The mole is the reason to go here. It's great.
Excelente ambiente, buen trato muy recomendable para un celebración, una cena romántica.
Fresh, authentic, wonderful food.
Service and atmosphere were very good. Just didn’t care for the food flavor. Kind of bland. Everything was mole style, we prefer regular style enchiladas. Chicken was dry.
Grasshoppers were not up to par. The service was very good but the food was not up to full par. I would go back to try something else.
Had a really fun time on Saturday, my server was great, the food was delicious, outstanding service all around. Definitely coming back.
Very pleasant and accommodating staff and excellent food!
Great service and even better margaritas! Thoroughly enjoyed the table-side guacamole!
We just rolled into town after a long drive up from San Diego. Excellent margaritas! Unique take on enchiladas; very authentic oxacan. Never has such a thin piece of pork; glad for the steak knives. Was good.
Great fun with family and great atmosphere for my 65th birthday!
Food was amazing.
The dinner selections were authentic Mexican faire. The server was attentive and gracious.
Very tasty food. Flavorful and some creative combinations.
A note: difficult for people with food allergies/sensitivities. Really only one dish for people with gluten issues, which is unusual for a Mexican restaurant.
Table side guacamole was bland and disappointing. Dinners were good but food took a long to arrive. Waiter tried to help but could only do so much. Not likely to return.
Accommodating service (kid friendly), friendly servers. great ambience
This is my favorite restaurant in San Jose. Familiar entrees are assembled and plated differently than any other Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to.
Consistently good and open for early dinner on Sundays.
We went here for a graduation and 18% was added automatically for partys over 5. Unforetunately, it seemed our server new he would get tipped and did not offer good, solicitous service. Food was good, price as expected, but it was not busy enough to explain lack of service. Will not return.
I really like Mezcal. Never disappointed in the food or service. Great margaritas and love their chips and salsa.
Great food and a great quirky atmosphere. Fun place to have dinner.
Very bad food. Had grasshopper appetizer very small portion and not flavorful . There beef dish was very dry and not flavorful . Very dissapointed . Would not recommend .
Celebrated 24th wedding anniversary. Love Mezcal!
Good food, good beer, good service, nice atmosphere, in the heart of downtown San Jose. The Mexican food is a different style than other mex restaurants specializing in great tasting sauces.
Food and ambiance were good, but the waiter was pushy, didn't smile, and generally seemed like he didn't want to be there. Made us feel al little uncomfortable.
If we go back, we hope the other staff are warmer. May be just a bad day?...
Rice was hard. Lettuce was brown on my taquitos. Chips were stale. Nice ambiance and good salsa. Not much more than that. Wanted to like the place for a good go to before the theater but the carts outside may have been a better dtsj option.
Grabbed dinner with a friend. Not your usual Mexican menu, lots of interesting items along with some more standard fare. We both enjoyed our meals.
If you are allergic to nuts, there is a lot of mole with nuts in many dishes, so beware.
The mole is amazing!! Cleaned my plate
We went after a graduation and had a party of 8, including 2 kids under 12. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious! We had questions about the mole and the server brought out samples, which changed our order and encouraged us to get mole! The guacamole made at the table was so amazing we ordered a second serving!
We will all be back to Mezcal and bringing friends!!
Great dinner as always!! Our go to place after a play.
The restaurant did not have our OpenTable reservation, but they were very gracious and seated us right away. The chicken flautas and tamales mole were delicious. As was the margarita and Sterling Merlot. Service was excellent. We will return. The menu has lots more goodies to try!
Had a good experience and food was delicious! Our server was very attentive. The food tasted healthy, organic NOT can which is great.
This was our 3rd visit to Mezcal it will not be our last. That speaks for itself.
We enjoyed the sampler plate, fresh guacamole....the best was the three moles!
Owner stopped by to say hello to us, and explain Oaxaca regional foods.
The mole is the best I have had. Prompt service and authentic.
We were pretty badly disappointed with Mezcal. The primary issue was the prices of everything but the main dishes. While our meals came to a pretty reasonable $65 or so for four people, but with drinks, 1 appetizer, 1 salad and an added bit of guacamole the bill mushroomed to $151. Tip $20 more to $171.
Now $171 or about $43 p-p wouldn't have been too bad for a excellent meal and drinks, but we all found the main dishes and the mixed drinks to be pretty lacking in flavor. This is Oaxacan food; we've been to Oaxaca. Food in Oaxaca is vibrant with flavor, generous with accompaniments with the main course, even colorful.
The food at Mezcal was actually pretty bland. Had I been blindfolded, I could not have even told you that my Enchiladas Suizas were Mexican food. The enchiladas did not have flavored chicken inside, instead a couple of pieces of dried, apparently baked chicken were on top of a corn torilla, all floating in a bath of salsa verde.
The salsa verde had no more flavor than a can of Herdez. In addition, the servings were what I call "nouvelle cuisine paltry". I don't ascribe to the "art" of putting a dab of food in the middle of a large plate, decorating the plate around it, and then fawning about how cute it all is.
The drinks - mojitos and margaritas - were pretty poorly made and relatively lacking in flavor.
I would advise against this restaurant -- especially in San Jose where excellent Mexican food abounds.
I went there for my b-day. I had to find a place for a group of ten and it was the one place that could sit all of us. I like the mixed drinks and the ambiance. The only thing that it was a bit distracting was the loud music...
Had heard a lot good things about this place and decided to try it. I was not disappointed! It felt so genuine, El Ambiente se siente, the food was amazing, the music was perfect, this is definitely a place I will recommend and come back to.
Mezcal was fun!
The food is always consistent and great and the Mexcalrita’s rock!
This is one of my favorite spots downtown.
We have been to Mezcal many times. It is always delicious. Service is attentive. One of our go to’s when downtown SJ
