We have eaten at Messhall dozens of times. This meal was pretty last minute and it did not disappoint- in fact it surpassed our expectations. The cocktails were perfect, the salads fresh and delicious and the Heritage Burger was a delightful mess. And the fries were hot and crispy. And the smoky ketchup. Really wonderful. Everything, including the service, was just right.

Too many dogs were brought in to the restaurant. Next time I’ll remember to sit inside where I hope dogs are not allowed.

Great place! I have been there for dinner with friends and with my family. Each time was perfect. Loved the food, drinks, and service. I haven't sat at the bar yet, but my husband and I agreed that we will go there on our next date night. It looked like a lot of fun.

The corn fritters were as good as advertised, and the fries were delicious. I gave 4 overall stars; first because the valet was friendly, and the wait staff was courteous and accommodating. However, I can't give 5 stars, because the turkey burger was dry and not seasoned. In addition, my business client's oysters were frozen.

The food was great but our food took super long to get to us. We didn’t get a follow up or any notice of where our food was and the waiter would take long for refills.

Great with kids, if your child isn't noise-sensitive like mine is. It was a bit too much for her. We still had a great time, once she got used to it!

The food was fine, but they definitely have a thing about smokey tasting preparations and that's not my favorite. Smoke was all I could taste in the corn fritters, and they recommended by waiter. My husband said his burger was good. Smokey catsup. Smokey tasting drinks. The atmosphere was loud, and the waiter very disinterested in us. Pretty meh, over all.

The menu had a wide array of choices. We ordered BBQ ribs, short ribs, Roasted chicken with a really great mushroom stuffing, a quinoa and black bean bowl, oysters and Brussel Sprouts. All were delicious. The only miss was a shrimp and grits appetizer that my husband thought was too bland. I would go back again, except the service was slow. The waitress was personable and knowledgable. I think she had too many tables and they were inside and outside. Or maybe the kitchen was slow. Could have just been an off night. The food, atmosphere and the really great drinks make it worth going back.

Went with the $1 oysters and $1 tacos, with the $5 beer. Excellent deal for a night out with friends. Oysters were better the week before, but it's a deal you can't beat. Love Messhall Kitchen. Always a good time

Went after a visit to the Observatory on a Saturday night around 8:30. It turned out to be a great choice. Décor was contemporary and stylish and after dark, seemed less casual than the website shots taken during the day, which was a positive for us. Food was just as advertised: unique spins on old favorites. We had the sweet and spicy brussel sprouts , turkey/kale chili, and the roasted chicken with mushroom bread pudding. All were very imaginative and very flavorful. We also had the Cali salad which was awesome. One regret was that we chose to sit outside which was fine, but we had a large group sitting next to us that was pretty loud, and you could also hear the traffic from the street more than I anticipated. Never the less would go back in a heart beat.

Bummer experience. It was towards the end of the brunch hours, so my only guess is the wait
and kitchen staff were just over it, the hostess however was extremely lovely, so there was a strong start and just a downward spiral.

We use to go here a lot, but since we moved across town it's been awhile so we were bummed when we saw the menu changed and our favorites were no longer. So we brought it up to the waiter so seemed completely disinterested and just gave us " it must be taken off a while ago i've been here a year and never heard of it" OK got it, well my partner asked if it would be possible to still make it, which i'll be honest i can definitely see that being annoying. so with a little back and forth of my partner explaining what it was and the waiter somewhat annoyed he settled on the fried chicken sandwich and I went for the breakfast tacos.

Food came quick but unfortunately the tacos i got were extremely bland and dry, the salsa seemed to have been baked into the eggs so essentially it was a slice of avocado and a spoonful of hard scrambled eggs. Our waiter never came back to check on on us or really any wait staff came around at all for me to even ask for some hot sauce. When did come there was no "how was everything" or "can i get you anything else" - just a "will that be all?"

While I can't say it was rude or offensive service it was just extremely inattentive, so maybe it was an off day, but it was enough of a bummer i don't think we'll be going back again.

I was on a restricted diet when I visited and I ordered something I didn’t think could be screwed up- poached eggs, homemade sausage patties and roasted potatoes. The poached eggs were watery and flavorless, sausage was incredible dry and poorly spiced and the potatoes were extremely bland and dry. My boyfriend ordered the hash and it was far better. Atmosphere was nice with the fireplaces at the tables outside on the enclosed patio. I’d give it another shot but really feel that fundamental cooking skills need to be honed at this joint.

LOVE the food. LOVE the ambiance. LOVE Mess Hall.
Came here for Dine LA and each course was more delicious than the last. Could not pick a favorite. Only issue was because we ordered Dine LA, we selected all of our courses immediately. However, that meant that both the appetizers and the main course came out directly behind each other. Unfortunately, that meant that either the server or the kitchen just brought out the food once it was inputted/made, and we ended up eating most of the main course luke warm because we were still eating the appetizers.

My only recommendation for improvement would be to time the courses better. Whether that should be the server's job to input at a certain point or the kitchen job to time it is beyond me, but it should definitely be in someone's purview. I can only imagine how much more delicious my main course would have been had I started to eat it once it arrived at the table.

Love Tuesdays here - $1 Oysters and Tacos!! Overall, this place is pretty consistent and the vibe is fun. Service is usually really good and fast. The burger is amazing!
