Melvyn's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We love Melvyn's and wanted our friends visiting from Houston to experience it as well. We were not told the restaurant was under renovation and we would be sitting in the patio area but it worked out just fine. Michael Healy entertained us royally and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Richard was our excellent waiter and he did a fabulous job. The house salad is always so delicious and fresh. My filet of sole melted in my mouth and was perfectly prepared. My husband had the lamb shank and he loved it. Our other guests each had a filet that they said was delicious. The Caymus wine was the perfect accompaniment to our dinners preceded by ice cold martinis to start. The carrot cake was divine and the cheesecake was fabulous. We had another wonderful evening at our favorite spot in the desert. Highly recommend. Cannot wait to seethe restaurant when the remodel is finished.
This is our second time dining at Melvyn's and they are just as amazing as we remembered from the first time. Even though they are undergoing a renovation, the staff is doing a fantastic job of working around their own back-area construction chaos and still maintaining their high standards of customer service. A sense of humor and their positive attitude makes up for anything that may seem out of the ordinary for a higher end restaurant. The food was fantastic, recommendations for wine spot-on and service impeccable. I highly recommend this historical gem as it has rapidly become our favorite foodie haunt when we come to Palm Springs.
Our first visit to Melvyn's was disappointing. Our second visit was VERY disappointing. There probably won't be a third visit. We had heard so much about Melvyn's. "It is an institution", our friends said. For our first visit we had a 7pm dinner reservation and arrived around 6:15 for a pre-dinner drink at the bar! Well, the bar was closed for a private function. We were rushed over to a table in the back corner and tried to make the best of our Happy Hour, but the staff seemed to rush us into ordering. That was in November of 2016. We decided to give it another try last month for my birthday. The website stated that the "Inn" was under renovation, but the restaurant remained open. We made the same 7pm reservation and arrived at 6pm for Happy Hour. We arrived to find a chain and padlock on the doors to the restaurant. A glassed in patio (extremely loud) had been turned into a makeshift bar and restaurant. We decided to stay and make the best of it, starting at a very small table near the door. After 10 minutes, we finally had to ask if someone would take our order, or if we needed to go to the bar ourselves. We watched as three other couples arrived expecting a nice dinner at Melvyn's as we had, only to be disappointedly shuffled into the patio area. Because of the noise, we asked to be moved to the back corner and once again had an early dinner. A member of the staff jokingly asked us if we needed earplugs! They seemed to be as surprised as we were about the restaurant being closed. I just don't think I could stomach a third disappointment, especially at some of the most expensive prices in Palm Springs. I do have to say that the food was very good and despite the bad service at the bar, our service at the table was very good.
I was very disappointed to find out that the restaurant was under renovation when we arrived. We ate in the revised patio dining area as the main dining area was closed. Moreover, I was disappointed that there was no table service. In the past I have enjoyed the Chateaubriand prepared table side. I wish someone had contacted me to inform me of the renovation. I have totally enjoyed my prior dining experiences at Melvyn's but tonight's experience was not good.
I'm sorry to say we were "under-whelmed." The food was just OK. The service was not great (lots of confusion, not particularly knowledgeable or attentive or friendly). And the prices are quite high, which lead me to expect a much better experience. I understand that the menu changed a few weeks ago and I hope that they're still ironing out the kinks, but I was quite disappointed by my experience there yesterday evening.
Oh, and the selection of wines by the glass was quite limited. I wish I could tell you about the rest of their wine list, but it was never offered, despite the fact that we asked about wine.
My wife and I were having a little tete-a-tete to celebrate our wedding anniversary. And we wanted to catch this restaurant while it still had the appearance and the ambiance of the 50s and 60s when all the big names dined there. It still had it for our visit. The food was amazing but the staff were beyond anything I have ever experienced-efficent, kind, humorous, knowledgable and treated everyone like they were a big name!! Anything that Id suggest? More vegetarian offerings and a table for two where I can look at my wife!! But really, 5 stars aren't enough.
