Great food and atmosphere!
Food is always good and the margaritas are superb. The guacamoles are very good and the regular or mezcal margaritas are excellent. With so many tequilas, their tequila flights are a very good way to get to know a few tequilas. We like their salsas and the mole poblano in excellent .. I ask for it on the side just so I can add it to just about every dish. Service is always courteous, making this hard-to-find place worth exploring.
I was impressed with the numerous selections on the menu. Everything from appetizers to entrees that my friends and I ordered were excellent. Their wine offerings are minimal, but they make great cocktails. Service was excellent.
too bad more people don't know about this place for after work or dinner. Great spot!
Great food and beautiful restaurant for brunch or dinner
I really love this place!!! The atmosphere was awesome, the service was great and the food was beyond amazing!!! It has became my favorite spot. Do not take my word for it. Try it for yourself!!!
We were a little early for our reservation but were seated right away. We tried the traditional guacamole and four different tacos. Everything was very delicious. By 6 pm on a Sunday every table was full, a testament to the food and service. Highly recommend trying if you have not been, great food.
Food was really great and I am definitely going back. It was a creative foodie experience. Some of the portion sizes were smaller than one would normally get at a Mexican restaurant (but not the nachos) but we expected that based on previous reviews. I would have liked more mole with my shrimp, and when I mentioned that to the server, he let me know that I could always have asked for more (noted for the future). There were a couple of hiccups with our orders, but they were quickly corrected and we weren't sure if it was the kitchen or the server.
I love the decor in the restaurant, from the cozy waiting area inside the door, to the lights and art, just a great room. The food was excellent and the servers prompt without hovering.
Service was excellent. Food was delicious and its presentation as it was plateed was picturesque. Special requests were honored. And, I loved their strawberry margaritas!! Ole! Ole!
Excellent ambience, good food, moderate portions, and centrally located. Will definitely go back again.
It's been a while since I've been there so I have to say I was pretty disappointed. The old menu (which is still on their website) was wonderful--so many creative and delicious entrees. Now, very few entrees and kind of boring. My friend and I went for enchiladas (not in the entree section) and they were not good. Chicken was dry and beyond the mole, no real flavor.
Wish they'd bring the original menu back.
Love this hidden gem! Great food, art, tequila and service.
Went there for a business lunch. It was a nice hidden gem behind the Blue Cross Building across the street from the Lake Shore East Park. Good menu with authentic Mexican food. The services was pretty attentive. Ordered tasty tacos and was not disappointed. Also enjoyed the ambiance. Lively, but not too loud which is good for business meetings.
Great food and experience! Not sure why they have to put the word "upscale" in their title. I would not really consider this very upscale. It was nice though. Would go back.
This is one of my favorite neighborhood finds. The wait staff is friendly and the food is always great.
We had a great time and spent 4 relaxing hours with family!
Everything we had was very good. We have nothing negative to say. It is in the top echelon of Mexican restaurants in the city.
The steak was to die for! Although the guacamole was fresh it was bland and all the other dishes were just ok. Drinks were worth the visit
Great Place!!! We will definitely be back. Food service and atmosphere really great. Prices are reasonable too.
Living nearby, I've dined occasionally at Mezcalina since it opened a number of years ago and following a long shut-down and re-invention of its menu. This time was an okay experience but not as good as some of the past visits. The server was friendly but considering how few tables were occupied, he seemed to take a long time to bring stuff. The Mezcalina guacamole adds small pieces of pineapple to the usual "tradicional" recipe and it really works nicely. I enjoyed the rib eye & shrimp fajitas, served sizzling hot and mouth-wateringly aromatic. Although almost worth the chew for its scrumptious taste, the rib eye was rather tough, but the shrimp and veggies were perfect. (Why is beef served at typical Mexican restaurants so often not very tender?) My companion praised the tilapia taco, but not so much the lamb. For any fire-eaters like me who may come here, definitely ask for their extra-hot salsa. It's by request only and uncommonly hot for restaurant salsas, even almost hot enough for this fire-eater.
The Number One Problem with this place is the extremely loud Mex pop music that almost destroys any chance at easy conversation but does leave one more inclined to study the interesting original contemporary Mexican paintings on the walls. Several years ago the acting manager gave us a docent-quality study of all the works and their creators, which significantly shortened the wait for the food.
This was our second visit to Mezcalina during a week-long vacation in Chicago staying at a nearby hotel. We loved the décor in the restaurant as well as the relaxed atmosphere and friendly and attentive service.
I will not be recommending this place to anyone. I had reservations MONTHS in advance and did not get word of them closing early for the holidays until the day of my reservation. My reservation was for 12/23 at 9pm and they called me hours prior to tell me that they close at 9pm. This was supposed to be a special day for my wife since it was her birthday and this restaurant was completely ignorant and unprofessional.
This was the first place at which we ate after arriving in Chicago from Europe. Very good food, friendly and attentive service, pleasant ambience, attractive interior.
Great high-end Mexican. It is our go-to neighborhood spot.
Service very slow. Bartender was trying to take care of the bar and wait tables. Got a couple of rib eye tacos....only four small pieces of steak in each one, with at least half of the meat being inedible. Over $100 for three people with a few drinks.
Amazing food. Good service.
Great Mexican cuisine. Margaritas were just right and service was great!
This was a great little find off the beaten path of Michigan Ave - Angel was wonderful and recognized that our meal was business and took care of us as needed. We never felt rushed and were able to accomplish our meeting goals while having great food. I want to return to try the cocktails...
Our server, Christian, helped make our experience enjoyable.
Clean, friendly and very good food. Whole fried Snapper was great!0
Tacos & steak fajitas very good quality & taste-personable/good server-only one small disappointment-asked my fajitas to be wrapped-thought it would have included remaining tortilla but it didn’t-
Excellent!! We had a craving for Mexican within walking distance of our hotel. There are so many places to choose from - we decided to try Mezcalina. So glad we did....margaritas, guacamole and meals were delicious and the service was great!
Would definitely go back - recommend highly!!
Authentic Mexican dining. Vibrant setting, in a small venue. Friendly service, with a good margarita selection and authentic Mexican sauces and great food selection. Reservations are recommended due to the small dining area. Also, do not expect a cab or uber for transportation. There is a parking garage a few doors down. They have no reception, therefore getting a signal to call an uber is futile. Guacamole, is good, and their mole enchiladas were excellent.
One of the more creative menus we’ve seen—we shared two of the main courses and a torta so we could have a variety. It was plenty for four. The waiter was a lot of fun—I couldn’t decide between two drinks so he said he would surprise me. Loved all the art and it’s in a great area just north of Millennium Park that I want to explore further. Will definitely come back as part of our explorations.
They were still decorating so the ambiance was not fully there, but the large paintings on the wall lent great color and atmosphere. I would recommend the octopus and the chicken mole, very tasty. The cocktails are also very interesting and flavorful, and since we had a table near the window it was nice to look out into the adjoining park and see the greenery and flowers. Service was excellent and our waitress's recommendations were on the money. Not cheap, but not expensive either, just right. I would certainly go back.
Great first time along with catching up with one of the owner's post diner made for a nice evening. Look forward to dinner and talking with him again as we were running late for an event.
Great place to eat. The food was delicious and our drinks complimented the food well. But there was only two waiters and a manager serving. Service was slow because of it but the food made up for the wait. I would love to come back here again
