri tip to ribs, omelette and taco stations, AND let's not forget some of the best choices for desserts! I'll definitely be back. Only thing that would be awesome that I'm honestly unsure if they do or not, is email discounts. We frequent El torrito/Acapulco often for Sunday brunch and they offer us discounts often for brunch.
Aside from not offerings margaritas by the pitcher, I don't have too many complaints. The margaritas at $8.50 each are a little pricey. not sure there was much alcohol in them but perhaps that is for the best. We were a group of 7 getting together after many years of not seeing each other so we sat around and chatted for a very long time and the restaurant never made us feel rushed. Food is not particularly memorable but certainly good and hearty. It's been our go-to get together place for years as the location is convenient for many of us.
We have a new theater company in Pasadena, Parson's Nose. We've all been to Mijares before many times but not in a while. We were looking for a place where we could chat. It got a little noisy, but that was fine. The staff made way for us when we came in and cleared a table they were using which was very nice of them. Wasn't too crazy about the crab tostada I had, but I've had great meals in the past there and will order them again. We all had a fun dinner.
The restaurant was crowded when we were there. The service was pretty bad. The waiter forgot our order of appetizers. He also forgot to bring chips and salsa when we ran out and asked for more. He brought our food 40 minutes after we got there. He did apologize for the food taking so long.
We like Mijares. We will come back.
We ordered guacamole prepared table side, noticed they used lemon instead of lime. So I asked for limes instead of lemon and they told me they don't have limes. Are you kidding me - a Mexican restaurant has no limes? How do you make your margaritas? The server came back to check on us only once. We were out of water and drinks. Thank goodness for the bus person. He took better care of us than the server. The food was only mediocre. Probably won't go back again.
Loved our experience at Mijares however Open Table didn't advise it was for two important Birthdays. One for my mothers 75th birthday. I requested brunch but Open Table didn't pass that along or advise of a time cut off. This isn't the first time a special request is placed on OpenTable like where you choose a special request and the restaurant is oblivious and you feel like your special occasion doesn't matter to them. Its better to call restaurant direct is my future choice.
Just got back from a business trip, my fiancé and I just wanted to have a nice meal to celebrate one year of being engaged. After being seated we both feel exhausted, as we both have long work days behind us. We order waters and immediately the "table-side guacamole".
I could have settled for ONLY that, we were craving it. 15 minutes pass and still no sight of guacamole. We confirmed with the waiter and he forgot to mention to the lady who makes the guacamole. He is a little bit older so we were sympathetic.
What killed the evening was after he altered the guacamole lady, we could SEE her in the kitchen talking to someone... for another 10 minutes.
At this point I would rather have gone to the Taco Bell drive through trash can and eaten the wrappers. My fiancé tried to locate a manager and found no luck. We left right away. I'm a pretty patient person however this was pathetic. If she was busy with other patrons, that's understandable. Being in our line of sight completely on clock not doing your job is what ruined our night.
I want to return but I believe good food pairs well with good service. Not today.
I was really looking forward celebrating mother's day at this restaurant, but the service was very poor. The staff was not friendly at all. The hostess that supposed to take us to our table did not speak to us, left us in the middle of the patio, guessing which one was our table.....sad! because the food is good! but the service is bad.......then we went for some tacos, asked the lady if there was more green salsa and her reply was "I guess there is no more" wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (this was The Sunday brunch buffet)
Haven't been here since childhood.. Took my 90 year old Mom she loves it grew up in the area.. Had a reservation but had to wait for 2 more in the party so couldn't be seated hostess had a bit of an attitude.. Younger hostess very very sweet on Friday night but the other women, awful.. I wanted to leave but didn't want to disappointment my Mother as we were celebrating Mother's Day early because I have 9 other siblings! Everything else was good.. Mariachis were very nice..
Mijares is an "old Pasadena" destination! The restaurant is family owned and been part of the restaurant scene for decades! Food is predictable and usually good. Good for many different groupings---family, children, large group, visitors, outdoor seating, banquet room, etc.
The food and service were excellent. Even on crowded Cinco de Mayo. My only complaint is that last year they had a great mariachi band and this year 3 white shirt dudes with guitars who we only got to hear just before we were about to leave after dinner. They sounded good, but we wanted mariachi band.
We were there before the crowd came in but it took forever to place our order, and then it was very slow in coming. By then, the place was very crowded and very noisy. Had two handicapped people with us, and very difficult to get a wheelchair and a walker around to a table. One of the lunch items was very good, the rest was just OK to not good. Would not go back!
