Metuchen Inn Ratings and Reviews
It was our first time experiencing the Metuchen Inn and the environment was very nice. I was not as pleased with the food because with the high prices I was really expecting to be blown away. We ordered 2 fish plates and they were good but not worth the price. The service was AMAZING! Jose was a great waiter and truly knows how to make people feel welcomed.
The Metuchen Inn is a lovely restaurant and the food is excellent. All of our meals were delightful. Unfortunately, on this visit, there were 2 very large parties which affected the service all the way round. We will def go back, but will choose a later time.
B/B+. We were disappointed that our server did not tell us the specials. We only realized that there were any when we overheard another server telling an adjacent table. By then, we were already on dessert. What server forgets to mention the specials? A harried one, by the looks of it. She forgot bread for our table too and only provided it when asked. The portions were reasonable. I had the Filet Mignon, which was prepared as requested. It was served with vegetables, including two sorry-looking tomato halves that were very under ripe. They should never had been put on a plate that costs $39. Wine is overpriced - a bottle is triple the price that you'd pay in a liquor store. I understand there is always a mark-up but triple? The beer selections were extensive and more reasonably priced. My companion had the wild boar, which was a unique choice on the menu.
Servers were loudly arguing about having to carry tables to the upstairs area in the dining room. It was easy to hear what they were saying.
They also were putting plates on the side station very loudly throughout dinner.
Food was solid.
Another issue was the wine list. We ordered a bottle with a vintage of 2011. When the sommelier brought the bottle over, it was a 2013. He presented it and I pointed it out. He acknowledged it was wrong. He also then told me that it was a bit more expensive than the 2011. I was surprised and slightly upset. I asked why he would knowingly present the bottle to me when he knew it was wrong. I also mentioned that it was unacceptable to offer me a different bottle at a higher price point without even informing me. He said that the wine list was being printed and it took three to four weeks to come back from the printer. I told him that I would accept the 2013 at the price of the 2011 and he agreed.
They also brought white wine glasses to serve the bottle (a red) when they had glasses with larger bowls on other tables.
I just feel that a place trying to be of a certain caliber, at their price point, should have the finer points of professionalism down.
I've been to the Metuchen Inn several times over the past 20 years and every time, Constantine , the owner greets me like an old friend. This visit ,I ordered the Diver Scallops that may have been the best I have ever had on a bed of pureed sweet potato and Brussel Sprouts. Constantine also suggested a glass of the perfect Sauvignon Blanc to complement the scallops. A perfect meal!
Few realize the wonderful and rare opportunity the Inn offers to be their private personal home dining room offering everything from a $6 bar pie and a beer to a near New York top 20 fine dining dinner or even your personal special order dinner.
The Inn offers private or semi-private quiet romantic dinners from their menu or pre-order something special for yourself, which we'll do from time to time. The piece de resistance was the time we pre-ordered two 2-1/2 lb butter poached lobsters served out of the shell for our semi-private all day lunch.
It's our go to place, because the Inn lets us know whether it's soup and salad, a bar pie, or lobster; they want our business. One of the owners told us, "Don't go to the diner, I want you to come here, instead." Over the years, he's never waivered from that position, being the ever welcoming gracious host no matter what we spent, whether we fine dine or grab a nosh.
It also offers some of the most exquisite tastes anywhere. Last night I had the best mushroom bisque I've ever had. Consistency, very fine service, and high quality provisions set a standard difficult to achieve and difficult to find.
This friendly neighborhood spot is a great restaurant. The food and service is as good or better than top restaurants in New York City. No worries about allergies or special diets, they have a real chef not a primma donna who will accommodate every individual need. Go and enjoy
Wonderful, thoughtful service, ever present and very accommodating. Beautifully prepared and plated appetizers and entrees, with portions satisfying in size. Wine selections well known, available in full, half bottles and by the glass. Water and wine glasses were tended to regularly and finished plates and silverware removed promptly. Our dining experience was relaxed and very enjoyable.
It was my birthday and no better place to celebrate than the Metuchen Inn. Jose’s warm greetings upon entering sets the tone. The service is excellent ! We had a table with fireplace view. We started with shrimp cocktail, which brings large tasty crustaceans and nice spicy sauce. We both chose the halibut, which didn’t disappoint. We had to have dessert...a chocolate soufflé, more like a lava cake..so yummy! The evening was perfect in every way.
Been to this place numerous times, although a bit pricey, always felt that I had gotten a decent value.
Not this time, both my wife and I were very disappointed with our dishes, from appetizer to dessert.
To note, the clams were salty and sandy, total turn off. Both fish entrees, were poorly prepared as if done in a hurry, this for a $34.00 price tag.
Dessert wasn't any better, the only thing that will probably bring me back at least one last time, was service.
Maybe a mere coincidence, but out of the dozen times or so that I visited this place, the two worse experiences came on a reservation @6:00pm on a Friday.
Always a pleasure to dine here. Maitre d' Jose goes a long long way in making every patron feel special and important. Excellent service this evening by Arianna. We shared a shrimp cocktail to start...huge crustaceans! Dinners sift shell crab special and dh's favorite halibut. All washed down with a bottle of decoy Sauvignon blanc. Perfect evening!
we ate lightly for our group of 4 and all but one item were excellent. We loved the tuna, crab and avocado appetizer as well as the salads. The salmon main course was excellent. The seafood combo over pasta was not as successful; some of the fish was overcooked. The service was attentive without being overbearing. good experience.
We had been to the Metuchen Inn for special occasions several times in the past year. This was our 50th Anniversary, and my wife selected it as our place to celebrate. I made a note of our 50th when I made the reservation on Open Table. It was as if we walked in cold off the street! Service was rushed at first, then I explained that we were in no hurry since it was our 50th Anniversary. Then we were told that "Oh, you get complimentary champagne". The food was good, service fine, but we were greatly underwhelmed on our very special day. We probably won't return for a while. Sorry!
