What Insiders Are Saying
Melisse is the original Santa Monica fine diner, and it's still pretty wonderful.
We dined during the Road to Lyon night and I think the staff was overwhelmed by the full house. Our first course was served and we had to wait for 15-20 mins to get the wine pairing started since I think the waiter forgot about us. It got to the point that the second wait staff asked us if we were done with our first course and noticed that we didn't touch it yet since we were still waiting for the wine to come. Otherwise, everything was back to normal and the food was excellent. I have been coming to Melisse for years and sad to see that they will be closing soon.
Great evening with first class chefs and experience
I was wowed - from start to finish our experience was impeccable. Definitely, an experience to try at least once. The price was more than a typical restaurant but so was the service, food, wine, creativity. Well worth it. The food was excellent but the service is really what I noticed. Every single person was friendly, warm, and efficient. I look forward to my next dinner at Melisse!
Food was outstanding, we dine very often at Providence and had heard about Melisse so we tried the restaurant. Two completely different experiences. I think the prices are very high at Melisse
Unfortunately, the service doesn't match the quality of the food.
Food was cold, service was subpar, food wasn’t that tasty. Was better on prior visits last year, not sure what changed though it’s a lot worse and not worth the price point.
Came here to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We heard great things about this place for years and it is most famous for being a Michelin Star restaurant, which is hard to come by in LA. We each ordered from the 7-course fixed menu, which is very pricey. Knowing that the portion sizes were small, I was expecting to be blown away with the flavor and creativity. While there were some dishes that my wife and I enjoyed, there were a few that we didn’t, including our main dishes (the steak and partridge). As a tasting experience, we prefer The Bazaar. Much better food and variety for the money.
Our waiter was very friendly and made us feel very comfortable as soon as we arrived and introduced himself.
Big birthday!! Very well done by the staff!
Honestly, we were so disappointed. I had been wanting to dine here for years, so for our anniversary, we decided to check it out. We ordered everything on their 19th anniversary menu, including a $95 upcharge for truffle rissotto. Of the 5 courses, the rissotto was the only course,- besides the miniature (cold) hours de oeuvre and the bite sized crab with uni Panna that was actually great- served at an acceptable temperature. Everything else (the warm courses) were cold, lobster ravioli, COLD. quail stuffed with foie may have been good, but it was cold the entire way thru, gross. I almost spit out the one bite i took of my $275 entree. The steak my husband was served was not even close to warm, making it disgustingly tough for such an expensive slice of beef. Everything was played beautifully, no doubt, art. Yet, disappointing for $575 for what could have been such a delicious experience. The ideas here are great, it's clear Josiah has heart, however the execution ruined this message with COLD fine dining.
Melisse made a special occasion remarkable. I appreciated their willingness to accommodate my friend's needs. While the tables were a little big for private conversation, my family enjoyed the server's explanations of the dishes. The attention to detail and unique plating made this a singular event and a highlight of our weekend in the city.
Not impressed by the food. The service was outstanding, and the ambiance was wonderful.
My husband and I were taken on a culinary journey. Highlights were Partridge prepared two ways and the Lobster Bolognese.
The most amazing meal we’ve ever had. Perfect!!!!
This place is no longer surprising. Still good... but it's the same good every time.
I had been away from Melisse for some time and decided to introduce some friends to the restaurant.
I was not disappointed nor were they.
Everything about the evening was pitch perfect. The restaurant has improved over the years and is well worth a pilgrimage there for a sublime dining experience.
As expected, Melisse is a special experience. The flavors in each dish are so well crafted that there was no one outstanding dish. Each one was perfect in itself. Really a wonderful dining evening!
Did the 4 course tasting menu. It took 40 minutes between the 2nd and 3rd course. We saw our food being delivered to the wrong table and picked up and sent back to the kitchen. Our waiter offered no apology or explanation for the wait or ever even checked in on us. I remember the service being much better. Food was great though.
Elegant. Delicious. Inventive. True fine dining. Ideal for celebrations.
Amazing food and impeccable service makes this a bucket list must. Very pricey so for most it is for special occasions.
The best restaurant in Los Angeles area. The service and food is always excellent. And there is nothing to compare to the dining experience .
The food was EXCELLENT! I can’t decide what was our favorite out of the four course meal. But the corn soup was absolutely delicious. Service was impeccable.
Thank you for the very special birthday dinner! Amazing as always
Food was disappointing all around. Maybe my expectations were too high going in
Exceptional service, perfect food, gorgeous decor, top notch from beginning to end.
This was one of the best dining experiences in my life! The preparation was exquisite, the service amazing with the chef of each course delivering the food; amazing drink/wine menu. Would give this three Michelin stars instead of the two they have now. And we have dined all over the world in some of the best restaurants in Paris, London and New York. And I was a former executive in the luxury hotel industry and appreciate what it takes to deliver a meal of this quality and consistency.
Melisse would have received a much better rating from us but for the fact that our bill was padded without our knowledge. An already expensive restaurant, they included an additional 3% employee health care charge without notifying us. In addition, my husband ordered a risotto which was offered with or without black truffles. He didn’t request the truffles, but when his dish arrived, a server immediately began to shave them atop the rice, even as he was saying aloud “I didn’t order the truffles.” Truffles were listed at an additional $85 on the menu, but they apparently charged us a market price of $115 for them. It was only after I asked my husband what the meal cost, and he told me it was over $1000, that I went back to see exactly what we’d payed for. Just because someone is willing to splurge on a special occasion meal, doesn’t mean the restaurant should push their advantage with excess charges. We didn’t bicker over the bill, rather, it simply cast an unpleasant light on what would have otherwise been an extraordinary anniversary meal. I would suggest careful examination of this restaurant’s bill. Who knows what you may be paying for that wasn’t on your plate.
Upscale, fine dining experience. Perfect for an elegant night out
Way overpriced. Restaurants in Paris which are better cost less. Some of the food was wonderful, some just fine. Again, at this price point it needs to be better
My wife and I have dined here on numerous occasions and have enjoyed it each tome. There is no equal to this restaurant in the area. The tasting menus are exquisite. I recommend this place to anyone who appreciates great food and outstanding service.
Beautiful and exquisite food with a complexity of flavors. Service was impeccable. The wine pairing was unique and awesomely surprising. Yes it is expensive but it was an experience I will not forget; I hope to return soon.
Fantastic! Creative! The best restaurant in Los Angeles!
My family and I attended for their 19th anniversary meal, which consisted of six courses plus several small things, like bread and petit-fours. Everything was excellent and interesting, and the service was incredible.
there are lots of delicious menue. especially i enjoy the main course and they kindly explain what they served. actually i changed the coursd during the course but they accepted my request. the food is more delicious then 3stars and serve was woundeful too
in my 14 years of annual dining here, it never disappoints, always pleasantly surprises, and is a real special treat. Favorites include the caviar egg ..wow; foie gras in whatever form they prepare it; perfectly served seasonal fruits and vegetables. Service is as impeccable as the cuisine. Dining in its true form. Pleases the eye and mind with colorful gorgeous presentation of each and every morsel.
I love this restaurant. The food is amazing!!! It is worth it!
Really wonderful dining experience all the way around! Perfect for celebrating my husband’s birthday-he’s a foodie and this was one delicious plate after another.
Two of our friends had allergies to nuts. The staff never asked if we had any dietary restrictions. Bad!!
Their wine pairings are amazing! Some of them are not your traditional pairings but they brought out so much more flavor and taste! Highly recommend for special occasions.
