Michel's at the Colony Surf Ratings and Reviews
I was disappointed. My family (5 total) had gone to Michel's in December, and although the dinner took a long time, I felt taken care of and the quality of food was high. This time there were only 3 of us, and I felt that little care was given to us or our food. Although initial drinks were promptly brought, everything else lagged. This restaurant has several table side prepared dishes, including appetizers, entrees and desserts. A very long time elapsed between ordering, and them bringing out our appetizers, which included a table side preparation of lobster bisque. As our waiter was wheeling over our appetizers, another table was wheeled over from a different direction and included our entrees. For entrees we had ordered a seafood dish, plus 2 wagyu beef dishes, and I just KNEW they weren't going to refire them, and unfortunately I was right. The appetizers were good, but when I came back from the restroom our entrees were on the table, and they looked sad. For entrees that cost nearly $60 each, it really was unacceptable, but we had already been there for 2 hours, and didn't want to wait anymore, so we didn't complain. The wagyu actually held up pretty well and was still tender and delicious. My seafood entree was pretty horrible. I actually spit parts of it out. Then we were excited for the table side cherries jubilee which was our favorite from December's dinner. And it was amazing. Truly beautiful the way they make it. But it took nearly 1 hour from the conclusion of our entree to get to the dessert.
Wonderful ambience and the service was spectacular! The dishes we ordered were prepared table side, which is hard to find done in restaurants anymore. Wonderful menu items, superbly prepared. Even with multiple large groups in the restaurant, the staff made you feel like you were the most important and the service didn’t suffer at all. Highly recommend!
Our reservation was made two months ago through open table. I ask for a window which we got. It was my wife’s birthday and I ask for them to make it special. No acknowledgment at all. Service was just ok. We have to this restaurant 4 other times and was delighted. Food was subpar. I was really disappointed.
It was a wonderful experience. The view of the ocean and sunset was very romantic and mesmerizing. We were seated right away at a table for four. This was ideal as it was only the two of us. The staff were very friendly and engaging all the while allowing us to dine in peace. Food was exceptional. We had the ocean bounty and the 12 ounce New York blue rare. Excellent. We had a memorable experience. Will definitely go back again.
We had all tableside dishes. The prep was great and extremely non-intrusive. Presentation superb and food tasted exactly as it should. Steak Diane & Fish Cioppine. Lobster Bisque for two. Wish i could go back next weekend too. Jason (waiter) extremely knowledgeable. friendly, professional and attentive. Never a bad moment the entire 1 3/4 hours. LOVE IT.
This was my first time at Michel's and it will be a night to remember! The whole experience was amazing from start to finish from the wait staff, to our waiter of the night David, drinks, food and most of all ambiance! Our food was so delicious and the scenery did not disappoint! I'm so happy I got to spend my boyfriend's birthday here!
All the appetizers and food was delicious except for the fresh fish preparation that came out in a parchment paper. The free appetizer and amuse bouche was delicious and a added a great touch to the meal. We had a visiting guest from California and he thoroughly enjoyed the sunset even if we were unable to get a table on the perimeter as requested when the reservation was made. He had to go between the tables and excuse himself to take a few pictures.
In an era where there are many great small restaurants in Kakaako or China town offering novel or reinterpreted cuisine, there’s a value to a classic restaurant that is practically an island landmark with fine dining and a twist of “island flair”. It’s been years since we were last at Michel's but decided that a lovely birthday dinner would be the occasion. As always, the location is beautiful and the view exceptional.
Unfortunately, the food wasn’t a match for the reputation. We ordered the Chef's menu and wine pairing for two. The first course was a mushroom chowder that was delivered tepid. Some longtime customers came in, and our service started to get further and further apart. The 2nd course was a Kozen sweet corn risotto served lukewarm and with large amounts of corn kernels. --Not what we expected from "French haute cuisine”.
The duck salad course was at least supposed to be served chilled. The Kauai Prawn had a taste of curry along with coconut, but was again only adequate. Likewise with the wine, most were unexceptional except for the Spanish garnacha which was a very good 2oz.
The lamb chop was delicious, with a goat cheese and demi-glace. This is what we were hoping for! Unfortunately for us, it was followed by dessert and the meal was over. Our server could sense our disappointment and with the experience and apologetically told us that the feedback for the Chef’s menu hadn’t been very enthusiastic.
In the future, I would like to give Michel's another try. The a la carte menu looked like a better choice. I wouldn't recommend the Chef's menu to anyone. Here’s to hoping that they change it soon. 2/5 Stars.
We will reminisce this Birthday dinner for many years to come. Service was impeccable. The food was undeniably The best we have had in a long time. Watching the sunset and the moon rise, Glistening on the water, was a real treat that we could not have planned better.
Michele's was wonderful yet again. A wonderful wedding anniversary dinner. We were though pretty disappointed that we didn't get a window table. I had made our reservation almost two months earlier and had made the request. David N was a great waiter. Did apologize for not being able to get our request. But did give us his card for our next visit.
