Meritage - St. Paul

Second time I've been to Meritage - this time was for brunch. We had terrible service - waiter practically threw things on the table and ran away. One person in our group finally said something to him and of course after that, the service improved. Ridiculous! Very mixed feelings about going back - the food was fine, not great.
This was my fourth time at Meritage. Always a great experience. I highly recommend it for all occasions
Our dinner was outstanding--food and service. We had made an early reservation and were seated in the the least noisy place in the restaurant which helped. Our server asked if we were attending a performance and made certain he accomodated that time frame.
If there were a way to tone down the noise and still retain the ambience mit would be ideal. I had a fabulous duck entree and my companion had osso buco. We were very happy with the
entrees and the accompaniments!
No longer live in St. Paul, so was delighted to find that Meritage has expanded. Nice zinc bar and lovely outdoor. Nice additions to an already very good restaurant.
Meritage was wonderful. It was within walking distance of our hotel and set in a lovely area opposite the old federal building. We liked it so much for dinner that we went back a second time for brunch. The atmosphere was inviting, service was excellent and our meals were delicious. I would definitely visit again.
slow service, costly for what you get and VERY noisy. We could not hear each other. only 1 salad choice - surprising.
This is our favorite Twin Cities restaurant. The food and service are consistently excellent. Their Friday night lobster special is the best lobster I have ever had - it melts in your mouth!
Nico is by far the most dedicated restaurant manager in the twin cities
Dining room was quiet, but it also was not full. Service was good but a bit aloof. Food was good, well plated, and timely. For some reason I can't quite put my finger on, I would not be quick to recommend this to others. Something about the whole experience seemed a bit forced, or cold.
The food and wine list are excellent, with the oyster bar a real treat. Don't go unless you're planning on spending quite a bit. There service issues - a huffy waiter, hot glasses for cocktails, a couple of mistakes with the order. The food is interesting, innovative, the wine list awesome. However, with a cost of almost $300 for 2 people, you'd think they'd try harder to make it an EXPERIENCE.
Meritage is a great place to dine. They have captured the essence of fine dinning, exceptional food and service. I appreciated the visit from the chef, a personal touch that was much appreciated. I whole heartly recommend Meritage. (Oyster selection is phenomenal)
Thank you for a great evening.
Large plates, small portions, high prices. Noisy. Interesting menu. Food was very good. Great service.
Slow service...15 minutes after sitting down for them to take our drink order...
Had the lamb shank marginal. Friend had pork tenderloin is was exceptional. Lalmb needed some spice or something. Service was ok at best. Appetizers great.
The food was fine, but having been to most of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities. Why can't I find an excellent French/European restaurant!? Way overpriced!
My husband & I went to Meritage for our anniversary. We had the 7 course tasting menu w/wine pairings. It was fantastic! The food was beautifully prepared and the wines went perfectly with each course. The timing of each dish was just right and the portions weren't too big or too small. Our server Andy was very attentive but didn't intrude. It was a wonderful meal in a special restaurant.
Great food and service, as always - we appreciate the owner/manager (?) and the chef coming to the table to talk and ask for our comments. The menu has a nice selection of old favorites and new things to try - it's not terribly lengthy, but we always have several entrees that we have a hard time choosing between. All three of our meals were outstanding, and the desserts as well.
One of our favorites! The oyster bar is to die for!
Very LOUD, hard to carry on a conversation with guests.! The wait staff is very knowledgeable and helpful but a little lacking in personality (maybe the French influence???) The steaks and lamb were exceptional, the veal was a little overcooked. Overall...overrated.
Good food but noise makes conversation difficult
We arrived early and got sat by the patio right away by a host that's full of character. What a great spot for dining and people watching! Service was excellent as our awesome waiter was able to accommodate to make our deadline to catch a show at Ordway. We started off with Pimm's Provencial, which was so refreshing, tasty and herbacious! The Lobster Po Boy was excellent and so refreshing for such a hot day. They didn't skimp on the lobster for sure. The Croque Madame was good but a little too heavy for me. They Mornay on the sandie was a little too much. Although the Bernaise could use a little salt, the Pomme Frites were excellent! We split a bottle of French wine and the wine service was excellent as well. We'll definitely come back!
Excellent restaurant, best in St Paul by far........
Average. May or may not go again. Service was slow and wrong. She brought out the wrong dish to me at first, then took it away to give to another table. Then brought my correct dish out.
