Merchant’s is hands-down the best restaurant in Lawrence. The food is outstanding, the menu changes regularly with the seasons, and Chef TK Peterson and Sous Chef Nathan Desetti create the most marvelous creative dishes. The wait staff is tremendous - they stay with the restaurant so you have people dedicated to its success; friendly, courteous, attentive, and professional. The small wine list is good and the house wines are top notch. There are 30 craft beer taps featuring regional brews as well as brews from around the country. The noise level is such that you can actually carry on a conversation at your table. Merchant’s is the best!
Kimberly was an amazing server!
Fun it was so good. Going back for sure
Excellent Easter Sunday Brunch! Hot food was hot and cold was cold. This place does an incredible job on it vegetables. Yes I eat meat but the kale, brussel sprouts and carrots are fabulous. Smoked salmon with all the appropriate topping available. Good food and good coffee, usually hard to find together.
Food is novel, mostly tasty; but over-priced. 2 salads with protein added (1 vegetarian), 2 cocktails=$50+ before the tip. This is not sustainable for 2 friends who have white-collar jobs in Lawrence. I could justify this maybe every 2 months; unless I find someplace better that is a bit pricey and worth it.
It would be good to state clearly which cocktails are savory (not at all sweet) and vice-versa. It is a bit hard to tell from the menu. The vegetarian burger will be better if fully "cooked" through.
My husband and I came from KC while some friends drove in from Topeka. We always like to meet in Lawrence and explore dining spots. The Mercantile Pub and Plate did not disappoint. I'm sure we'll visit there again soon. Excellent menu and beer selections, and great, friendly service. Thanks !
The waitress was very knowledgeable about gluten-free versus Celiac requirements and made sure that my husband's plate that did not have to be Celiac friendly was prepared in the Celiac friendly part of the kitchen because his dish was naturally gluten free.
First time there, food was excellent and choices offered were unique.
Pickle martini is the best thing!!!!
Fantastic experience all around. Food was amazing, and the waiter was knowledgeable about wines.
The service was very slow, but the food was great.
This was a first time dining experience at Merchant's Pub & Plate. We booked at early reservation mid-week for a special occasion and found the restaurant had a busy bar for Happy Hour and moderately full dining area that was not too noisy. Our server was excellent, providing the daily specials, keeping tabs on drinks and carefully watching to see if we needed anything. The food was prepared perfectly and paired with interesting accompaniments that brought out the full flavor of the food. We shared a small plate of crab cakes which were very flavorful and garnished with pickled red onions and three aioli's. My wife ordered the pan-seared salmon served with black rice and a cucumber dressing. The salmon was perfectly cooked. I ordered the NY strip steak, with grilled asparagus and roasted potatoes. The steak was cooked to order and was hand cut. We shared the carrot cake for dessert, which is the best carrot cake we have had anywhere! The presentation and use of real raisins in an orange sauce put the dessert over the top.
Service was excellent. The food was hit or miss. The side salad was delicious, the Mac n cheese phenomenal. The crispy chicken lacked flavor and the breast portion was very dry. The burger was over done and again not a lot of flavor. I don’t see us returning.
I wished we lived closer to it because we’d go more often. It was delicious and our server was excellent. Highly recommend!
Food, overall waa great. Staff was very attentive and accomodating. Their brussels sprout sharing plate was phenomenal - makes sense that it won awards!
Really impressed by how much they strive to accommodate special diets and mobility (taking care to seat you where you're most comfortable).
The dining room was moderately noisy but, I think the very high ceilings helped to diffuse the noise so we didn't have to yell to carry a conversation.
The only issue we had was that our scallops were overcooked on one side and a bit undercooked on the other. But, management quickly apologized and took them off the bill. Everything else was very tasty - all the way to the coffee creme brulee. We'll definitely be back!
Completely disappointing. The pork chop was rubbery and tasteless. Service was impersonal and random. The bison burger that my friend had seemed to be barely ok. And the prices were OK; but too high given the lack of quality. The tomato basil soup was very good. I would absolutely avoid going back there and recommend that you find somewhere else to eat.
Great food and great value! Big beer selection. My husband was wowed by the meatloaf sandwich special.
Always a great experience. I really like this place. Dependable excellence!
