Midtown Oyster Bar
Our two story building offer 2 bar areas, the first floor tavern and the second floor Burgee Bar. Located right on Thames Street, there is no better place in town to watch the hustle and bustle of downtown Newport. Our tavern area has high top tables for a casual, bar atmosphere, where you can gather with friends to enjoy a great meal, or a few beverages. Three dining rooms and two outside decks allow for plenty of dining space as well as the availability for private parties. Whether you are looking for casual snacks and cocktails with friends or a formal dining experience, Midtown Oyster Bar has everything you could possibly be looking for.
My favorite restaurant in all of RI. We’ve been here a couple times before and are never let down. The food is so unbelievably fresh and prepared to perfection. Also, if you enjoy oysters, the raw bar is the best around, especially with the in house citrus hot sauce. Midtown delivered an incredible meal and experience once again.
Fairly attentive staff on a Friday Accommodating of our needs. Had toddler. Strange lobster roll. Be sure to check.
Love this place for consistently good food quality
We had a wonderful Valentines Day dinner. The food was excellent, generous portions and nicely presented. A bit pricier than our usual meals out- but well worth it for a special occasion. We will be back!
Service, ambiance excellent! Swordfish delicious. Scallops a little sandy. Should have returned the meal and I am sure the server would have accommodated my wishes so my fault. I will go back to try other items from the amazing menu.
Everything was amazing. Best lobster roll.
Great evening!
Good food. Limited menu that night due to gas issues in Newport. We will definitely go back
We were in Newport during the gas line emergency this past weekend. The restaurant did everything to try to maintain business as usual. It was our first time in Newport and we had a memorable night. The Oyster Stew was delectable and set the tone for the rest of the evening. If this is how top notch your service and food are during an emergency, I can only imagine how magnificent it must be when you’re running at full sail. Thank you for a magical night!
Two delicious seafood dishes (I had the cod chowder and Cajun scallops) and a tasty draft local beer (Rhode Trip) for less than I’d have to pay at a characterless mid-level chain. Prompt and friendly service. A nice place to hang out. They managed brilliantly in the Jan 2019 gas outage—even calling me after I made an online reservation to be forthcoming about their menu limitations due to that outage. I’d recommend to friends. Will return next time I’m in Newport.
Football game was on - made for a noisy atmosphere.
We celebrated my husband's 50th Birthday with a private lunch on the third floor of Midtown last May, so when we were looking for a winter date night spot, we thought it would be fun to return... the restaurant was SO cozy and warm, the food was delicious (!!) the service was excellent and so friendly. Turns out we love Midtown no matter the season or reason!
Second time my wife and I went to mid-town and we got more of what we remember. Quaint atmosphere and excellent seafood. Bring lunchtime we were pleased to see some really good selections and ordered a bunch of things to try. Fired littlenecks, Tuna poke and tuna teppanyaki. For dinner we had Chile lime mussels and a grilled seafood Cesar all incredible. Their bread is soo good as well. Great place to eat at, worth the drive from CT.
Always an enjoyable outing. Food, service, decor are all very nice and good value for the price. Definitely a good spot.
Honestly very disappointed. The restaurant itself is very pretty and has potential. The server took about 15 minutes to come over and another 15 to bring a single drink. The worst part of the night was the food though. The wedge salad was a piece of leaf lettuce drenched in dressing. The lobster roll was dry and horrible. Honestly the worst salad and the worst lobster roll I’ve ever had, which for Newport, is very disappointing.
Wonderfully beautiful restaurant with great service and good!
We go to Midtown at least once every time we visit Newport. We have been for lunch , dinner, and just for drinks and apps. The fried oysters are our favorite, and they will make them for you even if they’re not on the menu! Love the tuna tartare tacos, great seafood, and raw bar. Our waitress , Claudia, was amazing . She was extremely personable and fun and incredibly knowledgeable and helpful!
The food was so great and the service was even better! Definitely on the pricey side so not somewhere I would go to eat all the time but perfect for special occasions or a date night!
Expected better service and food.
Lobster roll was basically only dry claws with no seasoning on a buttered roll.
Servers didn’t know how to clear plates or serve on
Correct side
Wine list was good and well priced but all else was sloppy and expected more based on reviews
Tasty food. The first floor is more energetic and lively. The second floor has a 30 foot ceiling and is more laid back. The sea scallops were very fresh and expertly done.
Spent the entire meal at the back raw bar and was not disappointed. The food amazing, the knowledge of the staff regarding local seafood was fantastic and the quality of the meal amazing. If you have a large group this place can cover it. If you want a quite casual night, it’s perfect as well. Do not pass up with place when in Newport, you will not be disappointed.
Good. Solid seafood with diverse options. Everything arrived quickly and tasted great, but nothing was particularly memorable or outstanding. With that said, would return with another group.
Always a treat to sit at the upstairs bar and enjoy great food and libations!
Ordered a bottle of Jordan Cab and a few appetizers before dinner. Wine never came until we were done with our appetizers. Apparently they were out of it.? Ordered a substitute bottle, yet the Jordan Cab was on the receipt when the check showed up. We decided to leave and go to The Mooring for dinner. It was delicious and tremendous service
Went here for lunch a couple times now and have been very happy with the service and the food. I live an hour away and find it worth the drive to have a nice relaxing lunch and the oysters are fabulous!!
A girl friends’ reunion lunch. The Seafood soup in a tomato base was excellent, as was my bacon cheeseburger.
Tea and coffee was just lukewarm though, but our server replaced the tea beverages with piping hot ones.
Nice place to catch up! Prices a little on high side for a burger ($15), and was never asked if I wanted any lettuce & tomato ( I did).
Awesome! Dinner was delicious, great appetizers and specials. A must!
We arrived a little early and sat at the bar on the second floor. We enjoyed the bar seating and the atmosphere so much that we stayed at the bar. We had a dozen fantastic local oysters and several small plates of other great creations. I will be back.
Overall, we had a great experience. Our server was very pleasant but would not check on us for extended periods of time. It seemed like other wait staff were more attentive than she was. The food came out very quickly but the drinks took awhile. I prefer eating upstairs but the downstairs vibe is quaint and more cozy.
Shrimp tacos were delicious. My salmon was a little undercooked.
It was very nice. A little pricey but not for Newport, RI
Anniversary dinner and complimentary champagne came to the table. Bar manager (woman) was nice to do that!
Loved the atmosphere and the location in the heart of Newport. Great options on the menu. Food was all very good....my tuna poke was surprisingly small for an entree. Plenty of tuna but minimal rice...why not add more rice and make it a heartier meal with a better presentation? Only complaint was the service was very slow even though it was very quiet there when we were there. Other table seated at the same time we were already had wine and food delivered to table before we were able to order. Took a lot longer to get through lunch than it should have.
Very good - nice restaurant- friendly vibe
Paul was our waiter and he was very attentive and friendly. Makes the experience so much better when the wait staff truly cares. Thanks Paul.
We were there for dinner a party of 5 and there was something for everyone . All thought their meals were very good and the price was very reasonable. The ambiance was great and it’s located where all the happenings are so easy to walk to see a band or get a cocktail after dinner .
Food was good service slow
We were there for a business dinner. Great food and great atmosphere!
Excellent service and food!
Fine but nothing special. A lot of the oysters were gritty and not shucked well. Lobster roll unexciting. Fun stmoaphere at the bar but better restaurants in town