I thought this restaurant was not as advertised. The food was not prepared tableside. It was prepared in the kitchen and then over cooked at the table so it was well done. The "captain " was surly and didn't listen to the order. We did not get all that we ordered. We were told they made bananas foster table side by the "captain " and then we it was ordered we were told they didn't have it tonight because they were renovating and redoing the menus. Then why advertise it and say it's available. Maybe it was just not available the one night we asked for it. Overall the feeling was the servers just didn't care and wished we would go. I usually tip 20% but the evening did not merit it. Save your time and money and go elsewhere. There are too many other places that want to earn your business. This place has had its time and should just close.
Melvyn's is a beautiful old-school dining experience and the staff could not be nicer or more professional. I would like to chastise some of the guests, though, who do not understand that there is an appropriate way to dress at upscale restaurants. It's shameful what some patrons wear that disrespect themselves, the location and other guests. Our whole dinner experience was wonderful until about 3/4 of the way in when a table of twenty-somethings (which is not my issue at all) sat down in front of us and one overly-dramatic woman was yakking non-stop at high volume. Fortunately we left not too longer after they arrived.
I hope that the new owners keep the charm and class of the place when they make needed renovations.
Stuck in time. Fun place to transport you back to another era. We would have enjoyed it more if our table was in the main dining area, but when we arrived for our 7:00 reservation, that dining room was filled, so we were seated in an adjacent room, divided by a wall and some Windows. Not one other table around us was taken, so it felt a little lonely, otherwise I would have given a 5 star for atmosphere.
Food was good, dated a bit , but we knew what to expect. Service was very nice and professional.
The bar is always a fun option.
Always yummy and fun! Two of us had the Cobb Salad and loved it! So delicious and fresh. The Eggs Benedict and Smoked Salmon and Bagel looked fab! So much to choose from. Another delightful weekend brunch at our favorite place for quiet, "getaway" dining. Great hand crafter cocktails and wine list as always. The service is always lovely and accommodating. A pleasure to be there and take in the atmosphere. ❤️
The food, atmosphere and wait staff were exceptional! Nothing negative to say. I recommend this place for anyone who desires a cozy environment, a fabulous meal cooked table side and live music! The staff went above and beyond to make my evening special. I visited from Virginia to eat at the restaurant Frank Sinatra loved.
Great old traditional restaurant tucked away in Palm Springs. Friendly, attentive service by expert staff. Tableside-prepared dishes -- wilted spinach salad and steak Diane -- were excellent. The beef ribs drew raves, and the lamb shank was delicious.. Very nice selection of three vegetables in a handsome presentation. After a superb dinner, we were overstuffed and split a single portion of the house French cheesecake for a perfect finish. I had never eaten dinner at Melvyn's, but I will go back soon. It's a pleasure to see classic dishes offered in an attractive setting.
We went to this restaurant based on a long review in the Los Angeles Times. Boy was it accurate. It has been there for ever along with the staff. Everything spotless. We ordered house specialties including Steak Diane and Cherries Jubilee, both cooked at the table. Watched other dishes also being cooked table side.
Service was excellent. Every dish was excellent and the prices were very reasonable considering. Dinners included either soup or salad and the salad was not just lettuce.
We also ordered the French Onion Soup and really, it was the best both of us ever had. Just perfect.
Even though it was over 100 outside, the temperature inside was very comfortable. Have been to a number of restaurants where the A/C did not work. This is not among them.
We will definitely go back.
Loved our Pond view, thank you Brian! Yummy lunch, the best chicken pot pie in the world! And fantastic Cobb Salad! Great Louis Jadot Puilly Fuissé (excellent wine list). Also, great Bloody Mary and killer good and always consistent, Bombay G&T. Always fun, especially with Manny, our waiter. You couldn't go to a more receptive and warmly welcoming place to drink or dine. Friends for life!
