The mole is the best I have had. Prompt service and authentic.
We were pretty badly disappointed with Mezcal. The primary issue was the prices of everything but the main dishes. While our meals came to a pretty reasonable $65 or so for four people, but with drinks, 1 appetizer, 1 salad and an added bit of guacamole the bill mushroomed to $151. Tip $20 more to $171.
Now $171 or about $43 p-p wouldn't have been too bad for a excellent meal and drinks, but we all found the main dishes and the mixed drinks to be pretty lacking in flavor. This is Oaxacan food; we've been to Oaxaca. Food in Oaxaca is vibrant with flavor, generous with accompaniments with the main course, even colorful.
The food at Mezcal was actually pretty bland. Had I been blindfolded, I could not have even told you that my Enchiladas Suizas were Mexican food. The enchiladas did not have flavored chicken inside, instead a couple of pieces of dried, apparently baked chicken were on top of a corn torilla, all floating in a bath of salsa verde.
The salsa verde had no more flavor than a can of Herdez. In addition, the servings were what I call "nouvelle cuisine paltry". I don't ascribe to the "art" of putting a dab of food in the middle of a large plate, decorating the plate around it, and then fawning about how cute it all is.
The drinks - mojitos and margaritas - were pretty poorly made and relatively lacking in flavor.
I would advise against this restaurant -- especially in San Jose where excellent Mexican food abounds.
I went there for my b-day. I had to find a place for a group of ten and it was the one place that could sit all of us. I like the mixed drinks and the ambiance. The only thing that it was a bit distracting was the loud music...
Had heard a lot good things about this place and decided to try it. I was not disappointed! It felt so genuine, El Ambiente se siente, the food was amazing, the music was perfect, this is definitely a place I will recommend and come back to.
Mezcal was fun!
The food is always consistent and great and the Mexcalrita’s rock!
This is one of my favorite spots downtown.
We have been to Mezcal many times. It is always delicious. Service is attentive. One of our go to’s when downtown SJ
The food is always great and the micheladas are a must try! Everyone is friendly and they make you feel comfortable regardless of how crowded and busy they might be.
Two thumbs way up. Fabulous mole. The waiter brought us a taste of all three flavors to help us make our selection. The only downside was we felt incredibly rushed by the waiter. We had to tell him to go away at least four times. Don't force us to order as soon as the appetizers are delivered. Great food, great margaritas.
Lovely place in San Jose, within walking distance of the performing arts center which was convenient for a dinner date before a performance. Casual place but good food, not absolutely amazing but also not expensive. Would come back again.
The food quality and taste is not as good as I remember it.
The worst aervice and the food is not authentic. We ordered Shot of mezcal and a beer and waited more than 10 minutes for it while eating dinner and I asked them to cancel and and paid my bill and left the place.
We had a work team dinner there and it was a lot of fun and everyone had a good time. Lots of good options for meat eaters and vegetarians. It was a bit noisy due to another party, but good overall. Staff was super nice and helpful.
Authentic Mexican food and Mezcalritas. Our food - Avocado Prawns Salad and Sea Bass plate, were tasty and arrived timely. The service was attentive and prompt. Prices were very reasonable.
It was so good that we went back the next day - definitely try the fish,
Mezcal is close to our offices and it's often a first choice location for get-togethers and celebrations. On this last occasion, we were taking time to meet for the end of the year and saying goodbye to two valued colleagues who are retiring. We were a part of 11, large but not overly so.
I love that Mexcal uses an online reservation system. It makes things so much easier and it was a breeze to use. We have one more person attend but it wasn't really a problem (more on that later).
Some in our party ordered appetizers, which came out pretty quickly and seemed to be enjoyed by all who had them. The food overall was tasty and there were even options for the vegetarian and vegan members of our party. I ordered the salmon salad which had a wonderful taste and it was good, except that it made me sick. Within the hour of returning to my office, I was regretting my choice. Not sure if it was the salmon or the spinach, either way, I would skip it next time.
The reason I gave this experience an overall two stars was not because the food made me sick. I gave it two stars overall because of our server. Throughout our lunch, he was for lack of a better word, surely. He just made us feel like we were an imposition anytime we asked for anything i.e. forks, questions about the menu, etc. It was also hard to get his attention when we needed him, and his service was slow. I would have just put it down to an off day for him, but some in our party had been to Mezcal the week before and had the same experience with him.
It could be he needs to have some more customer service training that works on his soft skills.
So go for the great ambiance, stay away from the salmon salad, and if your server seems to act like you are beneath him, don't worry it's not you.
Great quality ingredients in their meals. Perhaps they could up their game with their drinks. Better ingredients in those
It was just....ok. I thought it would be better food. The service however was quite good.
The margarita pitchers are dangerously good. We had a group of 8 and went through 4 large pitchers.
The only thing was the waiter was 👎 not good in serving service to slow and he blame the kitchen but even wen I ask for a napkin he took to long I need to get up and pick up mmy selfh the napkin no good service
The food was bland and the service was very rude. Chips were stale. They did not refill water or clear all the plates
Sadly it was quite disappointing. The atmosphere is so lively and nice, the service was great, but the food was really rather terrible. I ordered the ceviche and I'm not really sure what was in it, but it seemed like it was canned fish because it was kind of ground up. Not at all like what I'm used to when ordering device. The chips are kind of stale/overly crunchy. My partner's food was a little better but lukewarm. The drinks weren't very good either, I tried both a Margarita and the Sangria. Bummed.
