We had heard great things about Michael Smith but were disappointed. Our server was fine, but not great, and one of our sides was forgotten. The complimentary small meatball to try was cold, and our entrees looked pretty and tasted ok, but we were expecting bold flavors and really tasty food. Bummer!
Overall our experience was good, until one of us received our entree. It was over cooked and our server failed to check back after the plate had been placed. If she had, we may have been able to enjoy our meals together. That said she did check and immediately removed the plate and offered another serving. We had an engagement to attend, time was short so a salad was selected, which was served and proved delicious. Our meal was comped which was appropriate. We may or may not return.
My husband and I had dinner here for our anniversary and were very pleased with what we ordered. Chef Michael also came by our table to see how we enjoyed our meals, which showed his dedication to his diners and their experience. This restaurant is perfect for those who enjoy a nice night out and want to have quality made to order food. I highly recommend it. We will definitely come back.
Wonderful meal with friends, excellent service, delicious food.
It was the best meal I have had in a long while. I got the sweet potato agnolotti in sage and brown butter as an appetizer and the scallops with a lovely pea purée as my entree. Wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon as well. Honestly everything was perfect! And our server couldn’t have been better! I noted in my reservation that I had a garlic allergy. So when I arrived she had a list of menu items that were safe for me to eat after consulting with the chef prior to my arrival. THAT’S service. Thank you all for a great 21st anniversary dinner!
We were there on a quiet night (four tables in use) and I felt service was a little slow for that number of tables, but not a big issue. Food was very good and very nice presentation.
When I made my reservation thru Open Tables I was asked if this was a special occasion and replied Birthday. Not sure why this was asked as it was not acknowledged by the restaurant. There was no need to acknowledge but why the question? Overall a nice dinning experience with very good food.
Customer service is excellent and the food is top quality and some of the best I’ve ever tasted. I highly recommend this place, it’s worth every penny!
The friendly and attentive service was outstanding and made us feel so special. Would definitely return.
We haven’t been since it switched to an Italian concept and it was amazing. The appetizers were fantastic and all of the pasta we tried were excellent. Highly recommend! And our server, Sean, was awesome!! We will ask for him again!!!
It was a wonderful experience. Food and service were top notch!
Simply the best
Everything good/great, except noise from extra virgin. You know the person that laughs loud...and annoyingly? Yep. Whole time while we were there on the other side.
We were so impressed with how great the food was! Everyone's meal was creative and delicious. Service was excellent. Wine list is terrific. Great experience.
Fine dining and great service, highly recommend for business or romantic dinner
Fantastic. The Veal chops and the Pork roast were delicious! The Octopus appetizer and the Rabbit Gnochi were as billed (best Apps we’ve partaken. Service was as good as it ever gets! Great dining experience!
Always a delicious and exciting experience
Great experience! The staff was great - everything recommended from wine to dessert was spot on. It was great to see Michael Smith visiting with people and working right along with his staff. Love the option of having a smaller portion of pasta. We will be back!!!
Never had a bad meal here! Had the 5 course pasta tasting and I was happily full. Can't wait to go back soon!
Food Ok, expecting more fish options, more vegetables, but good. Window seat cold. Good wine selection.
Michael Smith has a fun and sophisticated atmosphere with delicious and creative food and a great wait staff, especially Shawn, who was both fun and professional. The conversation flowed as smoothly as the crisp white wine! Great date night restaurant!
Always a perfect menu. Probably the very best cuisine in Kansas City. Creative, Elegant, and always Delicious. Excellent wine list to accompany any course.
Absolutely amazing food! My palate was pleased and the service was phenomenal. Would love to visit again when we return to KC.
The staff, and the food was phenomenal! Michael came by personally to check on our experience. He made his way to every table.
I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone.
The most amazing dinner I had in years! Thank you for a great experience
I was not impressed with the menu. I felt there were more flavors added in the food than there was the food itself. we tried several items from the menu and would not order any of them again.
Our experience at Michael Smith was exquisite! Exactly the fine dining experience we were looking for. Haven’t found another state-side restaurant that serves iberico ham! Having Michael and Nancy so accessible made our evening very personal. Delightful.
