Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I love Mesob! I brought my team from work here for dinner, 5 of us all different ethnicities and they all loved the food, the variety
The only bump this night was the service. I think they were understaffed and very slow to open our wine, slow to take orders.
Montclair is a BYOB and the hostess gave us some BS about not putting our liquor on the table and then waiter said it was cool. I think she was in a bad mood because they were busy
But I've had so many good meals there I would give them the benefit of the doubt
The food was outstanding, no arguments about that. No alcoholic beverages sold at the restaurant but you are welcome to bring your own from outside. There is a store located right next door.
We were having a drink and they came to ask if they could bring us our bill....I was stunned as we were not ready to go. A few minutes later they took our glasses and started clearing the table. We had no idea what was going on. Later one of the ladies came to tell us that they only hold a table for 2h30mins as it’s very busy on Fridays and Saturdays. I’m assuming they thought we knew, but we didn’t and we were just so made that our table was cleared and it felt like we were being chased away.
Overall it’s a great place. Food and ambience is awesome. You must however make plans because of the 2h30 reservation rule.
The hostess was very rude when we arrived which threw us for a spin as Montclair restaurant are typically known for their warm demeanor and neighborhood feel. Fortunately the food overcompensated for her terrible attitude and poor service of our waiter who dumped appetizers on our table and tried to run off before I could ask him for shared plates. The portions although good were very overpriced.
Great food as always! Very loud and slower than normal service.
To be fair it was a nice weather evening in November so everyone was out and about. It took a while for the server to take our order and bring us our bill.
It would be nice if they put some fabric panels in the ceiling and/or on the walls to dampen the noise of all of the guests. It is hard to have a conversation with others at your table, especially if the others are over 55.
I love Ethiopian food and Mesob did not disappoint. I ordered the Vegetarian Combo and one thing was more delicious than the next. Shiro and the red lentils are my favorite, so flavorful, yum. The parking wasn't bad for Montclair. I was able to find a spot in the garage right behind Mesob off Park. It's a BYOB which is nice so that you can have an incredible meal, good wine and the price is not bad at all. Definitely going back soon.
As noted in other reviews, the service was a bit slow so be prepared for that. However, the server was helpful once she got to us and the food was amazing (and very filling)! Also, I found the callouts in the menu for dishes that required longer preparation time to be very considerate and helpful in choosing my entree.
Food was really good , service was a bit slow . We were taken to our table which was at the very corner of the restaurant and was asked to sit immediately as they felt we were blocking traffic . My friends have 2 children and they were trying to get them settled and hence it took us a bit to sit down and we thought it was rather insensitive of the hostess to rudely ask us to just sit down . Took them forever to take our order ,again kids were hungry and we wanted to get our order in to get them something to eat . Our waitress dropped my food on me and apologized but it did not seem very genuine . She just didn't seem to care . Place was extremely noisy . Food was excellent though. I would go back one more time to give them the benefit of doubt , maybe it was just a busy night and people who were mildly rude were just having a bad day .
The food, ambiance and staff are all great. I have noticed that they are under-staffed pretty often (Fridays) which happens to be a very busy time. So it is quite hard to get a servers attention and to get your food. Unfortunately, will hurt this gem of a restaurant. Otherwise, this place is great and I hope they fix that issue so I can continue enjoying this place.
Excellent food, great service.
I'd like to request that the restaurant stops playing birthday greetings at full volume on their speaker system. It disturbs the rest of us, and cheapens the atmosphere to that of Chuck-e-Cheese. Whatever happened to just singing around the table of the person celebrating? Why do the rest of us have to stop our conversation for the deafening crass music? It's almost reason NOT to eat there.
I have been to Mesob several times. While I love the food and cultural exchange, I have to say I hate the service. I always feel ignored. Ignored to the point where I have had to stand up and go over to the manager or some other server to get water, or ask where a missing items was or even the check. Once the check came they never came back to take it back. It was a good thing we paid cash and could just leave. The ONLY reason why I come back is for the food. The AYIB BEMEETMEETA is very good with just the right seasoning. I highly recommend the MEAT SAMPLER (for dinning in only), A combination of the following 5 meat entrées:
Tibs Wet (Beef), Minchet Abish Kay Wet (Beef), Minchet Abish Alicha (Beef), Ye'Beg Alicha (Lamb), Doro Tibs (Chicken); & 4 sides of vegetables, my favorite was the lamb and the MINCHET ABISH KAY WET. For sides we got the DINICH WET, BUTICHA, MISIR WET and ATKILT ALICHA, I think I loved the MISIR WET the best! If you don't get that then try the TASTE OF MESOB
2 starters, 2 beef, 1 lamb, 2 chicken, 1 seafood & 4 sides of vegetables.
2nd time at this restaurant. Awesome food! We asked for more of the light flat bread for use of grabbing the food since it runs out fast. We were told it would be refilled when it's empty. It was empty for 10 minutes before it was refilled. I would have liked the request fulfilled when i asked for it the first time.
