The whole experience was incredible. The famous lobster pot pie is one of the best things you will ever have. Service is truly exceptional. Pricey, but you can't complain when even the restroom smells like a spa inside.

This was my first time at Michael Mina. I was totally impressed with the ambiance and the great service. What took me over the top was the excellent presentation and flavors we all got from the wonderful dishes. The only problem was choosing what to eat within the five course menu! My son is a sous chef at a Michelin restaurant in SF and he has put this restaurant on the top of his list!

We spent NYE in SF which included our 2nd visit to the restaurant. The early seating included a 5 course tasting menu only, with optional wine pairing. The fluke terradito was fabulous, as well as the scallops, maine lobster and syrah wagyu short rib. Wine selections were paired very well except for the Syrah. They accommodated my request to replace the Syrah. Service was excellent and staff was very friendly.

SMALL DETAILS COUNT!
Prix Fixe meal was very good, beautifully presented and obviously carefully orchestrated in serve ware that was inspired by art. Clearly a large investment was made in serve ware (not votive on the table).
Service left some to be desired - One of the party could not have Lobster and told the wait staff that prior to dinner. She acknowledged that, saying she would consult with chef. She NEVER RETURNED to make an offering of an alternative course! Rather, just served a lentil dish while others received the lobster course.
The Washroom was not well attended -sinks were very dirty(not just wet) , backside of doors were worn and chipped and most shocking was the flower arrangements in the nooks were actually dead and crisp. White Peonies were shriveled, white Asiatic lilies brown on edges, I would've believed that for the New Year's eve service (not your ordinary night) Fresh flowers would have been presented. Our party was part of the first seating, can only imagine what happened later in the evening for $50 more.
There are many restaurants in the San Francisco area that present extraordinary food with attention to all the details that elevate the entire experience beyond good.
Might a Michelin reviewer have reneged on the star?

I started with tuna tartare. It was delicious! But the woman who served it was on the “not so pleasant “ side. My friend and I had the trout. Love the way it was prepared! The skin was crispy!
The rest of the staff we came in contact with were just wonderful! Very friendly!

Given the Michelin star, I may have set some expectations that led to some disappointment.
The Good:
- They definitely excelled at their bread and desserts.
- There were some good preliminary dishes like the chawanmushi , uni and some compliments from the chef. The flavor on the chawanmushi was spectacular. The shabu-shabu wagyu had a great presentation but the bitterness from the vegetables kind of overpowered the broth. The duck and foie had great flavor but the ducks was a little hard to slice and chew.
-Great wine selection and drinks.

The Bad:
- A server accidentally dropped which I thought was just bread behind me on my seat. I felt it for a second when it dropped and heard him get worried as he picked it up and moved away. I didn't say anything or look, as I didn't want to make a big deal out of it . A couple of minutes later, I move and placed my hand behind me and found that it wasn't just bread that dropped... I found butter and honey was on my seat and my clothes.. I got up and that's when a different server noticed me . He gave me a wet towel and switched my chair. He gave me a card to call if I needed dry cleaning.
- We did a 5 course meal. I paid additional for the otoro/tuna tartare dish. The toro slices were so chewy, I almost gagged. I've had otoro before and it wasn't like this. If this was my first experience eating otoro, I would've avoided it in the future.
- The 4th course. My wife had the sea bass, I had the beef. The plating of both did not make sense to us. It was basically half a fish and meat sliced in 3, partitioned on top of 3 different underlying ingredients and nothing really stood out flavor-wise. Just too much going on but not really.
- The bathroom... it needs some serious renovation as it was moldy in there.
- There were 4 of us and had almost a thousand dollar meal. I have to say, I've been to a few restaurants at this price range, one of them not even a Michelin star but the food and service was definitely better.

Absolutely wonderful dinner - we couldn't have asked for a better anniversary night. From the second we stepped in the door to the personalized attention at our table to the conclusion of the evening, there was not a single element that went unnoticed. The staff makes you feel like a million dollars. The food is top-notch and literally mouth-watering. Definitely worth the splurge for a night out!

The Christmas Eve menu was supposed to include goose but did not. This was not just another menu item for us but our main reason for going. We were expected to provide our credit card and confirm so shouldn't they have been expected to tell us, at least upon confirmation, that goose was no longer being offered. While there may not have been the intent to deceive, our complaint on this matter got us all of one glass of champagne and not a willingness to forgo the up-charge on two of the menu items. Nor was there an apology offered. Meanwhile the service was simply average for a restaurant of this caliber. The food was good but hardly stunning and there are many restaurants in San Francisco that can do as well for a much lower price.

We had the four course option. I do not eat seafood so my options were limited. One course had only seafood options, so they substituted an egg with foie gras -ok. Next a salad - mozzerala dish- not too tasty. next pasta- good, next main - steak- three 1 oz servings all place on a bed of sauce (3 different) - very good . Dessert-berry crisp - presented like a Napoleon - uninspired.
For all the hype, I have had many better meals at locally owned foodie restaurants in SF and Oakland , certainly less than $2,000.

I made reservations at MM for an office holiday lunch. I had been to MM one time many years ago when it was at the St Francis. I was disappointed w the service then as I was disappointed w the service this past time. There was a gentleman in our party who did not want feta on his kale salad but was when the salad came there was great still on the salad. When I am at a fine dining establishment I certainly do not expect such careless service like this. The food was mediocre for a restaurant that seems to think it deserves to be in this caliber. Those at the table all ordered the Lunch Tasting menu. The diner w the kale salad asked specifically to make an adjustment because he does not eat uncooked fish (tuna tar tar was the original offering w the tasting menu), hence the kale salad. The pork was very much over cooked, again, a restaurant at this level and price point should never over-cook a pork chop. All in all the food was not bad, but it was not great, and considering the price we were all left disappointed.

OMG this was by far the best dining experience I have ever had. After traveling Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and Hong Kong I can truly say that. I told my story to the hostess, the wait staff, and the captain. We were there on December 7 and that was the 10th anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. Very special day since we were celebrating the fact that I am still alive. They told Michael my story and he came out from private dining to meet me. That not only made my day, but it made my year! He was kind enough to pose for pictures. I will never forget his kindness and for taking the time to meet me.

Very good food, but portions are very small, and very pricey. Main waiter was outstanding, but dish serving was delegated to other waiters who inevitably could not remember dish allocation among people - a no-no given the high price point ($100 for lunch per person). nobody was around when we left to wish us a good day.

I almost asked the manager if this was a sports bar. When we walked in, there was a boisterous group of young men at the bar, which is open to the dining room. As we were seated, our waiter volunteered that the VERY LOUD group would be leaving soon. That did not occur for AT LEAST an hour. The manager should have taken an active role in controlling the situation I also recommend the restaurant seriously consider sectioning the bar off from the dining room. It ruined what we hoped would have been a quiet and relaxing dinner.
