Located in Downtown San Jose, Mezcal boasts one of the most distinctive dining rooms in San Jose. The brick exterior, metal work and indigenous Mexican motifs, sets the restaurant apart from its neighbors. Although the design is urban upscale, there is nothing watered down about the menu. Mezcal proudly serves authentic Oaxacan regional cuisine utilizing family recipes passed on from previous generations.

Mezcal Ratings and Reviews
This was the first time I had attended this restaurant, hoping to give my sister a great dinner and drinks experience for her birthday.
When I confirmed reservation over phone (for 10 people) I was told that the table's tab would be combined in to one with over eight people.
In addition to being disappointed with the drink quality (The Perfect Margarita) we were all disappointed with the customer service.
At the close of our tab, I requested to separate the bills (3ways) since only seven of us had shown up but was told by server he could not do that. I told him of the conversation I had in making the reservation and he (reluctantly) said he would accommodate. He then came back with only 2 tabs, I reminded him we needed 3. He not so politely said "so I have to combine them again?" I said yes, please. He quickly walked off looking very displeased.
I do not have servers name but this dinner reservation was Friday, Oct. 20 at 8:15pm.
Based on the service we received, I would not recommend or attend this restaurant again.
Everything about my experience was wonderful. From the server being attentive and genuine, yet not overbearing. The food was made to the point it was home cooking, from the table side guacamole to the homemade corn tortillas. My friend and I enjoyed every bit of it! I will definitely be back and will tell everyone I know. What a gem!
Some friends and I went here for an early dinner before a show, and we were very disappointed.
The atmosphere: We were seated directly in front of a set of VERY loud speakers where a DJ was playing obnoxious EDM music. If it was 9pm, I could see it but this was 5:30pm. We asked to be re-seated and requested the music be turned down but were told it was not possible by 3 different staff members. (I'm pretty sure all speakers have volume control).
The food: I am generally easy to please when it comes to Mexican food, but this was probably the worst I've had. I ordered a salad and the tortilla soup. The salad was pretty gross -- the lettuce was wilted and it had way too much dressing. The soup was very bland, pretty much tasted like someone just opened a can and threw a few tortilla chips on top.
The service: It felt like our waiter was intentionally trying to ignore us. After taking forever to bring out our drinks we were left several times with empty chips, salsa and drinks and found it nearly impossible to flag him down.
Overall it felt like no one at the restaurant cared about delivering a good customer experience. I will definitely not be coming back.
My 28 year old son and I ate here before seeing a play. Service was terrible, food was mediocre. The chicken mole was a tiny chicken breast swimming in sauce, that's it! The chili rellenos were stuffed with a meat concoction, which was flavorful, but garnished with a couple tablespoons of white rice, a couple tablespoons of guacamole, and a radish rose. Nobody ever came by to offer water, or any other drink, and I had to go up to the register, finally, to get a tab, because the surly waiter never even looked our way. The bartender was the only one who ever helped us. Wouldn't go again if they paid me!
The food was decent but not particularly distinctive. Service was a bit off; the server didn't notice when he came by to ask how was everything that one diner hadn't been served. We didn't get a drinks list and so didn't even know about the mescal's on offer; kind of funny for a place with this name.
Dined with my 7 co-workers tonight and we left full and happy. We started with drinks and guacamole table side, which has set my standards so high now for fresh guacamole. Just watching it being made in the molcajete brought a smile to my face that didn't leave for the rest of the evening. For my first time here, I ordered the tlayuda while mostly everyone else ordered a dish with mole. We finished with dessert - hot chocolate, flan, platanos, and chocolate cake. From the empty plates, you could say we all enjoyed our meals. The service was prompt and staff is super friendly - just a good vibe at this place. I look forward to coming back and trying the estofado.
Visited for Sara's 20th Birthday! Don David J had the tacos al pastor - perfect; Doña Mishy stuck with her usual sea bass - the bacon is a great touch; Birthday Girl Sara enjoyed chicken enchiladas - she loved them and could not get enough rice.
Adolfo and his family are the best!
We had a party of 13 and we were well accommodated. The ambiance was great. The food was great and moderately priced. I ordered a Paloma drink and it was meh. The only concern I had was the limited staffing. This place was quite busy for a Monday evening and only 1 server for the entire restaurant. He worked hard to take care of us but we also felt rushed to order, etc. I would go back again but with a much smaller group.
The food was decent but not great. My expectations were a bit higher due to the price. The mezcal mixed drinks were very good. The food was good, but nothing I ate really stood out. There are other local Oaxacan restaurants in the SJ area that are more mom and pop style with tastier if not similar food for half the price. But that's the problem with up-scale Mexican restaurants; everything has to be exceptional because you can find something very similar for cheaper elsewhere. Overall, if price isn't a deal-breaker its a good date place or an introductory to Oaxacan Mexican cuisine.
From the moment we sat down it was as if the wait staff was trying to rush us out, not a moment to enjoy the surroundings, food & environment. It's wasn't so busy, the waiter was just on level 10 rushing around, trying to get us to order asap, then forgetting chips & salsa. As we where eating one of the waiters reached across the table & grabbed a plate of food we where still eating from & we had to ask for it back. This was my second time there & I wouldn't recommend it or go back, as portions where also small and I don't feel as I got bang for my buck. The decor is great, which is why we went for my daughter's birthday.
We recently went to Mezcal's for an early dinner. The service was great and all of the dishes on the menu looked so tempting it was hard to choose. This is not your typical Mexica food restaurant . The cook is from Oxteca and the food is uniquely different. I had the chicken with black mole sauce. I wanted to lick the plate! I can't wait to go back.
Food and atmosphere were good, but our server had NO personality. We are a lively group and had 8 people, which guarantees him 20% tip--which he didn't earn. Not accommodating for changes to the menu items, not one smile--even when we ordered the 2nd pitcher of margaritas. We did enjoy ourselves, but sadly probably won't be back for a work outing. I would recommend chips/salsa/guacamole and margaritas on the patio when the weather turns sunny--maybe before a show or game downtown.