Always amazingly good food; love the expanded bar area-intersting champagne cocktail menu; the tuna tartare tacos are really unique with the taro root shell. Moules frites have a nice smoky flavor from the pancetta. High ceilings and windows give the place a bright, open feeling w/o losing the sense of coziness from small tables. Asked the server to take things slow for us and he cheerfully accommodated; never felt rushed. Chef Klein also walked thru the dining rooms and checked in with diners--nice touch!
I've been to Meritage a few times and my most recent visit must have been an off night. The service was very slow to start, we sat for a long time before we were offered menus or beverages. The FoieGras which is usually fantastic, fell flat this time. Our serving was an odd piece that must have been a scrap from the end of a lobe and was under-seasoned. Just sort of sloppy cooking in general. Our Steak & Halibut entrées were good regardless.
I have always had great food at Meritage in the past. I think they do an outstanding job with their Oyster selection, and likely have the best french fries in the MSP area. I would probably recommend going to Meritage for a quick bite before a Wild game or the Theatre rather than a long dinner.
I love the Meritage! Their menu changes by season so it never gets boring. Their choice of oysters are phenomenal. I have been here for many occasions and have always had great food and service but the last 2 times I came there within the same week, the service was not as good as it use to be. I had to wait very long for almost everything and they forgot to bring my daughter's packed food to go. A little disappointed in the service but it's not horribly bad, could be just that week or that waitress. I still would come back for their food any day. Great Chefs!
Once again, one of our fave places to dine ever...
Did the 5-course chef's selection with wine flights, with addition of oysters for a start.
Oysters were the freshest I have tasted in the cities.
All courses were interesting, attractive and delicious; quantities just right.
The wait-staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgable.
Nice touch was the was the chef's visit to our table.
Not inexpensive, but worth it.
The food is inventive and reliably good. The service is knowledgeable and friendly but service can be a little 'spotty'
LIMITED MENU-DISAPPOINTEDM THAT THE MENU WAS NOT FILLED WITH FRENCH OFFERINGS
WOULD RECOMMEND WITH UNDERSTANDING THAT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FRENCH RESTURANT, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE.
Great flavors and menu option. Tastings and pairings outstanding.
Russell Klein's cooking is sublime.
The lunch menu disappoints. It offers little variety and some of the best items are missing, like the French Onion soup. I ordered the Lobste Roll and it was over seasoned, causing it to taste like grass.
Service so-so. Food good and lots of it. Very noisy, no acoustic damping at all with high ceiling.
Best restaurant in town by far!
The service here is expert. Ask for a window seat. Feels like Paris. Had Oysters Meritage, Pom Frites (both excellent) and four entries: Composition of Spring Peas was inspired-pea cannelloni was great, but overall portion size was a little small. Halibut perfectly cooked-aspargus puree was tasty compliment. Stars out of the four we had were 1) the scallops - melt-in-your-mouth perfection-combo of the black olives and bresaola was fabulous and 2) the lamb shank-huge, meaty, wonderful lamb jus with fennel scented spring veggies-perfect! Go on Sunday-wine is reasonably priced at $12-18 per bottle. Desserts: creme brulee, chocolate mousse were adequate, but the entries were the absolute best part of this experience.
Superb food and service again. Always a pleasure to visit Meritage, and look forward to the next reservation.
Wonderful dinner. I had the asparagus soup, veal, and espresso pot de creme and berries ($3 ea). Each was done perfectly. It was one of the best meals I have ever had, and our guests raved as well. Service was very good, and we were out in plenty of time to get to our show at the Ordway. Russell stopped by to say hello as well. We were treated very well and appreciated the window seat....often 4 women are seated at the cruddy tables, but that did not happen, and we were grateful and will go again, as a result. It is rather loud, so conversations were a bit hard...then again, our mouths were full anyway. All in all, a wonderful dinner.
Had a fabulous brunch for a special celebration. The food and service is amazing.
Great food, great service. Just wish they would serve a small basket of bread upon being seated while perusing the menu. Meritage did that when they first opened. The bread was fantastic, a special touch. Can a basket of bread cost that much? The wait staff now says there are too many people with gluten allergies to provide that introductory bread basket. Try again!!! It was just a special treat which I think was very welcoming. Since I also love a glass of wine before my meal, it also enhanced my enjoyment of the wine. Please reconsider. Also the menu item--bread/butter-- $4.50 is really outrageous.
