I should’ve adhered to the negative reviews. We booked a reservation through OpenTable for tonight at 8pm to celebrate our 2nd year anniversary. On our reservation, we mentioned it was our 2 year anniversary and that we requested to be in the main dining area so that we could hear the live music. We showed up 10 min early and were not seated at our reservation time because a table was lingering too long in the main dining area. We were then placed in the garden patio area which is away from the live music and ineligible for the table-side menu offerings. The food took a long time to arrive. Additionally, it was not clear to us that the dishes included vegetables so we ordered sides, when in fact this was overkill. My order of garlic mashed potatoes had been forgotten, however they brought it later to us at no charge. The rib eye was delicious as well as the scallops. The shrimp cocktail was delicious and large but not worth $19. My old fashioned tasted like Coke with a splash of Makers Mark. The table next to us was there before us, ordered before us, but got their dishes after us, so they too had a poor experience. Last but not least, no one acknowledged our anniversary even though we specified that on OpenTable. I don’t think we will be returning to Melvyn’s. It was a disappointing experience for the standard of fine dining.

Such a lovely, old school dining spot in Palm Springs. Enjoyed a lovely dinner followed by drinks and music in the piano bar. Everyone from the Maitre D to the wait staff to the bus boys were the epitome of high class dining!

Food arrived cold. The waiter kept apologizing because he was so busy (3 tables were seated when we arrived; we were the fourth). The maître de had an arrogant attitude. All this for > $100 per person!

Bartender “Mike” is an outstanding service, he created new drinks for us. He’s super friendly, great energy and funny. We had a great time, will come back soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
My only disappointment was the escargot was not as mentioned on the menu, which we so enjoyed on our previous visit. Our waiter was absolutely wonderful.

I LOVE Melvyn's, it is a local institution. They seem to be remodeling the hotel areas and that will help I suppose. This was a Monday afternoon. In other words not busy. Plenty of staff. I feel we may have just gotten the waiter who has either been there too long or he did not want to be there that day. We did have an attentive bus person who watched out for what our waiter lacked. Not much attention from our waiter, not even in listening to our drink or food order.
I have had plenty of great meals here and as I say, I love that one can still dine here. The history and the way it is designed is all from a grander era and reminiscent of being at the Polo Lounge on a Palm Springs level. It would be nice if Melvyn's stepped it up a bit in service, all seem very comfortable, maybe too much? I did not complain at all, and I am not now. This is just a constructive view and nobody should be surprised if this isn't repeated when you dine. I am certain if I did make any noise, things so,under have been taken care of. I did not feel like being that person at this time.
I would recommend anyone else speaking up if your not pleased as they will be on it. My visit was a quiet birthday lunch and we had that. Everyone was friendly. Valet is sharp and watches trucks that passed by cars for renovation work.
Host is great, and all other waiters seems on their game. I won't give a negative because of one employee. Blasé would be my word for his work ethic at our table.
I still recommend Melvyn's and always have. It's a local treasure. It should not be a hit and miss place. Step back in time and enjoy, and if things are not right, just say so... I will on future visits. Good enough for Sinatra, that should say it all.

Not the best service this time around. I’ve been to Melvyn’s before and the service has always been good. This time it was quite poor, the waiter perhaps had more tables than he should have had, I don’t know. I just know the service was beyond poor and I felt bad because I had friends with me and it was their first time dining there. Hope it wasn’t their last.

Make sure you sit in the main dining room or the tableside offerings are not available to you. Wasn't real happy to find that out the hard way.

Not the same Melvyn's. Blamed slow service on a new computer. How often have you ever had to ask for a wine list? Or for your entrée?
Bar was a fiasco. Took almost 35 minutes for the first four cocktails in a party of six to be served. Another 20, yes twenty, minutes for the other two drinks- whisky on the rocks! Given wrong bill at end of evening- another 10 minutes waiting to get the right one.
New computer caused all this??

We made a reservation based on it’s reputation as a classic old Palm Springs dining establishment. Unfortunately, the tradition seems to have transformed into being a tired old restaurant. The food was average and the service, though apologetic, was slow.