The food was really good and so was our service for the most part. The only part that took away from the evening a bit was having a server who wanted to share too much of his own personal taste of wine, food, etc. When I asked about one particular bottle of wine I received a very lengthy explanation that was not necessary. But over all was a wonderful experience and we will return.
Very good food these days, creative cuisine but not overly extravagant. Reasonable prices and excellent serving staff. We were four ‘oldies’, worried about loudness, as we wanted to do a lot of talking and catching up. As the night went on, it got louder & louder, whereas earlier on, 7-8pm, it was more quiet. Still, we never got too uncomfortable in our conversation. Had a good time!
Enjoyed the casual, up-beat vibe. Service was attentive and friendly. We had several sharable plates and all were executed extremely well. Delicious and fun lunch!
Staff was very accommodating!
Merchant's is a terrific place to have a drink, some appetizers, and stick around for a fabulous dinner. The food is consistently both creative and great and seems to get better each time I eat there. Friendly and efficient wait staff, nice atmosphere, and wonderful food. What more could you ask for? Definitely one of Lawrence's best.
Fantastic Sunday brunch! My family from out of town loved it. This is the place I would bring anyone and everyone for an enjoyable and tasty brunch!
Always amazing food and drinks!
Our go place for monthly power meeting. Great staff, great food. Just great
Service was perfect. Food not so good. Short rib gnocchi - ick. Tons of fat not so much meat. Salad and buffalo meatballs good.
We had a great meal! And our server was a riot. Definitely will be heading back the next time I'm in Lawrence.
It is rare to see a restaurant offer steaks (or anything else) prepared sous vide. Imagine my delight! Everything was superb and the steak, of course, was melt-in-your mouth tender. The combination of good food and good friends will make this indelible visit.
Absolutely love this place, where the service matches the upscaleness of the food and venue.
The food was awesome! We had to wait too long for our table, but it was worth the wait!
I always prefer having a menu option when there is a brunch buffet, but the buffet was delicious.
Food and service were both top notch.
We loved the food and will return!
This was a birthday gathering and we were there for brunch. Unfortunately, everything was lukewarm; crab cakes were cold and overcooked. One of the group ordered a bloody mary and it wasn't tasty either. On the upside, the waiter was quite nice and brought some bread pudding with a candle in it to help celebrate our sister's birthday.
Merchant's was highly rated and my wife had dined here with family previously with great results. It seemed a fitting place for our 23rd anniversary but I was wrong. Made reservations and ensured they knew it was a special occasion. Showed up on time to be greeted by a hostess going the extra mile for a potential customer on the phone. The hostess never put the call on hold, or checked us in for our reservation, and after 10 min of standing there... waiting... a waitress attempted to seat us next to the noisy kitchen. The restaurant was approximately at 30% capacity on a Wednesday evening and they could have seated us anywhere. We requested better seating and they sat us next to a window near the front door (wife kept her coat on). The waitress was very pleasant and attentive and the crab cakes we're phenomenal. However, our scallops were undercooked, seasoned oddly and not seared well. The ambiance was nice but the wine was over priced and we regretted not having gone to the Basil Leaf on 6th instead, or just having stayed home to cook our own special meal. Not sure why the restaurant was so highly rated but it wasn't worth the 30 min drive and I would not recommend to friends, nor will I return any time soon!
The atmosphere was great, our waiter was wonderful, the food was very good and delivered in a timely manner!
My date and I were looking forward to enjoying Merchants Four Course 'Chef Table' Menu with wine pairings, and while the food was up to expectations, our somewhat inept waiter substantially diminished the experience.
In addition to several smaller blunders, the waiter served the wrong wines with one of the courses, ruining the wine and food pairing sequence, as we had to wait an inordinate amount of time before he could retrieve the correct wines from the bar. We finished the course before the appropriate wine choices showed up, then we were immediately served the next course. "Great, so where are the wine pairings for *this* course?" I queried. More waiting while our server consulted the bartenders to figure it out.
While Merchants did not appear to be unusually busy, the waiter generally made us feel rushed, grabbing our plates without warning in one instance, and before we had finished the desert course asked if we were ready for the check, without the offer of anything else such as coffee or tea. Coffee would have been nice, but rather than continue to suffer the poorly trained waiter I paid the $150 tab and we left in search of coffee and better service.
Love this place. Gorgeous and delicious with excellent top quality service!!
