Michael Mina – San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
OMG this was by far the best dining experience I have ever had. After traveling Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and Hong Kong I can truly say that. I told my story to the hostess, the wait staff, and the captain. We were there on December 7 and that was the 10th anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. Very special day since we were celebrating the fact that I am still alive. They told Michael my story and he came out from private dining to meet me. That not only made my day, but it made my year! He was kind enough to pose for pictures. I will never forget his kindness and for taking the time to meet me.
I almost asked the manager if this was a sports bar. When we walked in, there was a boisterous group of young men at the bar, which is open to the dining room. As we were seated, our waiter volunteered that the VERY LOUD group would be leaving soon. That did not occur for AT LEAST an hour. The manager should have taken an active role in controlling the situation I also recommend the restaurant seriously consider sectioning the bar off from the dining room. It ruined what we hoped would have been a quiet and relaxing dinner.
Nice space and ambience. Typical tasting menu-style format with "reserve" wine pairings. Caviar service was delicious. Most of the items in the tasting menu were underwhelming and uninspired. Wine pairings were fine, but nothing special, and not particularly "reserve" choices. Service was fine, but slightly overbearing (particularly the sommelier). We probably would have rated this a very good meal, but for the price and with the Michelin star we expected something far more special.
$800 for dinner for 2 with a wine pairing, I got the reserve wine pairing but since it took so long to get my first glass I ordered a Sirah that was on the cheaper pairing and it was better than the rest, the food was fine but nothing memorable. I wouldn't go back
Everything was very delicious except main course. I ordered duck breast and foi goie but duck breast was not as tender as I expected. My husband's main course was beef/filet mignon but beef wasn't tender either. We spent almost $600 and as a Michelin one star restaurant I expected main dishes should be good.
I am probably to critical. We are a party of for, tried almost the entire 5 course menu. The first and second course are excellent. But third and main entries were so so. With this price level, we expected more exciting food. But the last three courses including the desserts were about average. The main lobster pot pie is very skippable.. nothing special.
We arrived right at kitchen closing but they accepted us which was appreciated.
Oysters were very nice, Iberian jambon, so so, short rib very very tasty, lobster with tagliatelle: lobster delicious but pasta was gummy so considering the $45 price it didn’t pass muster.
Wine and wine service was excellent as usual, table service also excellent as usual.
Overall, if you can’t deliver 12:30 PM quality of preparation at 2:00 PM then close earlier.
My guest is from the UK, he told me that in London one wouldn’t survive if closed so early.
I plan to return to your restaurant nonetheless but will express my expectations.
The food was spectacular! Service was also top notch! The chocolate raspberry dessert was probably one of my all-time favorite desserts!
The only thing that would bring this to new heights would be a quieter atmosphere. I found it quite loud in the restaurant and sometimes difficult to have a quiet conversation.
Great quality & pretty food like always, just the weirdest & ridiculous array of 10+ servers & busboys & runners & captain & Manager & GM, not only a total circus but a uncomfortable one! No connection with guest/customer, we noticed many staff circling tables around perimeter as if SHARKS or fish in a massive Aquarium fish tank. Most never smiled or friendly, WAY too serious. Why wonder Mr. Minna's fancy RN-74 just closed, Bourbon steak gone & he's going casual BBQ next week. I think a self-serve or old-fashion 1 waiter & 1 bus-boy connecting staff would be better overall experience.
The food was outstanding and the service was fine but a little bit slow we had our 10 year old with us and the meal dragged on for 3 hours which was just a bit too long -however, as I said the food was excellent and the staff was lovely and very professional it just took a little bit too much time between courses
Nice ambience and great service. The wine was fantastic although at a price of $45 (+tip/tax/SFhealth=$60) per glass, it was not necessarily worth it. The chef tasting menu was good but I have had many better ones including some at this location a couple of years ago. I was quite full at the end but was left unsatistfied by what I ate. And then there was the bill...
Amazing service! And incredible food. Thank you for making my husband’s birthday extra special. We were let inside of the restaurant before they opened so we didn’t have to wait outside. The hostess walked us to a table next to the window and there was a hand written note in an envelope from the general manager which was such a sweet touch! The waiter explained every dish, all the specials. And his recommendations. Loved the experience and we definitely recommend it!
Outstanding food and wine list. Almost faultless. All food allergies catered for without fuss (unlike Baume which was particularly inflexible on this point) . Bar staff were good to start with although I had a fairly uninspiring Bloody Mary. When we were seated we were however jammed in against a column near the window which wasn't great. I felt oddly cut off and blocked from my partner against the column. Starters were superb. The lobster pie was delicious. The beef entrée was beautifully cooked, maybe missing some extra side of glazing as there was very little sauce on the plate. Full stars to the sommelier and the wine list. This was a delightful way to end my stay in San Francisco. The only major service fail during the nite was the sorbet arriving and then another staff member dumping the desserts on the table before we had even started the sorbet. The sommelier jumped in after we complained and gave us a free desert wine and whisked the desserts away which was much appreciated. Amazing fail though for a place like this. I am a big fan however of this restaurant despite this small glitch. Top notch and a must next time I am in town. PS: I had food envy when I saw the salmon/caviar starter - I should have had that in hindsight. Looked stunning!
The service was just adequate. The servers didn't explain the dishes well. For the main course, they just said it was "steak" with some lettuce?? Also, we all used the travelzoo voucher for lunch and this is partly my fault. I was in deep conversation with my friends and didn't request additional service. But my piece of steak (it was less than 1 oz) was the end piece and mostly tendon. I feel like they should have known not to serve that piece if it steak is less than 1 oz.
