Mendenhall Inn Ratings and Reviews
Every time my wife and I visit Longwood Gardens we stay at Mendenhall and usually dine there as well. The food is always wonderful and the bartender knows how to make a proper Long Island Tea.
When we go there for the Christmas at Longwood display, it is always on or near either my wife's Birthday or our Anniversary, which are only separated by 8 days. The Mendenhall Inn has a very nice way about it with a very friendly staff. On our most recent visit, Jessica, the hostess, seated us right by the fireplace. And our server, another sweetheart also named Jessica, was an absolute delight. My wife enjoyed the Striped Bass (Rockfish to us) with a generous glass of Merlot and I the single Crabcake (which was very large) with my usual L.I. tea. We shared the Brussel Sprouts and everything was quite delicious and very well prepared. We were treated as if the evening were the actual date of our Anniversary (which we explained it wasn't). It is a measure of just how nice an establishment can be when it is staffed by good, considerate people. We look forward to our next trip there this coming Spring.
We had a 12:15pm reservation booked through Open Table, we were promptly seated at our table and then waited 20 minutes without service before asking if someone could have our server come over. No one had taken our drink orders or anything at that point. Another server said they would send them over, yet another 20 minutes went by, and at 12:55pm we walked out, having had no food or even coffee orders taken. I understand they were busy but we told management on the way out that we had been waiting for 40 minutes AT OUR TABLE for our server who never arrived, and he just muttered "sorry" as we left. We will never go back here and would never recommend it to anyone after the ridiculous experience we had. We ended up having a very nice brunch at Longwood Gardens instead.
The day was great except for some food issues. The menu says crab piccata for an entree amd describes it as lump crab over rice. The dish that came had chicken with a small amount of crab and no rice. Wha???? Since I'm vegetarian i had to send it back. Either fix the menu or fix the dish! Also, some of the desserts on the buffet were still frozen inside. Minor, but we had to ask multiple times and wait to get refills of the complimentary champagne.
As usual, the Mendenhall Inn was excellent when my friend and I ate there last Friday. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for the season, and the renovations are very well done. Our server was a delight, and the food was awesome. The dining room was full even at lunch time, but it was still quiet and enjoyable. Every course was delicious, and the cocktails were too. Highly recommend the Mendenhall Inn for an occasion or just a weekday meal. You won't be disappointed.
The food, drinks and ambiance were excellent! Best of all was our server, Lou. He was professional and most pleasant. He created and served the Mendenhall Inn dessert coffee with style! The prime rib was perfect. Great dining experience for any occasion or date night.
Feels more like a banquet hall than a restaurant, and for the prices at dinner, I would have wanted the food to be higher quality. Service was incredibly slow, and the waiter touched glass rims and the eating end of cutlery brought to the table, not proper for any price range.
Delicious dinner with slow service despite a very slow night. First Tuesday after Thanksgiving but food delicious. Our server was training a newbee, however the server missed a few things, such as the potato that was part of his entree. The newbee seemed to be catching on well.
We went to the Mendenhall Inn for the first time for their Thanksgiving buffet. The buffet is held in a large hall in the rear of the property. The hall was very beautiful. The food selection and overall quality was quite good. The service at the food buffet area was also very good. The issue that we had is that the ambiance was quite awful. The lighting in the hall was extremely bright and unpleasant. All the lights were at full intensity and not at all comfortable. But even that wasn't enough to spoil the time we had there. What was very very unpleasant was the fact that at around 7 pm they started basically clearing all the tables around us and carting huge platters of uneaten food and dirty plates past our table. Yes I understand the need to keep the large hall clean. But they were closing up shop long before we were ready to leave and long before the place would formally close. It was really uncomfortable as the wait staff hovered around your table and they were clearing it up hastily before we had our coats on to leave. That was one of the more (most) uncomfortable evenings there we've ever had. What a shame for $108 !!
Totally disappointed for our Thanksgiving Day dinner. We ordered off the menu and the veal was bland and my filet mignonette was over cooked and tough. I would have sent it back but it took so minutes for our waiter to take our dinner order after our appetizer was delivered. Once our order wa finally taken it was another 40 minutes before it was served and it was not very warm. Two tables next to us were also complaining about the service and food quality. For a higher end restaurant the meal was terrible. Shame we ate in their bar a couple weeks early and the burgers were good. Maybe they should stick to bar food. I won’t be back and will inform my many foodie friends.
Arrived at bar 4pm. Immediate seating available. To few bar tenders. Dinner seating booked
For 6pm. Arrived at hostess desk at 6pm. Was seated right away. Order was taken promptly.
3 soups were on menu. Ran out of 2 best soups. Switch to Cesar salads. At this point everything
Went bad. Elaine and I ordered, Turkey dinner special. After an extreme wait, both dinners can
Out barely warm. Decided not to send dinners back. Food is never tasty when eaten warm.
I believe Mendenhall is more about making money. Then quality of the food served.
