The nearest BART station is Rockridge, approximately 1.5 miles. Guests can take a taxi from BART or board the #49 AC Transit bus and disembark at the corner of Ashby & Claremont Ave. The Concierge desk at the Claremont Hotel can order a taxi for you when you are ready to head home.

Meritage offers two spectacular rooms for private gatherings of 10-50 people. The Meritage Private Dining Room seats up to 50 guests while the Alumni Room caters up to 32 guests. Both offer great wines, farm fresh food and spectacular views of San Francisco Bay.

The halibut was way overcooked and we suspect it was prepared and delivered in error to the table next to ours, then held in a warming oven for the next unsuspecting order - which, unfortunately was our table. Very poor, disappointing meal service for such high prices. We will not be returning.
Four of us had a very pleasant Sunday brunch. All of the food on the buffet was tasty, the dining room is very pretty, we had a nice view by the window and there was ample selection. I wouldn't say it was the best Sunday brunch buffet I have gone to, but overall it met our expectations. The selection is not huge, but it had what these buffets normally have, such as omelet station, ham and roast beef, several salads and main course, dim sum, smoked salmon, etc. I did like the way they had the desserts: each one was a miniature, so you could sample many different ones and they were all good.
It was an 80th birthday and we went for the food and the service. We were not disappointed. A lovely sunset view of Berkeley/Oakland, beautiful night--parking is gated with self- and valet parking--with an adjacent night spot all situated in the lovely Claremont Hotel. Meritage is a place for an extended stay of a meal--not for a bite and dash--sometimes expectedly slow to relinquish the works of art. And enjoy the hotel. The food can be high end and justifiably the price. The service is personal--and worth every bit of a large tip. I was a bit confused about how to put together courses but our waiter helped--that is, the items can be large helpings so you don't want to overdo the order to leave room for dessert.
We enjoyed our experience at The Claremont and having dinner at The Meritage was the icing on the cake!
Our server John was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. He made suggestions and we had a fabulous time enjoying the beautiful view. We especially liked that we could talk to each other and hear without a noisy restaurant. Very intimate setting.
My husband started with the oysters. He always loves the west coast fare and liked that they served a few from the east coast too. Fresh.
I had the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were huge! Cooked to perfection and the Bloody Mary sauce was exceptional.
We shared a ceasar salad which the kitchen split for us. Very classic and tasty.
For our entrees my husband ordered the halibut, again cooked perfectly and served with a delicious sauce.
I had the scallops. They were swimming in a very flavorful broth with fresh clams and were silky smooth. So delicious!
So glad our server John suggested the chocolate soufflé. It was out of this world. We were celebrating my husbands birthday and John brought out a tray of chocolate covered strawberries on a happy birthday plate. Nice touch. A wonderful way to end the evening as we watched the picturesque sunset fade.

We had breakfast there the next morning and the avocado toast is to die for! You must try it.
A beautiful dining room in a great property in a grand old landmark hotel. I noted it was my wife's birthday and that was acknowledged by the waiter who was very nice!
Nothing else was done. No candle even in the chocolate soufflé we ordered for dessert. We had an early reservation and were not offered a window seat.
We informed our waiter of a tomato allergy and that we needed to be sure to order food without tomato or tomato sauces. He checked and assured us the lobster appetizer was ok as was the veal chop. We ordered those. He recommended the veal which was cooked in the French terminal bath and then seared.
About fifteen minutes later a very nice hostess came by and said she understood the dietary restriction and unfortunately the oyster sauce had tomato. OK, omit the sauce. And, the veal had a tomatoes sauce. Seating us in an empty dining room despite a reservation had taken ten minutes so we were now eager for food and did not want to redo the order.
The lobster was served cold on a beautiful bed of shaved ice and was beautifully cooked. Three heart leaves of romain lettuce accompanied it with what could have been a bit of mayonnaise. They had no alternative sauce.
The veal was. It medium rare as ordered but took a good 25 minutes post finishing the lobster to arrive. It was a classic perfect medium cook which for veal is a bad plan. It was tough and clearly had spent extra time somewhere. The best they could do for a sauce was a bit of a vinegar based sauce they use for the octopus item. Not a great compliment to veal (sold at "market
So, to help out the Fairmont that has taken over the property: one tablespoon butter: one shallot finely chopped, one clove garlic finely chopped. Two pinches felt ground flour, a pinch of salt a dash of pepper and half glass of red wine, a half cup of water or meat broth or chicken broth. Who is managing the floor? Service was terrible; no one (hostess, buses, servers) seemed to be on the same page. We waited too long for menus, water, drinks, ordering, and especially the meal. This place seems stuck in the 80s. Needs some updating and sprucing up. Won't be back.
Meritage was nice. Perhaps a little pricey for the portions and staff available that night to assist us. Service was off to a slow start but improved after a conversation. It was a Wednesday night so I can understand this in part. Food was great but a little over-priced. With considerable pricing, ALL things need to be on point. All in all, it was a good experience and I'd go back. Atmosphere was nice and dark and offered views of Berkeley and S.F. in the distance.
One of a few places that still does a weekend buffet brunch. Would be nice if it was Saturday and Sunday because long waits for reservations with just Sunday. Great if you score a window table for the view. No raw oysters this visit like they had on Mother's Day. Varied menu offerings allows everyone to find something they like.
I have had brunch and dinner at Meritage several times. It's a favorite among my group of girls friends. We thoroughly enjoyed our brunch and later migrated to the lounge for small plates and cocktails. Yes, it's pricey but in my opinion well worth it! Thank you Zachary for being so attentive and so amazing! Cheers! Of course we will be back!

I took my Husband out for a Birthday brunch our experience was superb. Thank you for the special birthday amenity.
Great classic hotel, wonderful views, good food, decent wine list, but $48 for a thin 3/8 inch ala carte slice of Prime Rib is not worthy of this restaurant. Service was fantastic. They need to increase their portion size on the main course to get me back more than once a year. They could also use some additional fish options, sea bass, halibut , etc.
Quite an outing for my Mothers' Birthday! Quite proud that I selected and completed the visit to this great Hotel. I would highly recommend the Claremont for a special occasion or special event. Enjoyable and well worth the time spent! Bravo Claremont and Meritage!! Encore!
The food was good, but I think it's time restaurants like Meritage offer good vegetarian options that don't depend on cheese and other high calorie ingredients. More than one vegetarian option would be a big improvement. I think the options overall are somewhat limited and very pricey. The view and ambiance are very nice but the food matters too.
They were awesome! It was my friends birthday, which I informed them of, and they brought out free mimosas and a dessert with a candle in it for her. The service and food was excellent. Sat by the window with a wonderful view and we will definitely be back in the future.
The view is worth the visit alone. We ate a sunset, and it seemed like almost every table had a great view. But the food was also excellent.
We came because we were staying overnight at the Claremont. But I would come here again just for dinner and the view!
