Great food and fun staff! We had a delicious lunch!
This was an average dinning experience across the board. We did not attend brunch but the brunch menu was extensive. Wish the dinner men had as many choices. That was one of the issues as my boyfriend is a vegetarian and there were few choices. This wasn't a bad restaurant.........is just wasn't a good one. I may try the Sunday brunch. The French onion soup was good but $12.00? I also had a salmon cake which I thought was very good but a little salty. Wait staff was friendly but became over whelmed when it became busy and ended up offering us a free dessert after service came to a halt.
Bill came to $144.00 we had 1 dinner salad, 2 bowls of soup, 2appetizer and 2 glasses of wine and one martini.
We were seated upstairs between a table of 12 and a table of 6. Very noisy.
We ordered some small plate dishes assuming a tapas dish but they were full sized meals. Food was good but servings way too large to be called small plates.
Our party of 6 all enjoyed their selections. The crepe of the day made with fresh peaches was a hit as well as the Belgian waffle of the day with blueberries. My husband was adventurous with his Eggs Benedict with pork belly (many other Eggs Benedict choices) but he really liked it. I absolutely loved my duck confit crepe with wild mushroom sauce and a wonderful drink, not on the menu, called the Bombosa for those who like a potent mimosa! Our server, Lindsay, was fantastic!!
This was our first time at Michelle's, but not our last. The atmosphere is very French bistro and the food is superb!. The best onion soup I've ever had! Lindsay, our server, was friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Overall, a great restaurant.
We have reserved Michelle's a few times in the past for special occasions. It is a fabulous location and the offerings sophisticated without being extremely costly.
This last Brunch was the only time we were at all disappointed in the food, in that the hash browns on my husband's dish were a paltry serving and sour in taste, as if they were preserved too long and should have been discarded. Also, he had a few salad greens that were deliquescing ~ a big turn-off for him.
Again, I note that these are our first and only negative issues at this venue, and I think we shall return!
Absolutely a fantastic brunch with the wife! The menu was apetizing from the words on the page up and through fork to mouth. The crepes were succulent and savory, french toast was flavorful, and the Shrimp & Grits were simply amazing! Can't wait to go back!
We were on a mission to find a unique brunch location on a Friday....and we happened upon Michelle's....a VERY fortunate discovery! Our brunch entrees were SO delicious and not the usual breakfast fare. Try the Wild mushroom and Truffle Scramble, or the Eggs Benedict with fried pork belly and potatoes cooked in duck fat. DELISH. We were impressed with the perfectly garnished and tasty Bloody Marys too. Michelle herself was our server....very candid and laid back, her goal being our happiness and satisfaction. Bottom line: We were QUITE satisfied :)
Michelle's is always a wonderful place to eat at, particularly for brunch. The seating is a bit close, but that's just part of the atmosphere! The menu is full of delicious things (their bacon is perfection, the cheesy grits are my favorite, and oh, those fresh berry crepes...). I recommend Michelle's to anyone who wants a nice, not-too-pricey (not cheap, either) meal out. I also recommend you make reservations, particularly for brunch, since they fill up fast.
This little cozy spot is everything you could want for a relaxing night out! Perfect for a date or dinner with friends! The food and wine is of city calabor while still staying comfortable and approachable. Plus...the service is incredible!!!!!!!
My wife and I dine out fairly regularly and have done so in Portsmouth for over twenty years. This may be our favorite regular haunt in Po-town. For whatever reason, this was the first time we made it for their brunch. Amazing, broad scope of offerings and the food did not disappoint! I would stack the quality, freshness and culinary interest of the menu items up against any area restaurant, in any price range. Many tourists head straight for the river side restaurants, and can't really blame folks for being attracted to water views, but they are sadly over paying for lesser cuisine while we enjoyed a second story window table for two looking right down on the crowds strolling through the very heart of the historic town. The kitchen is open to visitors on the first floor and ownership is nearly always present. Can't beat this place!
