Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant
I've been here multiple times before & I love the food & the owner & her sister. My family always will love this place and we travel a long distance so come here. I've been to another Ethiopian restaurant in Westchester & Mesob still is way better and has a larger menu. I'm just mildly disappointed with the service, we really had to wait a long time to be seated, then a long time for water, then a long time for wine glasses & yet the restaurant wasn't completely packed. If I saw the owner that night I would've wanted to tell her myself that it felt like we were largely ignored. The food is fabulous and I always feel like this is the ultimate comfort food. I also don't love that they really squeezed the tables together, they used to have an island in the center of the restaurant and now it's as crowded with tables like a restaurant in Manhattan. I came to Montclair for some space so I don't love that I have to bump into my neighbors table to get to my chair. This may have been an off night for Mesob, but I hope the service does improve next time I come back. I will overall definitely be back.
Went there for lunch. When the menu says "1 leg" they mean "1 drumstick". Very tasty, but didn't quite fill us up.
It was a prix fixe meal on Valentine's Day. As usual, service was prompt and helpful, especially whenever more injera was needed. The sauce on the portabella mushroom appetizer was just right and the potatoes were well flavored. We both had the lamb mixed with greens and the flavor was well balanced, the lamb did not overpower the dish. All of the bean and pea based veggies were light and nicely sauced. Dessert consisted of a almond cake for me and baklava for my wife, which we enjoyed (I preferred the drier almond cake). Vegetarians have many options but meat eaters can find beef and seafood in addition to the lamb.
We loved our dinner at Mesob. We each got one entree (each came with two sides and injera) and split everything, which is a helpful way to go if you're less familiar with the cuisine, as we were. Service was efficient and the space itself is really pretty. We'd love to come back with a group so we can try even more things! I highly recommend the Doro Tibs (chicken) and then any of the sides--all of the ones we had were tasty.
Nice place to take your family, friends and business partner.
If you're never tried Ethiopian cuisine, you're in for a treat. The spices are unique and turn every course into an adventure. (Note that "spice" doesn't only mean heat. Each one adds a welcome complexity to familiar greens, starches and proteins.) Parking on a recent Friday evening was not fun, but we survived. One of the best things about Mesob is how vegetarian-friendly it is. There were two vegetarians in our party and they were impressed with the variety of plates offered to them, as well as the terrific flavors. We can't wait to return!
The food was excellent. The service was terrible... after waiting for almost 30 minutes we flagged our server to take our order and her response was 'you haven't ordered as yet!?'. My inside voice ' you are our server, did you take an order from us??' Btw, there were only 2 other tables that were occupied...
Excellent quality of food. First time here, so server could have warned that we were overordering; however, even though we couldn't finish everything, what we ate was delicious.
It was pleasant
5 star food
Good food, for lunch not too busy which was good. I asked for my food spicy and it was great.
The only issue is they try to give you privacy and don't check in enough to see if anything is needed.
Meeting friends - good good , ambience, pleasant hostess , and BYO (What's not to like:))
Warm, cozy, smells so great in this restaurant and we absolutely love the food and the whole experience. It’s one of our favorite restaurants in North Jersey!
Mesob is our favorite Ethiopian restaurant- worth the trip, delicious as always!
Great food, great service! A+
Delicious food and a very unique experience. Great time and opportunity to try something ew.
So if you want a change of pace before any activity in Montclair, try this Ethiopian place. Setting is a bit noisy but service was quite good. Food was nicely presented, fresh and flavorful. That said some important factors: 1. You eat with your hands, using pieces of injera ( sort of like rolled up crepes!) to pick up your food which has been dumped on a huge piece of injera in the center of your table 2. With no disrespect, much of it all had the same flavor profile- replete with chick peas, lentils, onion and spices. 3. Since there is no liquor license, remember to BYO 4. Unless you are used to this, ask for MILD- with extra spices on the side!
We love to have dinner here, we can order all vegan, vegetarian, or meat for all our dietary needs. Pleasant environment and service.
Wonderful food and great service!
This is an excellent restaurant. I have eaten at many Ethiopian restaurants and this is one of the best.
Mesob is a fantastic restaurant. The food, the service, and the decor capture of the authentic experience of modern Ethiopian dining. The lamb dishes are perfectly prepared. The lentil vegan dishes are scrumptious. Well done!
We never had Ethiopian fare before and quite enjoyed it. I'm not sure it would be up there with our favorite foods but a great experience , the ambiance was unique and the service was good for peak traffic time. The food was quite flavorful and prepared well. We enjoyed it and would definitely recommend Mesob to others.
From the minute we walk in to Mesob I feel comfortable, warm and love the scent and taste of the Ethiopian foods It’s truly an experience for all of the senses! Wish we could get there more often!
One of my gf’s favorite restaurants.
A treasure!! One of a few restaurants I go on a regular basis. The servers are very friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent!!!
This was my second time, and it was delicious! The staff was wonderful, the food even better.
The food was outstanding but the service sketchy. The waiter waited on the table that sat down after us first. Food was served well and in a reasonable amount of time. It was delicious. We sat for 15 minutes after we were done eating before they took our plates and waiter for fifteen minutes after that hoping for someone to offer coffee or dessert. Finally flagged down a waiter to get the check. We still would go back for the food .
Wife’s first time eating Ethiopian food and she loved it
Great food, superb service... I’ll definitely be going back again
My wife showed me this place and I loved it. We will be back many more times
$125 wasted. Food is very average and over priced. Some dishes were too bland and tasteless. One of the things we ordered was dinner for 3 for about $80 and the quantity of the veg dishes was very small I.e probably 2 table spoons each. I will never go there again.
Great food and atmosphere. As always. Will be back soon.
I loved the food in Mesob. Would come again. It was super busy. The waiter who served us was good but we wanted to order something more later but none of them would even look at our table or would come and ask if everything was fine. We just let it go and had our dessert somewhere else.
Delicious rich flavors of Ethiopia!
I continue to enjoy Mesob and believe it is one of the best culinary experiences in Montclair!
Delicious selection for vegetarians & vegans, and many options for meat eating friends. Just be careful to get a separate plate!!
Love this restaurant. Food is consistently good and great service. Very relaxing BYOB atmosphere.
Great food with a wonderful service. I went there with my friend on Friday night and was very pleased. If you like to try new things and flavors this definitely a place to go.
The food was unique and excellent; the portions were perfect. You can order some dishes mild, medium or spicy, but the medium was less than "medium" so if you like a bit of a kick, go for the spicy! A fun place. BYOB
Food is always magical. Although I miss the beautiful “bar island”. The open space makes it look more like a cafeteria.
