What Insiders Are Saying
Melisse is the original Santa Monica fine diner, and it's still pretty wonderful.
Wonderful meal with a good service experience! Will be back when it reopens. Thank you!!
One of a kind experience with exceptional service and great food.
A fantastic experience, the service and ambiance are top notch and the food here is spectacular!! Can't wait to see what they do with the remodel!
The creativity of the dishes Is unique and wonderful only to be surpassed by the flavor of all the food. Every time I visit I am always amazed and in love with the food.
We just had to go one more time before the restaurant closes for renovations. We have celebrated numerous special occasions at Melisse. The fix price menu of the chef’s signature dishes was wonderful. In whatever new direction they decide to take Melisse, I know we will return.
The food was delicious and the presentation was amazing. The service was superb. What an experience! I would've given Melisse a 5 star rating but I was a little disappointed when I noticed the chef stopped by each table to greet guests, but skipped our table. We are paying customers. The only reason I'd assume he skipped our table was because my friend was wearing a Hijab. Oh well - it was still a lovely night!
Great Valentine’s Day dinner! Only complaint would be prices are really high
Great ambiance and decoration. Food was great. Service was lacking, probably too busy a night; Saturday after Valentines with first seating at 5:30. Even though they had a champagne cart, server never asked if we cared for a glass of champagne. Champagne cart never arrived at our table, even though we were sitting right at the center of the main dining room. I requested a wine menu and the server forgot to bring it. Chef’s welcome oyster dish arrived without a hint of wine on the way, to the point that one of the servers asked us if we didn’t like oysters, to which we replied: “still waiting for the wine to arrive.” Evening improved as restaurant and service settled into the evening.
Eh. Not as good as I would have hoped.
Waiters looked very stressed and chaotic, bumping into each other and also not attentive to us. We waited 25 minutes for a basic appetizer and kept noticing how distracted the wait staff looked. One waiter got into a fight with a guest over a photograph he tried to take with his family (the restaurant oddly has a no flash photography policy - frankly it was not worth the resulting fight for the waiter to call out the guest given the loud fight and cursing that ensued. Later that same waiter tried to enlist us in his support by telling us how obnoxious the other guest was after he and his family left. Unprofessional and unnecessary.). Then when we were served a complementary dessert on a nice plate we remarked to him how nice the plate was and he answered - “Yeah it doesn’t matter if the food tastes like crap as long as the presentation is good.” We laughed but not because we found his comment funny - it was awkward.
There was no detail that was overlooked. Every item of food that we had was unbelievable. The uni panna cotta was crazy good along with the truffle risotto. Our waiter Ryan and his team amplified the whole dining experience. To be able to enjoy a dining experience that cost around $700 for two with one wine paring and still consider it a good deal says a lot!!!
My wife and I have eaten at Melisse numerous times and have had parties for 20 or more on three occasions and the staff and quality and presentation of the food always exceeds my expectation. Finest restaurant in Los Angeles!
Unbelievably delicious, sumptuous dining experience.
Very formal dining room belies the modern approach to food. Some of the best seafood courses I’ve enjoyed, ever, with precision-focused service. Really, really incredible food. Take the time to treat yourself to these thoughtful approaches to well-sourced plates.
Cheese course is NOT to be missed!!! Definitely worth the add on.
We were taken care of and looked after every step of the way. We had to be rolled out of the restaurant but it couldn’t have been more worth it.
We left with special copies of the menu from the night as mementos, which was so thoughtful and very telling of the pride the staff has in their restaurant.
Spectacular meal which was completed by the amazing staff.
Visit Melisse to celebrate my friend's birthday, and I had Dine LA Menu. The food was a very good value. I spent extra $50 for Truffle Risotto, and It was very worth it. Seafood was cooked very well and rich in flavor. Meet was cooked exactly as I asked for medium rare. Scotch was over priced, and it was not even that good.
The waiter was not so friendly, and did not explain the food very well. He made us feel very small and talked down to us.
They added 3% charge in the bill for health insurance benefits for their employees. You can ask to remove the charge, but I do not think the restaurant should be asking for something like that.
Overrated but still good. Several of the courses I didn't find them out of this world or surprising, not bad for any means but my expectations where higher. Overpriced to be honest. Service is impecable but unfortunately they make us wait 40 minutes for the main entrance due a confusion in our order. The chef was kind enough to come to the table an apologize and bring us a delicious lobster. I found out the ambience to be really quite and the music selection was completely off. The decor is kind of theatrical but outdated, so is way to stiff. The service is very choreographed but since this was a 7 courses dinner, by the 4 time of all this coordination and explanation started to be a bit too much.
