Merlo on Maple Ratings and Reviews
Very solid Italian spot.
Great food...salads, antipasto, artichoke tart, spaghetti carbonara, homemade gelato
Friendly service, adequate wine list (the only thing I'd like to see upgraded a bit.
Lovely setting, and quiet enough to carry on a conversation with you dinner guests.
We will definitely be back...maybe to try the 8 course tasting menu.
Every time it exceeds our expectations. The figs with prosciutto was sooo good! The handmade gluten free pasta tastes like the real pasta! I will only eat pasta from Merlo. The specials each week and the exceptional service keep us coming back! Highly recommend for northern Italian food at its best!
my wife and I go every year on our trip to Chicago. great food ( my wife has problems with oils and preservatives many restaurants use-no such problem here)
housed in a charming brownstone.
all homemade food and wonderfully prepared.
very good value for the money
This place was referred to us from ...another restaurant. And wow! Italian food like it should be. From the moment you arrive in this old house, you feel at home. Small quiet bar on the left opening on a private patio overlooking the street. You see everything, no one sees you! Then the dinning room downstairs. Quiet but very vibrant at the same time. Just enough light. Tables are well spread out. No one is too close. Kept the food for last. The food is simply the way Italian food should be. As the first time in an Italian restaurant, I always try pasta first. Bolognese. One word - PERFECTION. The service was great. Every staff knows about the food being prepared.
We will go back!!!! Thanks to everyone at Merlo on Maple who made our anniversary special !
Have enjoyed meals over the years and this was an off night. Service was good but the server spoke so quickly in an Italian accent that I felt like I needed my translation guide with me. Tried the bow tie pasta for the first time and will not repeat it. Pastas have changed with some favorites no longer on the menu and the quality is not there in the recent visits.
We celebrated our 31st anniversary at one of favorite restaurants. The food was spot on as always. We didn't enjoy the lower level table as much as the upstairs. There was a large party next to ours which was quite loud and took away somewhat from the usual romantic ambiance.
By far the best Northern Italian food I have had in the US. You can tell that they truly are committed to the best in cuisine and service. My family ate here and although my teenage girls were skeptical after our time in Chicago they said this was hands down their favorite meal!
The restaurant was a disappointment. We had been receiving emails from them on a weekly basis so we decided to have a special anniversary dinner at Merlo on Maple. Both of us had a special - I had the polenta with mushrooms and my wife had steak. Neither of us could finish the meal. The polenta was very salty and the steak was tough and contained a lot of grisle. We won't return. It was way too expensive for the quality of the meal.
The experience left me very disappointed. The restaurant's overall atmosphere is very cool/ romantic. It is a romantic spot that I thought would be nice for my wife's birthday. I thought that the food was very authentic and well prepared, however, there were a few things that caused us to have a negative experience. I believe that the prices were outrageous. We went there for the authentic pasta as my wife likes pasta. The waiter informed us that if we wanted pasta as are main dish he suggests ordering a portion and a half. So in total we spend $88 on two pasta dishes that were still small portions (for being "entree sized" portions). I was given a pasta dish that I didn't even order and when I brought that up to the waiter he made no attempt to correct his mistake. We also spent $36 on glass of wine each. The pasta was good, however, I wish I would have received what I actually ordered. We also got gelato and we were both happy with that choice. I just feel that $150+ for 2 glasses of wine, 2 small portions of pasta and 1 gelato dessert that we split was a bit too pricey. I was hoping for a great experience for my wife's birthday, however, instead it was quite the opposite. I don't normally rant like this... I knew it would be a little expensive, however, I did not think I would be that overpriced.
Great find. A wonderful fine dining experience. Creative menu perfectly executed. Great tastes, carefully crafted flavors. Warm, helpful staff. You leave feeling like family. The setting is an old brownstone with several rooms, nicely decorated and well cared for. Definitely a "keeper".
This was our first visit to Merlo's and it was absolutely wonderful. The service was spectacular, the food excellent and the wine list outstanding. My only disappointment is that I don't have time in my schedule to have another meal at Merlo before we leave Chicago on this trip.
I went to the restaurant in person the day before our reservation to request a special table. When we arrived, the table was taken and it was not because their tables were filled. The request was in their computer but the waiter simply sat someone else at the table. The manager was very apologetic but then the waiter said it was his fault before he speared for a long period of time. a young girl who was busing tables was great at retrieving items we ordered that were not delivered and gave us the only smiles we received during the dinner. The waiter appeared again but spent time socializing with another table while we were waiting for our check.
This has been our favorite restaurant and we'd like to return again but I'll hesitate.
Merlo on Maple is the perfect place for a quiet, relaxed evening with friends, colleagues or family who enjoy fine Italian cuisine. The wait staff is knowledgeable and helpful, low key but very attentive and accommodating. When out of town friends visit we always go to Merlo on Maple because time is precious and we want to enjoy every moment.
