Mezcalina Ratings and Reviews
Excellent!! We had a craving for Mexican within walking distance of our hotel. There are so many places to choose from - we decided to try Mezcalina. So glad we did....margaritas, guacamole and meals were delicious and the service was great!
Would definitely go back - recommend highly!!
Authentic Mexican dining. Vibrant setting, in a small venue. Friendly service, with a good margarita selection and authentic Mexican sauces and great food selection. Reservations are recommended due to the small dining area. Also, do not expect a cab or uber for transportation. There is a parking garage a few doors down. They have no reception, therefore getting a signal to call an uber is futile. Guacamole, is good, and their mole enchiladas were excellent.
One of the more creative menus we’ve seen—we shared two of the main courses and a torta so we could have a variety. It was plenty for four. The waiter was a lot of fun—I couldn’t decide between two drinks so he said he would surprise me. Loved all the art and it’s in a great area just north of Millennium Park that I want to explore further. Will definitely come back as part of our explorations.
They were still decorating so the ambiance was not fully there, but the large paintings on the wall lent great color and atmosphere. I would recommend the octopus and the chicken mole, very tasty. The cocktails are also very interesting and flavorful, and since we had a table near the window it was nice to look out into the adjoining park and see the greenery and flowers. Service was excellent and our waitress's recommendations were on the money. Not cheap, but not expensive either, just right. I would certainly go back.
As some of the other reviews have noted, this restaurant is hard to find and the service is variable. The food was fine, but not that creative or different. The drinks were also fine, but way too much ice in the glass, so you end up with about 3-4 oz of actual drink. I agree with other reviewers that chips and salsa should be free. Water glasses were not re-filled, so that was disappointing and our wait to pay the bill was a little longer than it should have been, hence my low rating for service. The decor is really cool, so the vibe is festive. With so many other Mexican restaurants in the city, I would not make a trip back to this one simply because it was just ok.
Took a chance and invited friends to this restaurant for a birthday celebration. Curiously un-crowded for a Friday night. Food was good but the service was not up to par at all. Had to call waiter over repeatedly for water refills. Not cool to have to wait so long for first drink on a Friday night. Had to ask when the tortilla soup was coming and was informed when the entree's came that there was no soup tonight. Ordered flan for the birthday boy (only a few desserts on the menu) and was later informed there is no flan. How can a Mexican restaurant not have flan? They did comp us a drink for the poor service but I will not go back here nor recommend it.
We've been to Mezcalina several times for dinner and once for Sunday brunch. The staff is always friendly and efficient. They make fine margaritas. We especially like the chicken with pistachio mole, although their other moles are very good too. Their soft tacos are messy, but delicious.
We have been to this restaurant several times and always enjoyed but this time had a very poor experience.
We invited another couple who also like maxcan food. Here is what happened:
1 ordered drinks, they serve three of us, so we are waiting for ten minutes for beer for our guest.
Nothing, I got up and reminded them, finally after eating, they bring the beer bottle but no glass for which had to wait for another five minutes.
2 we aredered chips and guacamole as soon as we sat down. Guess what, twenty five minutes after two reminders.
3 appetizer s came on time and were ok.
4 dinner. After long wait, they bring my dinner only. So we are waiting and waiting for the rest three while my dinner is getting cold, their excuse, oh your dish was ready so we brought it first.
So after about fifteen minutes, their dinner shows up.
Must admit, the manager came to apologise.
Hence, it was a bed night and left very poor impression on our guest.
We have been there several times now as we live in the neighborhood . The food is consistently fantastic. The service, however, really needs to improve. It is consistently sub par. We feel very rushed when we go there. Our waiter ( that we have had 3 times now) seems to be in such a panic and hurried rush whether it is busy or not. He then makes us feel that way. It is almost a feeling of imposition. They need to discipline this person, or unload him. They also could hire more staff. Overall great food and kudos to the chef (s). Sadly, with the experiences, they are going to loose customers. "M.C." should shape up or consider choosing another line of work.
Everything about this hidden gem is great except for the service. We had the same terrible server twice (Miguel). I would walk out rather than have him again. He was almost frantic in his mannerisms and paid little or no attention to our dining party. We waited for water, drinks, and food all while the restaurant was not very busy. We had to ask other servers for help. He then messed up the bill on both occasions including losing our credit card. I really like this place and hate to leave a negative review but this guy ruined two dinners.
Dreadful. We reserved a table for 2, but still had to wait. Service was shocking, and no-one cleared off the dirty tables around us while we were eating. They stayed dirty with piles of leftover food for over 30 minutes. And as icing on the cake, we had to sit and witness the manager (-presumably), berating his staff constantly, for not working hard enough. How about hiring more staff?! A depressing experience.
I have been a regular customer of Mescalina since they opened a few years ago in the New Eastside neighborhood where I live. I have been with them through their rocky first couple of years, their closing for remodeling and their very delayed opening last year while I feared they were going out of business. I have enjoyed a few meals there since they reopened, but was always concerned about the number of empty tables and whether they would continue to survive at their hard-to-find location.
This visit was at 6 o clock on a Saturday night with the neighborhood swarming with outsiders because of Taste of Chicago a couple of blocks away. There were no empty tables and it was obvious that the kitchen and serving staff were overwhelmed. It took almost 1/2 hour for our order to arrive at the table, but the food was worth the wait, as their excellent food has always been. A major problem was the deafening noise level from the chattering crowd of patrons plus the loud piped-in Mexican music. My companion and I had to literally shout across our small table to hear each other.
The price of the meal was moderate and reasonable as usual, but there was a $2 charge for salsa! C'mon, no Mexican restaurant ever charges for the salsa they put on the table along with the chips. How come there was no charge for the chips??!! If I had seen this charge before paying the bill, I would have objected strongly. Banks gave up charging teller fees because their customers regarded it as an expected service and I think this restaurant should do the same with its salsa charge.
Having said all that, I still highly recommend this restaurant for its wonderful food, but only if you can put up with the slow service, excruciating noise level and gratuitous charges on the bill.
Great food, friendly service. Cute area in a wonderful park. There is outside dining where willl will be returning with our dog after she visits the dog park across the street. Wonderful cocktails with fresh ingredients. The blueberry margarita was delicious.