Excellent service and wine service
The DineLA Menu was a great value and the Skate was lovely.
Great dining experience. Melisse is an ideal spot for a very special occasion.
Did not like the DJ
Fabulous food and wine, definitely recommend this place.
Great environment to celebrate New Years eves.
My favorite restaurant in LA area. Been there couple of times. White truffle risotto/ pasta is to die for.
I've been trying to hit the late Jonathan Gold's 101 best restaurants in Los Angeles. I've been to most of the fine-dining ones and so far, my favorite is Melisse. Jean-Francois has been extremely accommodating as the manager. Matt, the sommelier, has the perfect wine-pairing palette. I could not have been more satiated and happy.
went there to celebrate BD, staff very attentive & knowledgeable, every course was on point, always love their standard egg caviar, now sunchok ( potato &sunflower hash & black truffle) soup, truffle risotto are my new favorite, red velvet -red beet dessert, foie gras terrine, I can go on & on.. love the little change in the egg caviar served with brioche.. truely perfect meal.. usually 7 course tasty menu, you get couple misses, but not 12-26-2018. I didn't even make it to cheese course! It is that good!! miss the bacon bread, but glad you serve the bread after the soup.. Thank you for an unforgettable meal!
Not what I expected. The food was ok. Very disappointed in main course. But what I really didn’t like was the added 3% charge in the bill for health insurance benefits for their employees. I have bever ever heard or seen anything like this. You can ask to remove the charge, but only if you notice it. The restaurant like this should not be asking for something like that.
Melisse is an amazing dinner experience across the board. Our server extraordinaire, Douglas, was informative, professional, funny and a perfect addition to our celebration. The food was incomparable and presented with knowledge and pride. The restaurant is expensive but rather worth it.
Great evening with first class chefs and experience
We dined during the Road to Lyon night and I think the staff was overwhelmed by the full house. Our first course was served and we had to wait for 15-20 mins to get the wine pairing started since I think the waiter forgot about us. It got to the point that the second wait staff asked us if we were done with our first course and noticed that we didn't touch it yet since we were still waiting for the wine to come. Otherwise, everything was back to normal and the food was excellent. I have been coming to Melisse for years and sad to see that they will be closing soon.
I was wowed - from start to finish our experience was impeccable. Definitely, an experience to try at least once. The price was more than a typical restaurant but so was the service, food, wine, creativity. Well worth it. The food was excellent but the service is really what I noticed. Every single person was friendly, warm, and efficient. I look forward to my next dinner at Melisse!
Food was outstanding, we dine very often at Providence and had heard about Melisse so we tried the restaurant. Two completely different experiences. I think the prices are very high at Melisse
The wine pairing was seriously lacking. Too many champagnes/sparkling whites and no whites with one red
Unfortunately, the service doesn't match the quality of the food.
Food was cold, service was subpar, food wasn’t that tasty. Was better on prior visits last year, not sure what changed though it’s a lot worse and not worth the price point.
Came here to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We heard great things about this place for years and it is most famous for being a Michelin Star restaurant, which is hard to come by in LA. We each ordered from the 7-course fixed menu, which is very pricey. Knowing that the portion sizes were small, I was expecting to be blown away with the flavor and creativity. While there were some dishes that my wife and I enjoyed, there were a few that we didn’t, including our main dishes (the steak and partridge). As a tasting experience, we prefer The Bazaar. Much better food and variety for the money.
Our waiter was very friendly and made us feel very comfortable as soon as we arrived and introduced himself.
Big birthday!! Very well done by the staff!
Honestly, we were so disappointed. I had been wanting to dine here for years, so for our anniversary, we decided to check it out. We ordered everything on their 19th anniversary menu, including a $95 upcharge for truffle rissotto. Of the 5 courses, the rissotto was the only course,- besides the miniature (cold) hours de oeuvre and the bite sized crab with uni Panna that was actually great- served at an acceptable temperature. Everything else (the warm courses) were cold, lobster ravioli, COLD. quail stuffed with foie may have been good, but it was cold the entire way thru, gross. I almost spit out the one bite i took of my $275 entree. The steak my husband was served was not even close to warm, making it disgustingly tough for such an expensive slice of beef. Everything was played beautifully, no doubt, art. Yet, disappointing for $575 for what could have been such a delicious experience. The ideas here are great, it's clear Josiah has heart, however the execution ruined this message with COLD fine dining.
Melisse made a special occasion remarkable. I appreciated their willingness to accommodate my friend's needs. While the tables were a little big for private conversation, my family enjoyed the server's explanations of the dishes. The attention to detail and unique plating made this a singular event and a highlight of our weekend in the city.
