We were graciously welcomed to the Meritage, served a great omelette and eggs benedict; coffee and juice were regularly topped off, the waitperson was very competent. However, at the end of our brunch, we were informed that this was the last day of the Meritage; it would closing at the end of brunch. Thus, I can't recommend it to diners looking for a brunch with a view of the SF Bay.
Good food amidst an awesome view. Prices are quite high especially for corkage and the wine prices are marked up really high.
We had a wonderful dinner. It was a marvelous experience all around.
Unfortunately, they are closing - it was their last night of operation. We are hoping that when they reopen in a few years, the new restaurant will be as good or even better than this one.
Lovely so sad it is closing..Food was good...everything else was amazing..
I chose this venue for a new year's eve brunch because I wanted a table with a view. The hotel is a lovely spot. The food is average barely. The best items were the made-to-order omelet and waffle. Fruit not at its best, scrambled eggs probably powdered, potatoes over cooked, limited selection of pastries. Even the coffee was the end of the pot. The service was the most attentive when it came to paying the bill. Flowers were pretty - but most of the vases had dead roses and greenery. Nothing special. The Claremont has the potential to be quite spectacular but has a long way to go - at least for the brunch. I won't return until the reviews improve.
This Sunday Brunch used to be fantastic, it is the poorest "brunch" I've ever experienced. This is now the equivalent of a free breakfast at a Courtyard, or similar. Horrible ! But they've retained the $40+ per person for this travesty.
We are very sad that the Meritage is closing. Limewood is pretty bad—we’ve eaten there several times. You’ve got to bring in new chefs and improved food.
Disappointing! I feel as if the chef/cook staff has already ‘mentally’ exited...
I was disappointed that Open Table didn't make it clear that we would be having breakfast, not lunch, and that we were reserving the latest time slot for the morning. When we were seated, the hostess left us four menus for the party of five and walked away. The waiter got the order mixed up a bit, and we were a bit hurried at the end of the meal. However, the dining room is lovely; the view was amazing, the food was very good, and our traditional holiday lunch was delightful because of the company. Parking is a little bit pricey as well.
I paid $25 for 2 poached eggs, wheat toast, a glass of OJ, and a cup of coffee. Despite having reserved in advance, we were seated in a corner by the butler's pantry. Our food came late. My poached eggs were slightly overcooked, but my companion's eggs (in a benedict) were cooked through and through. Her dish was supposed to come with hash browns, but they were actually roasted potatoes. They weren't bad, but they were not hash browns. Finally, our waiter was flummoxed when we gave him 2 c cards and asked to split the bill. He said we'd have to wait for the manager because he did not know how to operate the computer. We asked to take some food away & he said he would bring us a box. I waved down another waiter who handled our bill and boxed up our take-away for us. I love the Claremont and usually have a good experience there, but this was an unfortunate exception. And the breakfast was way overpriced, even for the location.
Lovely! Wonderful service which is so hard to come by these days. The view and the property are beautiful. I am so thankful that the Fairmont took over this historic property.
We thought it was too expensive for the quality of the food.
Food not as good as Sonoma Mission Inn, but really festive for Christmas brunch
When we booked the reservation there was no indication that it would be a buffet only. When seated, we were surprised to learn that only buffet was available, no regular menu. There was no menu or signage or anything to indicate what kind of food the buffet included, or the price, which was an outrage: $109 per person, merry Xmas eve to you! We got our food and sat down to eat, to discover that every single dish was stone cold. Not just unwarm, but literally cold to the touch. When a manager person came over to ask how everything was going, we mentioned the cold food and she went away to check on it. She returned a few minutes later to let us know the chef had replaced either the sterno burners or the food, we couldn't make out which. But by that time we'd picked around our plates and weren't feeling like going back for seconds, possibly warmer than the first round. When we received the bill, $327 for three people, we were very surprised that nothing at all had been comped. My very polite partner went over to the manager lady, quietly asked to speak with her outside the restaurant so as not to make a scene. She said we weren't looking for our entire bill to be comped, but that she could make SOME kind of effort to take the sting out of the very price-gougey holiday buffet price, when all 3 of us would be leaving STILL HUNGRY, and feeling extremely disappointed in our dining experience. Manager lady (Fabina?) just stared blankly and acted as if she had never before had to deal with a dissatisfied customer. She was clearly lacking in hospitality industry experience. She finally came back to our table and presented a new bill with $80 discounted--not even the full price of one buffet meal. We will never dine at the Meritage ever again, and encourage others to skip this place too. Boo for cold food, overpriced food, and inept management. Bah humbug!
The Meritage Christmas Eve Dinner Buffet was excellent! Took my mum who had come in for Christmas from the UK. It was amazing as usual! The food was to die for and the service was impeccable. If your looking for a wow place this is it !
Always a joy to eat at the Claremont Hotel through the years. Love having breakfast before Cal football games, afternoon tea, and fine dining on special occasions. My parents spent their wedding night there in September 1950 and even my sister and her husband in January 1976. We have taken people and family into the Claremont Hotel and they enjoy the view of the San Francisco Bay. Sunset is lovely as well. We cherish all the memories at the Claremont Hotel and glad to have known servers (waiters, helpers, bartenders, hosts/hostess, bell helpers) there in the dining room. They make us feel special.
