Messhall Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
The food was good but the service was really an issue. It took a long time to place our drink orders. Then, there was a wait until half of our drinks were brought. Then, it was at least a half hour before the rest of our drinks were brought. I would say that we were there almost an hour before all 6 of us had our drink orders.
Our table was noisy and I thought it was very warm. We were close to the kitchen and under the music speaker so it was hard to hear each other. We stopped by for dinner after visiting Griffith Observatory. The restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge. I ordered the slow cooked short rib dish. The server told me it was a house favorite and had been on the menu for the past five years. I'm very glad he recommended it. It was delicious. Meat was tender and the combination of the mashed potatoes, kale, and mushrooms added a home cooked element to the entree. Despite the noise level and the room temperature, we enjoyed ourselves. The service was first class. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food. A bonus on Tuesdays is the $1 tacos. They are small but extremely tasty. I disliked paying $6 for valet parking but I guess that is typical in LA.
A serviceable bar/gastropub...but beware the 3% “surcharge” they add with the general explanation that they are doing it to ensure they can continue to offer good service. Isn’t that what the tip is for? Another option: raise your menu prices instead of this stealth surcharge. If you read online, you’ll see that there are other restaurants trying to pull this on their customers. They never tell you exactly what the 3% will be paying for. They do tell you that you can opt out of paying it by telling your server. My choice is to opt out of dining there again.
Big fan of this place. The brisket is probably my favorite dinner in the area, but I really need to start trying more stuff there. Tuesday is $1 oyster night, if that is your thing. I'm good with about 3 oysters per year. They taste like the ocean. Regardless, Messhall rules and is consistently good.
We'll absolutely be back and you should go check it out too! Mess Hall is cute, delicious, and a fun weeknight meal spot. We went this week and while the service was extremely slow, I think it had more to do with the fact that it was a Tuesday and super busy than due to our server. We do love Mess Hall and the $1 Oyster/$1 taco/$5 draft is SO worth the wait!
Really always love coming here. Great for new parents because there is a lot of space inside and out for strollers. Don't get me wrong it's totally an adult place- great environment, happy and accommodating staff and great food and DRINKS! It's just a plus you can bring your baby too!
First time here for Sunday Brunch. The food was yummy. We shared the dulce de leche french toast, side of bacon, the benny with biscuits and turkey sausage gravy, and cobb salad. My only issue with the food was thay my benny was slightly cold. We had waited some time before the food came out and didn't want to wait again. The server was initially attentive, but was no where to be found after the order was placed and for water or coffee refills. We had to ask the other servers and busser for anything we needed. He showed up only to give us our check. Overall I like this place and find the food enjoyable. My last experience just highlights how important good service is for dining out and how it effects your overall experience.
Eclectic menu that changes periodically. I appreciate that they are willing to work with dietary preferences. Interesting drink selections that proved to be very strong for a Friday evening. It was quieter than it has been in the past, but service was excellent and we were well tended to.
Food was terrible and over priced... chicken was dry and pulled pork wasn't smoked correctly. My mother had one of the salads and it was so tasteless she sent it back. The atmosphere was great and the service was great but the menu and concept need A LOT of work. It's a good location and clean but the food was just waaay off. Not worth my time or money.
Yeah! Dog friendly! But I couldn't believe they do not have a full bar! I wanted an iced coffee with Kaluha and I felt like a dinosaur for asking! They have creative drinks but apparently I am not all that creative except I haven't had an iced coffee brandy since 1972. I must be too old for this place and the food was marginal, tiny portion and expensive. I did get to park there and Uber to The Greek, but it was a huge disappointment. No fun, fun, fun in Los Felix any more. Also found Farfalla disappointing too. Where to go?
Outrageously high level of noise inside. We had to ask to be moved to the patio. The noise level was marginally better, but still difficult for two people to hold a conversation. We've had the same experience on past visits to Messhall. Even though we live in the neighborhood, we don't plan to return. We know at least six other couples in the neighborhood who have said the same.
Overall the dinner was underwhelming. I've been to this place several times and I can safely say that, in my opinion, the quality has gone downhill. The charcuterie tray took just as long to come out as did our dinners which is odd. Also, my friend and I both had upset stomachs that night after having this dinner together. I'll still go for cocktails but will likely go elsewhere for dinner.
It's a good place to meet a friend for a drink and they have a nice patio but it can get rather loud in there for conversation if you're not on the patio.
Loved the concept and decor. People were friendly. The food was just OK. Nothing special about what I had, which was presented as one of their "flagship" dishes and most popular. I had the fried chicken sandwich (sando). A bit bland and very simple. Needed something else. Not in a hurry to go back. Great location but they need to do something to the food to bring folks back a second time.
