Messhall Kitchen has all the touchstones of the camp experience: an all wood, cabin-like décor, a menu full of comfort foods, and their logo, a tree, can be found everywhere down to the plates. It also has all the touchstones of a damn good restaurant.
It was our last night visiting our daughter in LA. Customer Service was outstanding!
We’ll definitely go back!
I've been here a few times but I have to say Monday night's food was EXCEPTIONAL! Thanks to the chef and the staff for their attention to excellence and for their kindness. Cheers!
Just not quite there, everything was just shy of being positively memorable. Except for the hollandaise, which was perfectly light with the perfect balance of horseradish, according to my dining mate. She got the short rib bennie ($16 I think), the presentation was lackluster and the English muffin virtually untoasted. The short rib was tender but had not stand out qualities. The accompanied fruit, however, was quite fresh and sweet and did not include melon a positive for her.
We both ordered the brunch punch ($8), and we both gave it a solid meh. I found it to be unbalanced and lacking any brightness, especially for a spring brunch cocktail. For me simply reducing the lemon juice and a herb garnish, not a lemon wheel, would have made this a great brunch cocktail. She simply felt it was just too tart.
Her second cocktail was the peach sweet tea. I'm not a peach sweet tea fan but thought it was good for what it was, however, it was not at all sweet. A positive for me, but probably not for someone who likes sweet tea.
For my entree, I got the camp scramble ($14) with sourdough toast and hashbrowns. The hash browns were cooked well, as I ordered them, I like them a bit on the overdone side. The scramble was a bit overcooked (this I did not request) and lacked the cheese mentioned in the description. I personally found it pretty flavorless and in much need of salt. The toast could have used a bit more time in the toaster but was nice and sour. The "jam" was, well, syrup. I had to dip my toast, someone clearly forgot the pectin. However, the flavor was nice.
The ambiance was cute and nicely captured a camp feel without being campy.
Service was okay, but not great.
There is a valet only lot and street parking. If you plan on street parking I would give yourself some extra time to park as it was pretty full when we were there.
We go here occasionally. Although there is not an abundance of vegetarian option what they do have is good and not just pasta and sides. Service is pretty consistent and drinks are good. It is loud though.
Very nice. Great servers and hostess.
Our family, including the dog, went here after a day out in LA. The service was nice and the food came out in a timely manner. We came towards the tail end of brunch so Parking was easy and it was quiet. We sat in the outdoor patio which was nice because it was covered as well. Good outdoor indoor vibe.
Pricey, like many gastropubs. One Belgian waffle with whipped cream and berries, no sides, is $14. The food is tasty, portions are a good size. Very family friendly during weekday lunch. Nice evening bar scene, and fun cocktails. I can recommend the Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, I Love Scotch drink. Rotating beer taps is nice. The Boomtown Oatmeal Stout is very good. I want to go back to try the Choose Your Adventure drink option. Vegetarian plates available, and the Veggie Beast Burger is quinoa based, big, and filling.
Good food, well prepared; good service in pleasant casual atmosphere.
Service was slow. Waited a long time for server to approach and then for first drink. Loved the food and the menu is so interesting we will be back soon to try something else!
Food was good - service was a little spotty
Great selection to select from. Server was accommodating but very serious. Restaurant set up is great there’s outdoor or indoor seating. I Will return next time in LA
Friday nights it’s loud and there is a nice hustle and bustle
I've been here often before. This time, three of the five dishes were less than enjoyable.
Really enjoyed the food, service and ambiance of the outside area!
Great family brunch. They honored an 11AM Sunday brunch reservation for 6 without a wait or hassle. Food was good, atmosphere was fine and, most importantly, we didn’t have to wait on a street corner.
The relatively small cowboy omelette was unimpressive. The biscuits were dense and appeared to have been past their prime by the time they were served. The turkey burger was good and the fries were delicious. With two iced teas, the total cost for a light lunch was $50.
Why serve good wine from a thick rimmed kitchen tumbler?
Always one of the best food experiences in Los Angeles - takes reservations, doesn’t take itself too seriously, but drops fantastic food and drinks that can compete with any trendy weho spot. A favorite!
Sub par food for the price
Poor service. Food was not good.
The oysters were full of shell you can bust your teeth or choke and die.
all things considered we payed a fortune for garbage food.
drinks were decent service was good.
the lighting was bad dark in a way that messes with your eyes.
defiantly don't recommend Mess Hall
Mess Hall makes me feel young and beautiful
Very Cool Vibe! Food was top notch and service was outstanding
Dining at M H has brought comfort, goodness, and deliciousness to the belly and the heart. Thank you for creating such a space.
