Merchants Pub and Plate Ratings and Reviews
The food was really good and so was our service for the most part. The only part that took away from the evening a bit was having a server who wanted to share too much of his own personal taste of wine, food, etc. When I asked about one particular bottle of wine I received a very lengthy explanation that was not necessary. But over all was a wonderful experience and we will return.
Merchant's is a terrific place to have a drink, some appetizers, and stick around for a fabulous dinner. The food is consistently both creative and great and seems to get better each time I eat there. Friendly and efficient wait staff, nice atmosphere, and wonderful food. What more could you ask for? Definitely one of Lawrence's best.
It is rare to see a restaurant offer steaks (or anything else) prepared sous vide. Imagine my delight! Everything was superb and the steak, of course, was melt-in-your mouth tender. The combination of good food and good friends will make this indelible visit.
This was a birthday gathering and we were there for brunch. Unfortunately, everything was lukewarm; crab cakes were cold and overcooked. One of the group ordered a bloody mary and it wasn't tasty either. On the upside, the waiter was quite nice and brought some bread pudding with a candle in it to help celebrate our sister's birthday.
Merchant's was highly rated and my wife had dined here with family previously with great results. It seemed a fitting place for our 23rd anniversary but I was wrong. Made reservations and ensured they knew it was a special occasion. Showed up on time to be greeted by a hostess going the extra mile for a potential customer on the phone. The hostess never put the call on hold, or checked us in for our reservation, and after 10 min of standing there... waiting... a waitress attempted to seat us next to the noisy kitchen. The restaurant was approximately at 30% capacity on a Wednesday evening and they could have seated us anywhere. We requested better seating and they sat us next to a window near the front door (wife kept her coat on). The waitress was very pleasant and attentive and the crab cakes we're phenomenal. However, our scallops were undercooked, seasoned oddly and not seared well. The ambiance was nice but the wine was over priced and we regretted not having gone to the Basil Leaf on 6th instead, or just having stayed home to cook our own special meal. Not sure why the restaurant was so highly rated but it wasn't worth the 30 min drive and I would not recommend to friends, nor will I return any time soon!
My date and I were looking forward to enjoying Merchants Four Course 'Chef Table' Menu with wine pairings, and while the food was up to expectations, our somewhat inept waiter substantially diminished the experience.
In addition to several smaller blunders, the waiter served the wrong wines with one of the courses, ruining the wine and food pairing sequence, as we had to wait an inordinate amount of time before he could retrieve the correct wines from the bar. We finished the course before the appropriate wine choices showed up, then we were immediately served the next course. "Great, so where are the wine pairings for *this* course?" I queried. More waiting while our server consulted the bartenders to figure it out.
While Merchants did not appear to be unusually busy, the waiter generally made us feel rushed, grabbing our plates without warning in one instance, and before we had finished the desert course asked if we were ready for the check, without the offer of anything else such as coffee or tea. Coffee would have been nice, but rather than continue to suffer the poorly trained waiter I paid the $150 tab and we left in search of coffee and better service.
I chose this spot to meet up with friends after a KU basketball game. I would recommend reservations, which we did have, and we were seated right away. Our group had 2 diners with food allergies (gluten and peanut) and we were VERY impressed with the menu options and with the wait staff. My son has Celiac Disease and is very sensitive to gluten and he absolutely LOVED the mac and cheese w/bacon added (for FREE!). That doesn't happen at most restaurants, and it was a big deal for him. We had two kids under 11 dining with us as well, and the waitress was super helpful when working with the menu. The kids cleaned their plates! The next time we are in Lawrence, we will be eating here again.
Went for Sunday brunch. I was seated in the area to the right when you walk in. A waitress came to me and asked if I’d like something to drink. I told her I’d like to wait a moment, that I was still waiting for my husband. She said okay, looked around and said (I believe she said Matthew) would be our server. After my husband arrived we sat there for 20 minutes watching this waitress help everyone surrounding us (some odd reason we were excluded from her area) Finally I asked her if our server could come and take our drink orders. By this time we had already helped ourselves to the buffet one at a time because we didn’t want to miss our server. He came over and apologized because he didn’t realize we were his table, which we couldn’t understand why we would be either considering she was all the tables around us server. He was very kind and apologized sincerely at least 4 times. We didn’t feel he was at fault. She saw that we had been sitting there the whole time.
We needed to grab a bite before a concert we were in town for (from Overland Park), and Merchant's seemed to have a lovely menu, so I booked us a reservation.
They have an extensive drink menu, so we had some time to review that, and also decided on our dinner choices while the server gave us time to look over the menus. We all had drinks (seemed like the Old Fashioned was a good choice for a couple of us, while I had wine), and also ordered a starter, dinners, and dessert.
All food was stellar, served in a timely fashion, and well-priced.
If I lived in Lawrence, I'd probably be eating a meal at Merchant's at least once a month. Cool place, looked like they had a lovely bar, too (which is where my husband and I usually sit when dining out alone), and seriously...no complaints. I really liked this place.
I was dubious about this as it used to be the Teller House and I loved that restaurant, but my worries were not founded. I had not been to Lawrence in 4 years, and the new restaurant - Merchants - is an amazing “farm to table” restaurant with great prices and amazing food. My beet salad was wonderful and a roasted chicken with butternut squash risotto was wonderful - chutney accompanied the dish as did sausage???? It was all wonderful. Helpful wait staff and great ambiance. Don’t miss this.