I was told they served 1,600 dinners. I don’t believe they have the kitchen size or help to turn
out 1,600 quality meals. We were offer extra desert to go. Because of time it took to receive
a below standard Thanksgiving dinner. Went back to restaurant bar for after dinner drink.
First cocktail sent back. Mix wrong. Second cocktail tasted fine. Word about hotel. Could not
Enter room 2 magnetic keys would not open room door. Maid open door. Told front desk.
After dinner, second set of keys open door on first try.
Overbooked and understaffed.
Very busy thanksgiving for restaurant! All of the wait staff were very nice n helpful, but u could tell they were being rushed. The wrong food was presented to me for my dinner. I ordered filet cooked medium, lobster tail n mushrooms on the side. I received well done steak, crab cake n no mushrooms. They did deliver lobster tail n mushroom to the table n compensated by leaving the crab cake on my plate. My husband's martini came with lipstick on the rim of the glass. They compensated by not charging for replacement drink. Overall experience was very nice, but u did have to be understanding!
We enjoyed the fabulous Sunday brunch to start off my mom’s 60th Birthday celebration. The food was delicious and our entire party enjoyed their selections. The service was spectacular, our waitress was attentive and patient. We are already planning our next visit!
My wife ordered shrimp cocktail, French onion soup without cheese and the surf and turf. Shrimp was good, soup was terrible and they forgot the entrée . I ordered Shrimp Le Jon , and a vegetarian entre' and a salad with raspberry vinaigrette. The shrimp Le Jon was not very hot or tasty the salad had the wrong dressing and the dinner was blah. The server had too many tables to work and all the manager wanted was to hurry us out so they could seat someone else. I pay with a cc but leave cash for a tip and was waiting to give it to our server but the manager said "I'll give it to her" again, just to hurry us out. He also spoke down to the servers, very unprofessional. We have been here several times before and our sons' wedding was here as well. Extremely disappointing, will never go back.
We have been there a couple times we always enjoy going food is always good service is great love the specials Friday nights enjoy the music. We have also stayed at the hotel found it very accommodating and nice we enjoyed our stay there such a nice place in the middle of nowhere it seems like it's great
First, I should say this restaurant has sentimental reasons for us to go as we had our wedding reception here many, years ago and had our son's rehearsal dinner here more recently. We just love the place.
We went this time to celebrate my dh's birthday, using the coupon that comes in the mail. We always enjoy this and it is becoming a yearly tradition. We both chose the duck with plum sauce as our main entree - excellent! We shared a dessert - a chocolate mousse that was very light and perfect after a filling meal. The waiter was excellent, attentive without being annoying so and was helpful in offering thoughts on the different offerings. An A+ evening.
A place that did many of the small things well. It was a quiet Wednesday night and our waiter, Mike did a great job of making us feel like we were in charge of the experience. He made great recommendations for drinks and helped us decide between several menu items. The food was very good and well proportioned. We left full. We even received a comp dessert for our 20th anniversary, which was a nice touch. We will be back.
I have held a soft spot for Mendenhall from the time my daughter’s wedding reception
was held there, some 25 yrs. ago. The restaurant exudes a warm, quiet, cozy atmosphere
that makes for a perfect oasis for fine dining and conversation. My only disappointment
was that you didn’t offer your fabulous Beef Wellington, but the saving grace was that
it was available if requested a day or two prior to your reservation date. Good-to-Know
for the future. You’re still tops on my list for a memorable evening out.
The brunch buffet was not as plentiful in good choices as we remembered. We also arrived on the later side of the brunch window and found that many items had not been replenished. The entree choices were fewer than we recalled and were quite petite in portion size. The setting was nice and has been renovated since our last visit. Overall, there are better choices within the local area.
On Saturday, November 4, I took my parents here as a thank you for helping us pack for our move. They had never eaten here besides the tasting for our wedding and our actual wedding. My dad enjoyed the Parmesan crusted striped sea bass, although he said it was a little bland. My husband and mom both feasted on the prime rib and took 1/4-1/2 of theirs home for another evening. I tried the seafood ragout over pasta and I'm so glad that I did. I had wanted to try it numerous times but never went with it. The flavors were delicious and I can't wait to enjoy it another night. Then, we were treated to a lava cake. The worst part about it was it was gone in less than 5 minutes. We were fighting over the last bite. I guess that really isn't a bad thing. ;)
First time ever that we could not eat our main entree's. My prime rib was a hunk of fat and I almost chocked trying to chew it. My wife's chicken dish was so bland that she had no appetite to finish once started. Flat bread was excellent and our waitress was clearly embarrassed by the quality of the entree's. The manager offered to pay for our drinks and desserts but in hind sight I wished he had taken the entree's off the bill and we would have paid for drinks. $90.00 bill for a terrible dinner. We did tip the waitress appropriately as she tried her best to please. This dinner was to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and the evening was ruined. On the way out we heard the manager also apologize to a couple leaving just ahead of us so something was going wrong in the kitchen that night.
