Melvyn's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The food was poor. Our reservation was for "standard" seating not "outdoor" but we were given outdoor and told there was no notation. Is this an Open Table issue? Not sure. But there is no tableside dining outdoors. Our food was horrible. Service was strange. A lot of servers but the service wasn't good and our waiter was concerned that he would get in trouble if he didn't take our order promptly. The bar was great. Don't bother with dinner.
For years i ate Melvyn's Cobb Salad, the best in the Coachella Valley. There is a new chef who has "upgraded" the Cobb from iceberg to romaine. Except in the process, the tiny chopped salad that gave a burst of all the components flavors has disappeared. It's now big pieces of Romaine and, despite the waiters comments, I believe a new salad dressing. Had it twice; I'll never order it again. The new chef has destroyed an iconic and famous dish in the name or "improvement". Please bring back the former, chopped, chopped salad. another guest had the patty melt - Blah . I love Melvyn's; have been going for years. But I don't like where it is going.
Always a wonderful pick, great service, from everyone. Very good food with lots to choose from. This is an old time restaurant with everything that went with it cozy, impecable service with waiters in tuxes . This is not a trending restaurant. We hope they never make it into the new cold sterile restaurants. They have valet parking and they need it very small area to park.
My wife & I hadn’t been here in over 20 years, we were happy to return. We chose to because of the new owners, having eaten at one of their other restaurants, where everything was first rate. Here that practice was carried on, great food, personalized service, all while having prices that were more than competitive.
We have recommended this restaurant to our friends and we’ll definitely return.
We were so disappointed as love Melvyn’s but the food was so below the standard it should have been. Service appalling and slow and towards end of evening waiters sitting in restaurant eating their dinner.
Next time we will eat at the bar. Such a shame and heard other customers expressing same sentiments when we left.
They would not seat us due to some glitch. Two guys in tuxedos simply told us we had no reservation and seemed uncaring as if we were not worthy of their time. My Open Table email confirmed my 8:15 pm reservation but the app itself had changed to 7:15 pm. The tux guys had no interest in helping. I know I had selected 8:15 pm so my wife could finish her nap. The best part was being charged $5 for valet parking.
Let’s hope the Plumpjack group transforms this into an actual restaurant.
Admittedly it’s hard to find Chef-driven, seasonal fare in Palm Springs but our dinner here was abysmal. Beyond overdressed salads and a chicken and lobster dish that was literally inedible.
Granted, it’s been around forever and has a storied past but good grief, the food is indicative of a restaurant kitchen with no leader. Just employees who’ve likely been there decades and are just going through the motions.
Went because the place was supposedly renovated. Saw no change. Same old waiters. Noisy. Service mediocre. My filet was dry as a bone. Caesar salad limp and over dressed. Food took forever to come. They did offer to pay for desserts, but no one wanted dessert. It’s a nice place for lunch, but there are so many nicer places for dinner.
The only reason there is even one star for this review, is due to the bartender —she was lovely and was handling lots of guests with professionalism and grace.
The food was really subpar —NY Steak —a piece of junk; garlic mashed potatoes, think they forgot the garlic and; the rest of the food was just mediocre. The service was just horrible for this level of place —thankfully there were back waiters who helped out —but looked around embarrassed —probably understanding that our waiter sucked. I expect more from a “higher end” restaurant—especially because you pay more —but I paid a lot for nothing.
One last issue —the bathroom had no toilet paper or seat liners —and it was very early in the evening! It is so inappropriate to ask for toilet paper as a guest!
I will never come back to this place again —not worth it.
I should’ve adhered to the negative reviews. We booked a reservation through OpenTable for tonight at 8pm to celebrate our 2nd year anniversary. On our reservation, we mentioned it was our 2 year anniversary and that we requested to be in the main dining area so that we could hear the live music. We showed up 10 min early and were not seated at our reservation time because a table was lingering too long in the main dining area. We were then placed in the garden patio area which is away from the live music and ineligible for the table-side menu offerings. The food took a long time to arrive. Additionally, it was not clear to us that the dishes included vegetables so we ordered sides, when in fact this was overkill. My order of garlic mashed potatoes had been forgotten, however they brought it later to us at no charge. The rib eye was delicious as well as the scallops. The shrimp cocktail was delicious and large but not worth $19. My old fashioned tasted like Coke with a splash of Makers Mark. The table next to us was there before us, ordered before us, but got their dishes after us, so they too had a poor experience. Last but not least, no one acknowledged our anniversary even though we specified that on OpenTable. I don’t think we will be returning to Melvyn’s. It was a disappointing experience for the standard of fine dining.