A very nice dinner on the evening before Valentine's Day. Food was very good, we both had the eight hour pork roast .
It's a quiet and sophisticated reasturant, enjoyed the experience!
Food was overpriced for the quality and quantity. We have eaten in Michelin starred places for less.
On a brighter note, the rabbit gnocchi was extremely tasty and the hands down favorite of our party.
Service was stellar, as well was wine/drinks selection.
Love eating here! It is our go to for special occasions and just a great time out. Only thing we dislike about the whole experience is the long booth seating. The booth is kind of tall for short people. Otherwise perfect!
visited for a pre-symphony dinner date. we knew the food would be delicious, but we were absolutely blown away by how yummy everything was. the prosciutto di parma, rabbit gnocchi, and chicken piccata were supreme. our server Ashley was helpful guiding us through both the wine list and the menu. she was nice and attentive without being overbearing. we truly enjoyed ourselves and look forward to our next visit!
Sean was superb! All of his recommendations were spot on. Saffron crab pasta is a must. Filet and scallops were fantastic. Atmosphere is fun inviting and refreshing. Lighting is perfect.
These may seem inconsequential but for the perfect romantic date night, its a must.
Ask for SEAN for the perfect evening.
Food was outstanding. This was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. I went to compliment the chef and learned that he and Nancy were out of town. The restaurant didn't miss a beat.
Food is always outstanding. Great wine selections as well as attentive, knowledgeable service.
Our server, Jessie, was so nice and the food was amazing. You definitely get what you pay for.
Was a great atmosphere and it was a great experience dinning at the restaurant at this level... the taste menu with wine pairing was a journey I will travel again!!
What a beautiful evening! Food was outstanding, staff were pleasant and not pretentious, and I'm not gonna lie - it was pretty cool to get to shake Michael Smith's hand. Culinary rockstar!
Outstanding food and service
The constant creativity and combination of flavors combined with outstanding service keeps us coming back regularly
I wanted a quiet charming evening so I made a reservation on a Wednesday night. I only went to PUBLIC school but I KNOW most people go out on the weekend so if I don't want to be in a busy restaurant I shouldn't make a reservation during a time most people go OUT! THAT way I'm not mad. No one writes a dumb review about a restaurant being "too noisy" or being "overly crowded". I was AWARE of my needs and met them MYSELF like an adult. Going on.... everything was elegant and blissful. Food is inherently human. Machines are precise and robotically accurate. So when HUMANS participate in HUMAN activities one should constantly strive to understand the essence of HUMANity. The host was pleasant. The server (yes people don't say "waiter", "stewardess" or "dialup" anymore) was pleasant so WE out of natural reaction to a kind person were ALSO pleasant. We decided beforehand to indulge in the 6 course tasting. The SERVER was attentive and inquired about any dietary needs which was not applicable since the SERVER isn't a DOCTOR. Forgive me, I tend to say "the" server because no one is "mine". THEY are their own person. "My" server, "my" drink, "MY" meal... THAT meal is the artful sum of a complex and symphonic equation interwoven with ideas, schedules, passions and responsibilities comprised of farmers, culinary educators, architects, immigrants, dreamers, angry people who didn't want to get up at 4 a.m. and make deliveries! What COULD follow would most likely sound like a review inspired my various food writing Google searches. You've read that. Flowery descriptions of silken reductions, notes of pencil shavings, and terms such as "eats like". As in... this review reads like a marginalized servers manifesto. Thats because it is. Life's short. Don't be a jerkface.
I think Michael Smith restaurant is one of the 2 best restaurants in town. The food is innovative and well-prepared and the portions are reasonable. I love dining here because it's such a treat to read the menu and to hear what the servers recommend, and then to find that the dishes are every bit as good as they promised.
We were early and enjoyed a pre-dinner glass of wine at the bar in Extra Virgin. We were seated early and received service immediately. We all chose from the Restaurant Week menu. The rigatoni alla Amatriciana was outstanding! Our group tried all main courses. The chicken piccata was good. The 8-hour pork was delicious. Dessert of apple turnover was enjoyed. The sticky toffee pudding was okay, not really delicious. We would try this restaurant again. That it was in front of a streetcar stop was a bonus for ys.