Food was great. Wasn’t expecting California brisket to impress but it really did
A friend suggested this restaurant for a business meeting and I loved it. I thought it was great for the quality of food and ambiance. I will definitely go there again with friends.
Amazing as always, despite I thiiiiiink the corkage fee got raised $10 lol but always a good time at my secret best happy hour in LA 👌🏾
Everyone was happy and everything was great!
We have eaten at Messhall dozens of times. This meal was pretty last minute and it did not disappoint- in fact it surpassed our expectations. The cocktails were perfect, the salads fresh and delicious and the Heritage Burger was a delightful mess. And the fries were hot and crispy. And the smoky ketchup. Really wonderful. Everything, including the service, was just right.
Too many dogs were brought in to the restaurant. Next time I’ll remember to sit inside where I hope dogs are not allowed.
Great place! I have been there for dinner with friends and with my family. Each time was perfect. Loved the food, drinks, and service. I haven't sat at the bar yet, but my husband and I agreed that we will go there on our next date night. It looked like a lot of fun.
The corn fritters were as good as advertised, and the fries were delicious. I gave 4 overall stars; first because the valet was friendly, and the wait staff was courteous and accommodating. However, I can't give 5 stars, because the turkey burger was dry and not seasoned. In addition, my business client's oysters were frozen.
Good food and great spot for any occasion.
The food was great but our food took super long to get to us. We didn’t get a follow up or any notice of where our food was and the waiter would take long for refills.
Great with kids, if your child isn't noise-sensitive like mine is. It was a bit too much for her. We still had a great time, once she got used to it!
The food was fine, but they definitely have a thing about smokey tasting preparations and that's not my favorite. Smoke was all I could taste in the corn fritters, and they recommended by waiter. My husband said his burger was good. Smokey catsup. Smokey tasting drinks. The atmosphere was loud, and the waiter very disinterested in us. Pretty meh, over all.
The menu had a wide array of choices. We ordered BBQ ribs, short ribs, Roasted chicken with a really great mushroom stuffing, a quinoa and black bean bowl, oysters and Brussel Sprouts. All were delicious. The only miss was a shrimp and grits appetizer that my husband thought was too bland. I would go back again, except the service was slow. The waitress was personable and knowledgable. I think she had too many tables and they were inside and outside. Or maybe the kitchen was slow. Could have just been an off night. The food, atmosphere and the really great drinks make it worth going back.
Went with the $1 oysters and $1 tacos, with the $5 beer. Excellent deal for a night out with friends. Oysters were better the week before, but it's a deal you can't beat. Love Messhall Kitchen. Always a good time
Went after a visit to the Observatory on a Saturday night around 8:30. It turned out to be a great choice. Décor was contemporary and stylish and after dark, seemed less casual than the website shots taken during the day, which was a positive for us. Food was just as advertised: unique spins on old favorites. We had the sweet and spicy brussel sprouts , turkey/kale chili, and the roasted chicken with mushroom bread pudding. All were very imaginative and very flavorful. We also had the Cali salad which was awesome. One regret was that we chose to sit outside which was fine, but we had a large group sitting next to us that was pretty loud, and you could also hear the traffic from the street more than I anticipated. Never the less would go back in a heart beat.
Bummer experience. It was towards the end of the brunch hours, so my only guess is the wait
and kitchen staff were just over it, the hostess however was extremely lovely, so there was a strong start and just a downward spiral.
We use to go here a lot, but since we moved across town it's been awhile so we were bummed when we saw the menu changed and our favorites were no longer. So we brought it up to the waiter so seemed completely disinterested and just gave us " it must be taken off a while ago i've been here a year and never heard of it" OK got it, well my partner asked if it would be possible to still make it, which i'll be honest i can definitely see that being annoying. so with a little back and forth of my partner explaining what it was and the waiter somewhat annoyed he settled on the fried chicken sandwich and I went for the breakfast tacos.
Food came quick but unfortunately the tacos i got were extremely bland and dry, the salsa seemed to have been baked into the eggs so essentially it was a slice of avocado and a spoonful of hard scrambled eggs. Our waiter never came back to check on on us or really any wait staff came around at all for me to even ask for some hot sauce. When did come there was no "how was everything" or "can i get you anything else" - just a "will that be all?"
While I can't say it was rude or offensive service it was just extremely inattentive, so maybe it was an off day, but it was enough of a bummer i don't think we'll be going back again.
