About Mela Tandoori Kitchen
The word "mela" means carnival or fair. When the mela comes to your village, it means an explosion of color, fun and good times (not to mention good eats)! Mela Tandoori Kitchen evokes the mela spirit with colorful striped walls, glittering candles and fragrant Indian dishes. This place is all about family: Mela's North Indian and Pakistani recipes come from three generations of Indian restauranteurs. Brothers Sohel, Zoaib and Moiz run the show now, but it was their father who opened Mela's original location as one of the cities first Indian restaurant in the early 80s.
Mela's food is family-oriented too. It can be ordered family-style to take in the full range of deliciousness on the menu, like the prawn biryani, creamy chicken tikka masala, and house specialty tandoori mixed grill. Save some room for the faluda dessert (an Indian-style ice cream sundae). Sounds like the carnival is in town, and it’s headed to your mouth!

Mela Tandoori Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
We thoroughly enjoyed both the attentive service and special dishes. We each ordered a dish outside our usual picks so were even more surprised at how delicious our selections were. We were seated at 6 when there were few present. But by 7 p.m. every table was taken!
Authentic, high value, courteous & efficient. Feels like home cooking. Clientele is a mix of South Asians & others. Young as well as old. I usually order Chicken Tiki Masala, Garlic Nan, a wonderfully aromatic rice & a glass of wine. The also have great beer. And I bring home enough leftovers to have a second meal. They have an upstairs club for late night. Thanks!
Ordered 2 mains.New hotel with ocean view as upgraded 👍😁xxxx
First was the Chicken Tikka Masala
with separate sauce.
It arrived yep with sauce on.
Told waiter order was wrong & it was brought back with seperate chicken this time but obviously just taken out of the sauce as still covered!!
Sauce was flavourless & runny as water.
Luckily the other dish which was Chicken Jalfreze was great.
We put all the chicken in the Jalfreze sauce & tucked in.
Was good now & ate the lot.
Not great restaurant but enjoyable enough for price.
Wouldn't rush back as lots of choice in San Fran
The food was very authentic. The spice level was similar to that I had in India. That being said the restaurant was unable to accomadate my friends who cannot eat much spicy food. They suffered through their meal. The waiter also did not write down our order and multiple things were forgotten.
Normally, we go for the paneer butter masala and baingan bharta at other restaurants. Without drifting too far from our norm, we ordered Mela's paneer tikka masala and baingan bhujia. Both were outstanding and I really appreciated finding whole, cooked spices in the spoonfuls of deliciousness. Naan serving was a bit smaller than we're used to elsewhere, but what they served was loaded with flavor. Will happily go there again next time I'm in the vicinity of the SF Civic Center.
Everything was so delicious! We were glad that we had made reservations. It was a busy place. The service was prompt which was important as we were going to the theatre after dinner. We did have to ask for our check a few times in order to get out on time. Would love to go back.
We were very pleased by our first visit to Mela Tandoori Kitchen. The food was quite good, with lots of interesting choices, and the restaurant is very modestly priced for San Francisco. The staff was very friendly. We were going to theatre and there was a bit of a crowd when we arrived. When we ordered, the server warned us that it might take some time, given the rush, but in fact the food came relatively quickly. The server even asked if we would mind things coming in other than the order we might have expected. We would go back.
Loved the food, but the service staff seemed over worked. Our group of four went before the theater and it was very busy. We had a reservation, but it still took several minutes utes to be acknowledged and then sat. It took about 15 minutes before anyone came back for our drink or food order. It was an hour from the time we sat until we received our food. We had to eat in five minutes to make our theater start time. I'd eat here again, but leave yourself plenty of time. Try the Indian wine too!
One of the top casual Indian restaurants I've been to in the Bay Area. Been three times and twice the food was fantastic - flavorful, unusual, worthy of going out. The middle time it was OK. Only downside to this place is the block - it's on a pretty bad block re homeless, etc.
I visit Mela about once a month. Its Civic Center location makes it attractive on nights I visit the symphony or the ballet. It has good, homey, unpretentious Indian food. I like their curries and their lamb dishes. Their rice is is nicely spiced and scented. Its staff are professional, young and fun. They are quick but do not rush their diners. Its prices are of great value particularly when I usually go out with a "doggie bag" filled with one or two more dinners. It used to be that I would just "drop in," but recently a reservation seems the way to go. Good for them!
Really great Indian food. We ate here while on vaccation and was Not disapointed after reading so many good reviews.
To start we had chicken samosas and vegetable pakoras which were very tasty and perfectly spiced. Mains were chicken jalfrezi and Korma with peshwari nann and rice. Portions were huge and the service was on fast and attentive, topped up our water glasses before they were empty and brough warm water to freshen up at the end, 5 star service for a great price. Fabulous find in the heart of San Francisco, so good we are returning here before we head back to the UK.