My friend and I have enjoyed Meritage. The food is excellent, and it is one of the few restaurants quiet enough for conversation. We are devastated that it is closing.
Meritage was closing so we asked for Mimosas to take over to the daytime/lunch cafe for a special luncheon. It took them 20 minutes to make Mimosas and I wasted that time away from my party waiting at the coffee bar for the Mimosas.
Restaurant is closing
Outrageous price for brunch $110.00 and food was ok not great
Sad because it has one of the best views anywhere
Hotel recently remodeled and decorated beautifully
Lots of people staying there but the restaurant fails
We went for my wife's birthday dinner with two other couples. We appreciated the amazing view, and that the tables are well-spaced. We were able to celebrate (fairly loudly) without feeling like we were annoying the other diners. Very good food, and great service!
Worst experience we’ve had...totally see why they’re going out of business.
a great place for a family celebration with both young people and older people
Great views in this historic hotel and restaurant.
I was saddened to hear the brunch buffet is ending after December 2017.
The dining experience met all of our expetications.
The staff was courteous and went above and beyond to meet our dining needs.
Very disappointing. Not worth the money at all. Loved their brunch and had a good experience for our wedding there ,but the dinner fell short. Appetizers were good and dessert was good, but entrees were skimpy and not special at all for the price.
So sad to learn restaurant will soon be closing
Hotel of that sort want to keeep a nice dining room
What’s up it’s coportate?
Great place - food was great, service was great and facilities were great. The only thing I would say to adjust is to turn the lighting down so the outside view would be easier to see.
Another great meal with excellent service. We have celebrated all 20 anniversaries here.
We were looking for a nice and relaxing place in the East Bay Area to have brunch with the family the day after Thanksgiving. We selected the Meritage based on a recommendation.
The Claremont hotel was stunning and had that old world elegance. Great view and a relaxed environment. There were eleven of us and we ordered a full range of items - corn beef hash, eggs Benedict, blueberry pancakes, etc. The food was excellent albeit pricey. However, the beverages were a disappointment given the prices. The orange juice was not fresh squeezed (Tropicana?) and the coffee lacked aroma.
Despite the beverages, we enjoyed our branch and the hotel.
We celebrated Thanksgiving at Meritage. The ambiance was beautiful, and the service was excellent. But for $120/person, we expected much better food quality. Many of the buffet items tasted stale, uninspired, and underseasoned. In particular, the desserts were a disaster. The pumpkin pie, which should have been a standout for Thanksgiving, was virtually tasteless. The cookies seemed like they came from a supermarket. Overall, the food was a major disappointment.
While we enjoyed the setting, and all the staff were professional and friendly, we will not be coming back to Meritage.
Meritage used to exude class. It was the kind of place where you could take a business associate or a date, or celebrated a birthday or anniversary, knowing that you would be treated well from start to finish. The food is still good, but the service was informal nearly to the point of rudeness, and the overall experience no longer justifies the excessive prices. Other than love you, I really can't imagine why anyone would go there for dinner.
They stopped serving their famous Sunday brunch without notification. They are serving an overpriced mediocre breakfast with horrible service. The restaurant also seemed to attract very loud people striving to be noticed at the Claremont. An enormous disappointment.
Enjoyed the breakfast and fabulous views but was disappointed they discontinued the brunch Buffet.
Unfortunately, we ordered the seafood platter and spent the next 24+ hours suffering.
We are two strapping/healthy 40-50 somethings in our prime with NO allergies whatsoever.
I emailed the Meritage at 4:30 in the AM (following the meal) to warn them to look into the matter in hopes this fate would not befall another. I followed-up again with email to the Meritage again on the following morning. 8 days later I have yet to receive any response...
Apparently, I have an opportunity for contact with this "opentable" portal; I do not expect any response. In any case, the attempt to prevent another from this fate has failed. Or has it?
In my last email I stated that I would not be dissuaded from dining there again (But, I would not order any seafood) alas, this lack of response and/or carefully or their patrons has caused me to rethink a return there any time soon. I would not recommend this restaurant.
I love the Claremont for Sunday brunch. Good variety of food. And the view is amazing!
This was our first time here and it won't be our last. We had a table with a great view the service was the best we have had in a long while.
great 'wedge' salad. great octopus. dry-as-dust halibut -- we showed it to waiter who took it to chef and it was taken off the bill. ok sorbets. nice wines.
Our food was very good. Our waiter was always rushing and rushed off before we were able
To get questions fully answered. Would request different seating. Too close to kitchen door.
We truly did enjoy our time though.
The halibut was way overcooked and we suspect it was prepared and delivered in error to the table next to ours, then held in a warming oven for the next unsuspecting order - which, unfortunately was our table. Very poor, disappointing meal service for such high prices. We will not be returning.
I can't say enough about this venue. Service was wonderful. Food was excellent. We had a wonderful romantic time. Rather than bore you with details, simply take my word for it - put this restaurant into your rotation.