We love this restaurant and were not disappointed again. A special Holiday menu did not disappoint. The beef lovers ate every bit of the bourdelaise, the duck was wonderful and the sole light and tasty. They have a great wine list, and though we have yet to try the desserts, they sound wonderful. Great restaurant and definitely recommend
We go to Michelle's often because of food and the friendly staff. Our server remembered us from last time - even details of our conversation. The food was excellent. When they found out we had to get to the airport, the service was very quick.
Excellent brunch...it exceeded all of our expectations! Varied menu offered a host of choices.... I highly recommend to foodies of all kinds!
We enjoyed our Christmas Eve dinner so much! We were a little disappointed to find a pre fixe menu upon arrival...but everything was delicious. Portions were almost too big! We look forward to our return and an opportunity to try the regular menu. The service was wonderful! Lindsey made the meal more fun and exciting. The amazing thing about her...she was the only server in the house!!!!
My mom turned 90 and so we chose to have her birthday brunch at Michelle's and boy, was that the right choice. They basically set us up in our own room ( she did have to climb stairs) and we sampled as much as we could on the brunch menu after celebrating with a Michelle's Crush cocktail. The conversation ended up muffled for a while because all one could hear were accolades, as forkfulls of scrambled eggs and cured salmon, lobster salad, french toast, seafood linguine and monte cristo sandwiches were passed around and sampled. Despite the plethora of absolutely yummy French Toast my mom FINISHED off her plate she was so delighted with it. Though understaffed, Lindsay, our server, was both fun and attentive and did a great job of making us feel special. I would recommend this for brunch to anyone but apparently, everyone knows about this extraoridinary place already as it was jammed downstairs with "wannabe's" so get a reservation!
Scott (Owner/chef) is terrific. Always, remembers our names.
We actually grew up in the same North Shore town but had never met till visiting Michelle's. Wonderful place, multiple floors, very warm and welcoming. The feeling of each floor is different and truly lovely...like someone's home. Each time we've eaten we've requested top floor seating (esp at the bar!) and we've been fortunate the last two times to have Taylor, the magnificent mixologist, firing up the libations! I always have the lobster eggs benny...incredible! My partner had steak and eggs with goat cheese and herbs...fabulous.
Tremendous food and a great experience!!
Michelle's on Market in Portsmouth, NH is a family run bistro where you can feel the love. From the warm, welcoming and accommodating staff to the exquisitely prepared food, everything was just perfect. Our party included six adults and one well-behaved infant. We all agreed that the food, to a plate, was exceptional. Scrambled eggs with black truffles, salmon BLTs, salads, French toast and crepes were all so delicious that no one was willing to share. We remained at our table for quite a while feeling catered to and un-rushed. We are looking forward to a return visit to sample other parts of the menu. The description of the scallops on the dinner menu made my mouth water.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and ambiance of this place. My entree, the Provencal seafood was outstanding! My husband said his entree, the pork special dish, was also outstanding. Service was very good, although I would not call it "attentive". The onion soup was a disappointment for me, as it was very thick, very peppery and had far more onion in it than I like. My husband loved his very unique appetizer - the wild mushroom with poached egg on a bagette. Flour-less chocolate cake was delicious!
I went to Michelle's for a girls night out dinner during restaurant week. Typically, the restaurant week specials only allow you to choose from a limited menu, but Michelle's did their entire mune. It was a great value. Each of us got something different and there are still things to go back and try. Lots of yummy and creative choices. The desserts were all from scratch and amazing, go for the cheesecake!
We had the cassoulet, which was rather dry and topped with too many croutons. The room was very loud, which made it hard to carry on a conversation. Glasses of wine were overpriced, ranging from $ 11/glass to $ 14/glass. We mentioned this to the server, who stated that they do a 8 oz. pour, which turned out not to be the case.
The service was efficient, friendly and unobtrusive. The food was well prepared, presented and tasted great. Enjoyed the evening out.
Great service! It was a bday brunch and we were taken care of with a champagne toast and a very pleasant server! The menu was fun and diversified!
Must go....It was terrific. Best onion soup I ever had. Great roasted chicken and Beef bordeux was amazing.
Visited during Restaurant Week, so it was very busy. But, the 4 of us all had great service and great food. All apps and meals were tasty. But the Salmon and lamb/wild boar meals were especially flavorful. We thought because of rest. week the meals might be smaller than normal, but not the case. Hope to get back soon.
