Michael Mina – San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
We went for a business meal + celebration. The place has a grand entrance and beautiful from inside. The staff is friendly. The waiter was pleasant to talk to and he explained all the choices form the menu and what can be customized. We had champagne and red wine, it was pricey and delicious. Food was served in timely manner, it looked and tasted great. We also ordered vegetarian dishes from the starter(avocado and other veggies) and main course (pasta) and they were awesome. I'd definitely go there again.
Waited 10 min for waitress, didn't provide a menu or explain how lunch worked. Calamari and bread were cold. Waiter delivering the food was wrong about the ingredients in 2 separate dishes. Women's bathroom had concrete floors which smelled, paper towels thrown on the floor and no hood or place to set your handbag so it was the floor! Not 5 star. Wine list outrageously priced. The food was quite good, but not great.
The menu sounded fantastic, but the experience was rather frustrating. Truffles without taste. Unbalanced salt levels. Combinations that hide flavours. Mediocre wine. Good service but overall experience was overrated and set to be forgotten. This is a kind of place that may be good enough for a casual lunch. But does not deserve a michelin star.
Stopped by for lunch with a friend. We were seated at the window so perfect for people watching. Very attentive service. Food selection is not broad but every dish has it's own appeal. Have seen complaints about the price but the meal costs are very reasonable when the quality of each dish is considered. If you want to cut your bill stay away from the wine because that is where your costs will add up quickly.
Tried the 5 course prix fixe lunch deal through travelzoo. Was worried that we would get second rate "Groupon crowd" food. Definitely felt like they treated the entire meal as such, instead of making it an opportunity to win over new repeat customers.
Tartare was bland. Trout was overcooked with soggy skin. And the pork was very dry. I have been there for dinner and this was not even close to as good as the "full price menu".
Bone broth and hazelnut dessert were tasty though.
Overall, I used to recommend MMina as a good date/anniversary place to friends based on my previous dinner experiences, but this meal left a bad taste in my mouth.
We experienced Michael Mina through a Travel Zoo deal. It was worth the drive from the peninsula. The tasting menu of 5 dishes was a lovely introduction to the restaurant. This is a richly-appointed restaurant with a high-ceiling dining room and an elegant ambiance. The food was delicious, especially the outstanding dessert (chocolate cream, hazelnut and coffee cake) which rounded the meal perfectly. The service was impeccable and we felt welcomed from the moment we stepped through the door. We shall definitely return to try some of their signature dishes.
Food and service excellent.
Wine pricing many times what I would expect. Many wines 3/4 times retail vs 2 x retail. Could be justified for older rare vintages-BUT not for wines released in the last five years. Had to peruse the list at length to identify a good value for the red and white wines we chose. (List on MM website-did not match the physical list handed to us-making my advance choices null and void.)
Some issues with the food quality. Mentioned several times to staff with no real intervention or offering for something better. Service was extremely sparse. No one checked in with us the entire time to ask about a second drink or how things were going - and we got the chefs tasting too!
If you like your steak fire grilled or even seared in a pan then Do Not Order the Steak, at Michael Mina they prepare their stake via Sous-vide (in a plastic bag filled with water), which probably saves time during a rush but unfortunately the steak came out tasting rubbery and bland. It forces you to smothered the steak with accompanying sauces, which might be their objective.
The rest of the meal was sublime, I would highly recommend the Duck.
All I can say is it was an outstanding experience! We chose the chef's selection along with the wine pairing. Each plate was delicious! We were seated in a private little corner tucked away. The service at the bar and our table was impeccable. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for the best food experience!
This was my first time at Michael Mina. I was totally impressed with the ambiance and the great service. What took me over the top was the excellent presentation and flavors we all got from the wonderful dishes. The only problem was choosing what to eat within the five course menu! My son is a sous chef at a Michelin restaurant in SF and he has put this restaurant on the top of his list!
We spent NYE in SF which included our 2nd visit to the restaurant. The early seating included a 5 course tasting menu only, with optional wine pairing. The fluke terradito was fabulous, as well as the scallops, maine lobster and syrah wagyu short rib. Wine selections were paired very well except for the Syrah. They accommodated my request to replace the Syrah. Service was excellent and staff was very friendly.
SMALL DETAILS COUNT!
Prix Fixe meal was very good, beautifully presented and obviously carefully orchestrated in serve ware that was inspired by art. Clearly a large investment was made in serve ware (not votive on the table).
Service left some to be desired - One of the party could not have Lobster and told the wait staff that prior to dinner. She acknowledged that, saying she would consult with chef. She NEVER RETURNED to make an offering of an alternative course! Rather, just served a lentil dish while others received the lobster course.
The Washroom was not well attended -sinks were very dirty(not just wet) , backside of doors were worn and chipped and most shocking was the flower arrangements in the nooks were actually dead and crisp. White Peonies were shriveled, white Asiatic lilies brown on edges, I would've believed that for the New Year's eve service (not your ordinary night) Fresh flowers would have been presented. Our party was part of the first seating, can only imagine what happened later in the evening for $50 more.
There are many restaurants in the San Francisco area that present extraordinary food with attention to all the details that elevate the entire experience beyond good.
Might a Michelin reviewer have reneged on the star?
I started with tuna tartare. It was delicious! But the woman who served it was on the “not so pleasant “ side. My friend and I had the trout. Love the way it was prepared! The skin was crispy!
The rest of the staff we came in contact with were just wonderful! Very friendly!
