Meso Maya - Downtown Dallas Ratings and Reviews
Excellent food. Embarrassing service. Received one drink in 90 minutes despite repeated requests and reminders. It was a busy Friday night but unnecessarily slow service. Table was too small to fit two plates and a basket of chips. Loved the well prepared dishes.
Good, near authentic Mexican cuisine. A fun, casual option in the Uptown area. Service is great despite the crowd. Nice outside seating option. It’s sister restaurant , La Ventana (outside in the back), is also true gem. Great tacos served at the window. Very casual but cool outdoor seating area.
Parking was horrible. They brought me a dirty spoon that looked like someone and just eaten off of it. You could literally see where they had pulled it from there mouth. I can't believe it made it to my table and no one noticed it. I viewed the menu before going and decided on the budin azteca. What came to the table looked nothing like the menu pictures. It honestly made me somewhat nauseated when I first saw it. The person I was with ordered the same thing and tried hers and thought it was good. I'm not sure if she didn't want to be rude because I had suggested and taken her there for her birthday, or because we got two different versions of the dish but I was not pleased. Anyone who knows me knows that I hate the idea of wasting food, and the only time I don't finish my meal is when it's not enjoyable. Most of this dish was left on my plate. I won't be going back nor would I recommend this restaurant. It wasn't even worth mentioning to anyone else that we went. The reviews online were mixed and I should have erred on the side of caution and went to our usual hole-in-the-wall restaurant for our Mexican food.
This was the second time going to the restaurant and good thing we reserved, the first time it took over 1 hour to get a table but the service was awesome. Totally worth the wait!... 2nd time our waiter was good but was a bit rude when the check came. I asked if he could split it because we were all paying separately it was a party of 7. I understand that it would take more time but never did he ask us at the beginning before ordering, he had more tables so I got that, but the way he answered saying we didn't anything at the beginning, made it seem like it was too much to ask. Aside from that it was great.
We had reservations so that worked great and our server was very attentive. However, my food was cold and not all that good. I had eaten at another location previously and it was great there so I was surprised by the food quality at this location. It was a busy Saturday night though; perhaps during a slower time, it would have been better.
The food was absolutely marvelous. The chips and salsa where exceptional. Chips where thin and light and the salsa was of the chipotle variety and "smokey ". The enchiladas were among the best that I have eaten anywhere. The service was not bad but placing our drink order or getting refills or even ordering seemed a little slow. Once the order was in, the food was delivered promptly. Despite service being a little slow, I would recommend.....simply an amazing meal.
Meso Maya is a big restaurant in rooms with dramatic high ceilings. It has a pleasing buzz when crowded. The service was energetic and (mostly) usefully directive. The guacamole was good, although I like those restaurants that make it on the table for maximum freshness. The ceviche was appropriately zingy. The mains were ok without being really memorable. They were a little bland when you really want the spice and freshness to come through.
This place puts to shame every Mexican restaurant I have tried in my home state of California. The service and delivery of food to your table is seemingly instantaneous, and it's worth the nonexistent wait! I am a devotee of pozole and try it everywhere I travel, including New Mexico, and the pozole verde here was the BEST I have ever had. Wowee. Our main dishes were great, and notably even the accompanying rice and beans were excellent instead of the usual throw-aways. We made an Opentable reservation and were seated immediately while a crowd of folks were waiting outside, so use OT here and show up on time.
A great way to start is with the flavorful salsa and chips delivered direct to your table. Skip the guac as it's pretty basic and could use a little heat. For a drink with a kick, try la Novela. El Pastor (white sea bass) is uneventful. Instead opt for the Del Mar enchiladas, a unique combination of lobster, adobo shrimp, with avocado. This restaurant gets really crowded at prime times. Even though we had a reservation, we stood at the door waiting for 20 minutes before being seated.