We had an amazing dinner at Michelle's for restaurant week. We could select our course on their regular menu and found the food to be oth delicious and plentiful. The sirloin, pork and scallop dishes were are worth returning.
Warm and welcoming place for brunch on a rainy/snowy Sunday! Everyone in our party of 8 enjoyed their brunch selections which ranged from eggs benedict to seafood crepes and roasted vegetables. Felt like we were in our own cozy room with leather club chairs and couches grouped together. Seafood crepes were generously overflowing with scallops, shrimp and lobster and an excellent sauce. We'll be back soon!
Went for Sunday Brunch. Coffee served from caraffes was luke warm, even on second cup. Food was good not great. Service was slow and not attentive, overall not good enough to go back.
Went to Brunch at Michelle's twice and each time was wonderful. Took the kids also and they enjoyed. Love the omelet where you can choose any or all ingredients inside. Only place I have ever seen where you can take all of the options and ask for others.
Will be back often when visiting my daughter at UNH.
Such a charming place! Feels like you are dining in someone's home with all the unique seating and cozy feel. The food was amazing!!! Great service too!
In a state not known for good city dining, Michelle's gives you a good reason to visit Portsmouth. This was our second trip to this city this year and this time we went for diner and brunch during the course of a long weekend in the town. The food is based on some very good European foundations but has imagination and flair. The busy kitchen turns out some great dishes that will feature local fish and seafood, plus meats and pastas. The historic building and upper level views of the market square only add to the experience. It's a family business and it shows in the dedication of the staff and the warmth of their welcome. Service is steady and attentive, but not rushed - we like that. We'll be back.
most enjoyable gastronomically and in variety of menu itself. we had dinner this time but have had superb brunches twice before.
Brunch on a Sunday in Market Square. Food was good, but nothing that would knock your socks off. With the exception of the OJ. Really good fresh squeezed!
I am not a picky person by any means and I appreciate how hard people in the food service work. With that said I was so disappointed with my experience at this place. Staff was very friendly but over worked. Our waiter said he had been there since 8am and it was not 8:30pm. Perhaps that is why the service was awful. It took 20 minutes for us to get our drinks. And it took an hour to get our food which then came out incorrect- one person in our party was given the wrong dish. The food was ok- some of our dishes were dry. There was never a water refill or checking in on us and it was quite pricey. Never even asked us if we wanted dessert or coffee- think he knew it was not the best seating?
The atmosphere was unbelievable with the food very good with large portions. The service was good with the waiter giving us the required attention.
The food is excellent. We dine in the bar area and his wine recommendations are right on. Love this place!
Second time this has happened to me. Make reservation and I get there and there are no tables and they scram to put something together -like having you sit in lounge chairs using a side table as your dining table. Service is bad -really bad. Always forgotten and this time, my plate was taken away before I was done eating and my drink order was wrong but since it took 20 mins to get a drink, I didn't bother saying anything in fear of going thirsty the entire meal.
Bloody Mary was not the best...seemed to be lacking some spiciness and came with no celery or pickle- just one green olive and a lime. The Eggs Benedict was amazing and were cooked just right. Prices were very fair considering the quality of the food. Duck fat roasted potatoes were to die for! Other menu items also looked terrific and everybody in our party enjoyed their food. Staff was very friendly. We sat in a cute little lounge area with couches that fit our entire party quite well while we ate.
We had booked for dinner but couldn't make it and went the next day for lunch instead. Had a fantastic lobster brie salad and an outstanding Italian Pino Griggio. Our first time to Portsmouth and to Michelle's on Market Square. We'd recommend it and we will go back on a future visit.
We made a reservation at Michelle's based on other reviews and were not disappointed. It is a wonderful, charming, warm, friendly place to dine. Chris at the bar is adorable and very knowledgeable about food, wines and spirits. Zack is chef extrodinaire. We sat in the small bar on the 3rd floor and enjoyed all the action down in Marketplace Square. Would go back again -- would like to experience on a cozy winter day and sit in one of the smaller cozier dining areas.
