Michael Smith Ratings and Reviews
Michael Smith's is one of the very few really great Kansas City restaurants. I wasn't able to spend as much as I would have liked this time (I stuck to soup and salad), but the food is beautiful, creative, extraordinary. One of the soups I've had there revolutionized my cooking at home--one of the nice things about Michael Smith's is that if you ask questions, people will find out for you what that spice is, how this or that was done. Michael Smith also greets his guests frequently and you get a chance to ask him questions, too. I've been looking for a new restaurant since The American closed, and of course, Michael Smith spent seven years there himself. He keeps those standards today as well.
Michael Smith's restaurant in its 10th year is in a renaissance as they convert to their Italian themed "Finding Guido" menu. New, delicious appetizers and entre items on the menu share space with amazingly redefined classic entrees to make one of the most interesting and consistent menus available in the KC food space. The food was great, the service was equal. The room is a pleasure. In KC, there isn't a better or more consistent fine dining experience.
We ended up here finally, after having talked about it for a couple of years, for a family birthday party. It was a hit with both the young adults and we of a certain age. Right off, I was pleasantly surprised by a nice wine list with reasonable prices on good wines. The food was outstanding. Because of the basic freight, the crowd was less hipster than I had expected but still diverse within its cohort. The hipsters appeared to be next door at a bar. Anyway, we liked the restaurant and intend to go back for another special occasion.
Recent change to focus in Italian cuisine was a terrific change for an already great restaurant!
The two us shared an order of foie gras - nice piece of foie gras, served with cherry sauce, cherries & figs - xlnt. We then shared an order of crab ravioli w/ shitake mushrooms, also superb.
Then shared an order of cioppino, also xlnt
KC has lacked a quality Italian restaurant for many years. This could be it!
The food here is creative and excellent. My group of six all raved about it. The service was great and the chef, very personable, came out to chat when we were seated. This is the best meal I have had in a long time and I try a lot of restaurants in Chicago. Highly recommend!
We were celebrating my 30th birthday and we each had the 5 course tasting menu. The food was good and Chef Smith came out to greet us throughout the meal. I enjoyed the variety of foods we tasted, my boyfriend and I swapped plates on couple of courses to try each others food. It was a good experience.
Michael Smith is one of Kanas City's shining culinary gems. James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Smith is passionate about well-executed, authentic Modern Italian cuisine, including divine handcrafted pasta made fresh daily in the Michael Smith kitchen. Every detail is attended to in the MS experience, thanks to Chef Smith and his wife, co-owner/general manager and wine director Nancy Smith: Service, ambience, superb award-winning wine list and food. Located in the vibrant Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City (and conveniently on the KC Streetcar line), the restaurant is an urban treasure that attracts not only residents on both sides of the state line, but also visiting celebrities, politicians and VIPs. But Michael Smith is NOT just a special occasion restaurant (although it's lovely to celebrate any birthday, anniversary or other life milestone here)—it's a place to be savored Tuesday - Saturday.
There were three of us dining. We each did the 5 course tasting menu...but what was very special and fun was that each of us received a different course for each course (i.e., different salads, fish courses, etc.) so since we don't mind sharing (or a least a bite or two) over the course of the evening we tried 15 different items (some of which were on the regular menu and some of which were not)
Was expecting a more grand, modern space. The floors are uneven causing our table to tip. Basic decor, seemed a bit run down. The food was great up to their fish options. I tried both the mahi & sea bass which were underseasoned & overcooked. The rabbit gnocchi & beet salad were sensational! Service was good & they comped our fish entree & a round of drinks. I think we'll be back to give it a second chance.
Went there for my special evening. To propose to my girlfriend. The staff was more than accommodating. They set us at a great table and even helped with the surprise. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. They went over and above. Michael and Nancy Smith even congratulated us on our engagement.
Impeccable service, friendly and knowledgeable staff and delicious food and drinks. Michael Smith, the chef, talked with everyone in the restaurant the night we were there. He's personable and has a great menu that is changing completely in a month. Can't wait to try his new menu! Great night out!
Hyperbole might be too easy to describe this restaurant experience. Yet three days later, my opinion has not hasn't faltered: it is sublime. The atmosphere creates a casual elegance that is beautiful and also very comfortable. Cuisine, from innovative pairings to perfectly prepared dishes, delights the senses. And completing the trinity of great restaurants, the service is warm, friendly and attentive without obtrusiveness. In fact, on this particular visit, Angie remembered the aperitif I ordered a month ago, was happy to split dishes, suggested wine parings, always happily accommodating small requests. I will return again and again!
My dining experience here never disappoints. This is our 5th time to the restaurant and we enjoy it a little more each time. Highly recommend trying something new each time since there's always something seasonal on the menu. Always save room for dessert too. Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Easily our favorite restaurant in the city.