The food was good, however, the service was extremely slow. The staff didn't seem to know how to work the equipment, example, took them part way through the meal to get the lemonade running. We had to track our waiter down -actually get up from the table to find him-so he could take our order and the bartender had to be really pushed to make a second drink! The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were tough. We might give them another chance, but not for awhile until they iron out all the kinks.

I have tried Melvyn"s a number of times since Mel died and was extremely disappointed and today was my last try. If this wasn't good then it would be another write-off for me. I was surprised at no parking attendant but what the Hell, it saved me $5 and I parked right at the door. There are compensations. Our waiter had been there for 45 years and was attentive and gracious. I was also pleased that that the "all you want" Champagne is still there, although the menu doesn't state that. Brunch today was as close to the old days as it can be. I was pleasantly surprised after reading all the negative reviews. Actually I have had several bad experiences there after Mel died. I have read in other reviews that the place is too expensive. I've paid far more in much lesser places and was quite pleased with the bill for a party of 4. Now Jennifer are you listening? Bring back the Monte Cristo Sandwich and you've got me for life! Bon Appetit people, go and enjoy the nostalgia of the real Palm Springs!!!!

Lovely evening of dining. The food was really good. My veal was too salty but the waiter quickly resolved that by having the chef re-make it. Loved it! The new restoration and renovation....beautiful. I’m so glad they kept the gorgeous chandelier in the dining room!

The old Melvyn's ambiance is gone so if you never went there before you might not have any reaction to the new look in the main dining room. While "we" thought the old Hollywood glam decor was fun, I'm sure there are people who will like the change. That's not the issue here.
We've had some amazing meals at Melvyn's over the years. Dinners have always been over the top. One of our favorite restaurants, especially for special occasions. Sunday Brunch this time - not so good. No one at our table liked their meal. The couple seated at the table next to us felt the same about their food. It was all edible and a nice presentation but the only items on the plate that were perfectly cooked ... the steamed carrots and green beans. Service was great as it always is. New owners, Plump Jack folks, have a great reputation so maybe last Sunday was just a transitional time in the kitchen? Definitely will try a dinner again sometime in the future but not going to rush back for Sunday Brunch.

We eat here once in a while, but something has change with food since Mel passed.
The steak I had was not as good of a piece of meat as I have had in the past, too much fat and gristle. My wife had the lobster pot pie (her favorite) and it was not as soupy and flavorful as in the past.
So something has changed in the food area, otherwise great place.

 (San Francisco)·Dined on October 27, 2017

The food at Melvyn’s was excellent, with a great selection of entrees, salads, soups, and desserts. The wine list was good, with some reasonably priced offerings. Suggest that the selection of crisp dry white wines be expanded to reflect choices from eastern France. The ambiance was good, and very conducive to easy table conversation. The service left much to be desired; our waiter made us feel rushed when we ordered our meals, very rushed as we ate our meals, and even more rushed when we tried to order dessert. We decided not get dessert because of this extremely rude and insensitive treatment. Needlessly to say, the management should have some words with their wait staff to remind them about the importance of being polite to and patient with their customers!!!!!!!!! This was a very unfortunate finish to an otherwise lovely dining experience! It will be a long while before I take any of my friends to Melvyn’s.

To the new Ownership of Plump Jack: We are fairly new to Palm Springs, but love our home, the area, the people and great dining - and that’s why we frequent Melvyn’s, particularly on the weekends for brunch. Melvyn’s was introduced to us by close Palm Spring friends, who have been coming to dine here for years. They know what good, consistent food is. We adore the original menu, the accommodating and friendly staff, and the great management chops of Brian and his team. We understand the change in ownership, and to expect changes with the interior and with the kitchen. I can live with the interior adjustments, but I cannot live with extreme kitchen and menu changes. I have to interject, that the service staff, were extremely loyal to the current menu choices, albeit with change. I had to push hard to understand what were the differences now, in the Melvyn’s Cobb Salad. Hard to imagine and hard to visualize to Loyalists like me. Needless to say, for both my husband and myself, the “new” Cobb Salad was definitely NOT up to Melvyn’s quality. I understand that the original chef is no longer there, but I am not here to criticize the new chef. But you must understand, that like in San Francisco, we do not tolerate well, menu content/presentation changes in upscale restaurants. We respectfully demand, that the original Melvyn’s Cobb Salad be returned to its original glory! I don’t want to see half grape tomatoes all over my plate, or iceberg lettuce replaced by Romaine in leafy chunks. I want the same perfectly chopped salad that brought me there in the first place and made me happy. I love Romaine, but not in this salad. PLEASE reinstate the original recipe! If you can continue with the same original Chicken Pot Pie, then you can revive and continue Melvyn’s Original Cobb Salad. There is a huge difference! And without the precise small chop, the current salad is a failure. Please respect the original menu. Thank you.