Melvin's is such an institution in Palm Springs. It has hosted some of the most famous historical Hollywood stars throughout it's history, and remains an iconic brand for the city. So I can't believe that the food is so so BAD!!! I can't imagine that the food was this BAD in the past. I've eaten dinner there 4 times in the last 2 years, and the food has been horrendous each time! This time was no exception. Seated in the patio, although requested inside, so not able to have tableside preparation for any of the signature items. So, no steak Diane, or au poivre . My choice in lieu of one of these items, was the saltiest and most overcooked sole picata ever! I would love to try it one more time, but I'm afraid it will be bad again!
I LOVE Melvyn's, it is a local institution. They seem to be remodeling the hotel areas and that will help I suppose. This was a Monday afternoon. In other words not busy. Plenty of staff. I feel we may have just gotten the waiter who has either been there too long or he did not want to be there that day. We did have an attentive bus person who watched out for what our waiter lacked. Not much attention from our waiter, not even in listening to our drink or food order.
I have had plenty of great meals here and as I say, I love that one can still dine here. The history and the way it is designed is all from a grander era and reminiscent of being at the Polo Lounge on a Palm Springs level. It would be nice if Melvyn's stepped it up a bit in service, all seem very comfortable, maybe too much? I did not complain at all, and I am not now. This is just a constructive view and nobody should be surprised if this isn't repeated when you dine. I am certain if I did make any noise, things so,under have been taken care of. I did not feel like being that person at this time.
I would recommend anyone else speaking up if your not pleased as they will be on it. My visit was a quiet birthday lunch and we had that. Everyone was friendly. Valet is sharp and watches trucks that passed by cars for renovation work.
Host is great, and all other waiters seems on their game. I won't give a negative because of one employee. Blasé would be my word for his work ethic at our table.
I still recommend Melvyn's and always have. It's a local treasure. It should not be a hit and miss place. Step back in time and enjoy, and if things are not right, just say so... I will on future visits. Good enough for Sinatra, that should say it all.
Not the best service this time around. I’ve been to Melvyn’s before and the service has always been good. This time it was quite poor, the waiter perhaps had more tables than he should have had, I don’t know. I just know the service was beyond poor and I felt bad because I had friends with me and it was their first time dining there. Hope it wasn’t their last.
Not the same Melvyn's. Blamed slow service on a new computer. How often have you ever had to ask for a wine list? Or for your entrée?
Bar was a fiasco. Took almost 35 minutes for the first four cocktails in a party of six to be served. Another 20, yes twenty, minutes for the other two drinks- whisky on the rocks! Given wrong bill at end of evening- another 10 minutes waiting to get the right one.
New computer caused all this??
The food was good, however, the service was extremely slow. The staff didn't seem to know how to work the equipment, example, took them part way through the meal to get the lemonade running. We had to track our waiter down -actually get up from the table to find him-so he could take our order and the bartender had to be really pushed to make a second drink! The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were tough. We might give them another chance, but not for awhile until they iron out all the kinks.
I have tried Melvyn"s a number of times since Mel died and was extremely disappointed and today was my last try. If this wasn't good then it would be another write-off for me. I was surprised at no parking attendant but what the Hell, it saved me $5 and I parked right at the door. There are compensations. Our waiter had been there for 45 years and was attentive and gracious. I was also pleased that that the "all you want" Champagne is still there, although the menu doesn't state that. Brunch today was as close to the old days as it can be. I was pleasantly surprised after reading all the negative reviews. Actually I have had several bad experiences there after Mel died. I have read in other reviews that the place is too expensive. I've paid far more in much lesser places and was quite pleased with the bill for a party of 4. Now Jennifer are you listening? Bring back the Monte Cristo Sandwich and you've got me for life! Bon Appetit people, go and enjoy the nostalgia of the real Palm Springs!!!!
Lovely evening of dining. The food was really good. My veal was too salty but the waiter quickly resolved that by having the chef re-make it. Loved it! The new restoration and renovation....beautiful. I’m so glad they kept the gorgeous chandelier in the dining room!