The food was very tasty, and we love mole - we will be back soon!
The Mole' was amazing. The prices were great for the quality of the food. Enjoyed having the guacamole made tableside and tailored to our taste needs. I look forward to returning again an again.
Business meeting dinner. 8 of us. In and out, no fuss, no nonsense. Great food and good drinks. Attentive service. Walking distance from much of the convention and hotel spaces downtown. Recommended.
This was the first time I had attended this restaurant, hoping to give my sister a great dinner and drinks experience for her birthday.
When I confirmed reservation over phone (for 10 people) I was told that the table's tab would be combined in to one with over eight people.
In addition to being disappointed with the drink quality (The Perfect Margarita) we were all disappointed with the customer service.
At the close of our tab, I requested to separate the bills (3ways) since only seven of us had shown up but was told by server he could not do that. I told him of the conversation I had in making the reservation and he (reluctantly) said he would accommodate. He then came back with only 2 tabs, I reminded him we needed 3. He not so politely said "so I have to combine them again?" I said yes, please. He quickly walked off looking very displeased.
I do not have servers name but this dinner reservation was Friday, Oct. 20 at 8:15pm.
Based on the service we received, I would not recommend or attend this restaurant again.
I’ve been here for lunch before - this was the first dinner - great for a small group - we had seven in our party, business colleagues, most from the Mid West. They loved it!
Everything about my experience was wonderful. From the server being attentive and genuine, yet not overbearing. The food was made to the point it was home cooking, from the table side guacamole to the homemade corn tortillas. My friend and I enjoyed every bit of it! I will definitely be back and will tell everyone I know. What a gem!
Been here a few times now and really enjoy the food, service and location. Always a great dining night out.
Food and service was great. Went when it was quiet, early lunch. Enjoyed the food, and the great customer service. Friendly atmosphere, good location.
pretty underwhelmed with the service.
also their guacamole sucks.
overall though, I thought the food was decent. It was fun to try the crickets again.
Mother in laws meeting for the first time
This is our family favorite in downtown San Jose. We come for family get together dinners, post game eats, my son and his friends went before prom...always with incredible food and service. We love it!
Some friends and I went here for an early dinner before a show, and we were very disappointed.
The atmosphere: We were seated directly in front of a set of VERY loud speakers where a DJ was playing obnoxious EDM music. If it was 9pm, I could see it but this was 5:30pm. We asked to be re-seated and requested the music be turned down but were told it was not possible by 3 different staff members. (I'm pretty sure all speakers have volume control).
The food: I am generally easy to please when it comes to Mexican food, but this was probably the worst I've had. I ordered a salad and the tortilla soup. The salad was pretty gross -- the lettuce was wilted and it had way too much dressing. The soup was very bland, pretty much tasted like someone just opened a can and threw a few tortilla chips on top.
The service: It felt like our waiter was intentionally trying to ignore us. After taking forever to bring out our drinks we were left several times with empty chips, salsa and drinks and found it nearly impossible to flag him down.
Overall it felt like no one at the restaurant cared about delivering a good customer experience. I will definitely not be coming back.
Great tasting drinks. The decor of the restaurant is beautiful. Overall great place to have a date or just night out.
My 28 year old son and I ate here before seeing a play. Service was terrible, food was mediocre. The chicken mole was a tiny chicken breast swimming in sauce, that's it! The chili rellenos were stuffed with a meat concoction, which was flavorful, but garnished with a couple tablespoons of white rice, a couple tablespoons of guacamole, and a radish rose. Nobody ever came by to offer water, or any other drink, and I had to go up to the register, finally, to get a tab, because the surly waiter never even looked our way. The bartender was the only one who ever helped us. Wouldn't go again if they paid me!
Great food with a lot of mole choices. Excellent margaritas and I recommend the guacamole. Very cute covered patio. Both times I've dined, my food has come out a little cold. Not sure it that is intentional.
Fantastic good. The Mole's were amazing.
Table side guac was delicious...it's a shame that it was prepared behind my back and not really tableside.
The food was decent but not particularly distinctive. Service was a bit off; the server didn't notice when he came by to ask how was everything that one diner hadn't been served. We didn't get a drinks list and so didn't even know about the mescal's on offer; kind of funny for a place with this name.
Had reservations for six and changed it to eight at the last minute and they accommodated us. We went just before seeing a musical at the Center for performing arts. They worked really hard to get her food to us on time even though they were very busy.
Dined with my 7 co-workers tonight and we left full and happy. We started with drinks and guacamole table side, which has set my standards so high now for fresh guacamole. Just watching it being made in the molcajete brought a smile to my face that didn't leave for the rest of the evening. For my first time here, I ordered the tlayuda while mostly everyone else ordered a dish with mole. We finished with dessert - hot chocolate, flan, platanos, and chocolate cake. From the empty plates, you could say we all enjoyed our meals. The service was prompt and staff is super friendly - just a good vibe at this place. I look forward to coming back and trying the estofado.