Melvyn's is iconic, and my wife and I made reservations well in advance for our honeymoon dinner. We noted this in our reservation request and hoped we would be placed in a secluded romantic spot, but that didn't happen. As luck would have it, the table across from us had a long and vocal disagreement with the management that dampened our experience. The food was ok, but the wine choices by the glass were very limited. If there was a valet parking attendant, he must have been on a smoke break and we had difficulty parking. Overall, it felt like a very private club where we were guests who were tolerated but not welcomed.

We love Melvyn's and wanted our friends visiting from Houston to experience it as well. We were not told the restaurant was under renovation and we would be sitting in the patio area but it worked out just fine. Michael Healy entertained us royally and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Richard was our excellent waiter and he did a fabulous job. The house salad is always so delicious and fresh. My filet of sole melted in my mouth and was perfectly prepared. My husband had the lamb shank and he loved it. Our other guests each had a filet that they said was delicious. The Caymus wine was the perfect accompaniment to our dinners preceded by ice cold martinis to start. The carrot cake was divine and the cheesecake was fabulous. We had another wonderful evening at our favorite spot in the desert. Highly recommend. Cannot wait to seethe restaurant when the remodel is finished.

This is our second time dining at Melvyn's and they are just as amazing as we remembered from the first time. Even though they are undergoing a renovation, the staff is doing a fantastic job of working around their own back-area construction chaos and still maintaining their high standards of customer service. A sense of humor and their positive attitude makes up for anything that may seem out of the ordinary for a higher end restaurant. The food was fantastic, recommendations for wine spot-on and service impeccable. I highly recommend this historical gem as it has rapidly become our favorite foodie haunt when we come to Palm Springs.

Our first visit to Melvyn's was disappointing. Our second visit was VERY disappointing. There probably won't be a third visit. We had heard so much about Melvyn's. "It is an institution", our friends said. For our first visit we had a 7pm dinner reservation and arrived around 6:15 for a pre-dinner drink at the bar! Well, the bar was closed for a private function. We were rushed over to a table in the back corner and tried to make the best of our Happy Hour, but the staff seemed to rush us into ordering. That was in November of 2016. We decided to give it another try last month for my birthday. The website stated that the "Inn" was under renovation, but the restaurant remained open. We made the same 7pm reservation and arrived at 6pm for Happy Hour. We arrived to find a chain and padlock on the doors to the restaurant. A glassed in patio (extremely loud) had been turned into a makeshift bar and restaurant. We decided to stay and make the best of it, starting at a very small table near the door. After 10 minutes, we finally had to ask if someone would take our order, or if we needed to go to the bar ourselves. We watched as three other couples arrived expecting a nice dinner at Melvyn's as we had, only to be disappointedly shuffled into the patio area. Because of the noise, we asked to be moved to the back corner and once again had an early dinner. A member of the staff jokingly asked us if we needed earplugs! They seemed to be as surprised as we were about the restaurant being closed. I just don't think I could stomach a third disappointment, especially at some of the most expensive prices in Palm Springs. I do have to say that the food was very good and despite the bad service at the bar, our service at the table was very good.

I was very disappointed to find out that the restaurant was under renovation when we arrived. We ate in the revised patio dining area as the main dining area was closed. Moreover, I was disappointed that there was no table service. In the past I have enjoyed the Chateaubriand prepared table side. I wish someone had contacted me to inform me of the renovation. I have totally enjoyed my prior dining experiences at Melvyn's but tonight's experience was not good.
